Windows 11 gives you several ways to pin an application to the taskbar. The quickest option is usually Start > All apps, but you can also pin an app from Search, pin one that is already open, or install a website as an app and pin it.
These methods work on Windows 11 Home and Pro. The exact menu wording can vary slightly between Microsoft Store apps, classic desktop programs, and web apps.
Pin an app from the Start menu
This is the most dependable method for apps that appear in Windows 11’s application list.
- Select Start, or press the Windows key.
- Select All or All apps, depending on the Start-menu layout shown on your PC.
- Find the application.
- Right-click the app.
- Select Pin to taskbar.
On some Windows 11 installations, the command is inside another menu. If you do not see it, select More, then select Pin to taskbar.

The app’s icon should immediately appear on the taskbar. Its position depends on your existing taskbar pins and Windows 11’s taskbar alignment setting.
Pin an app from Windows Search
Search is useful when you know the app’s name but do not want to scroll through the Start menu.
- Select the Search box or Search icon on the taskbar. Your taskbar may display a full search box, a magnifying-glass button, or another Search layout.
- Type the application’s name.
- Right-click the correct app in the search results.
- Select Pin to taskbar.
Be careful to select the application result rather than a web result, document, or suggested search. If the option is missing, try opening the app first and use the running-app method below.
Pin an app that is already running
If the program is open, you can pin it directly from its taskbar icon.
- Open the application.
- Right-click its icon on the taskbar.
- Select Pin to taskbar.
Close the application to confirm that the pin worked. The icon remains on the taskbar after the app closes. A normal running-app icon disappears when the program closes; a pinned icon remains available for launching it again.
To remove the pin later, right-click the icon and select Unpin from taskbar.

Pin an app from Start’s Pinned section
An app does not have to be in the All apps list for you to pin it. If it is already visible in Start’s Pinned section:
- Open Start.
- Find the app in the Pinned section.
- Right-click the app.
- Select Pin to taskbar. If the command is not visible, select More first.
This creates a separate taskbar pin. Removing an app from the taskbar does not remove it from Start’s Pinned section.
Use the keyboard to pin an app
You can perform the Start-menu method without a mouse.
- Press the Windows key.
- Navigate to the app using the arrow keys or type its name to locate it.
- Press Shift+F10 to open the app’s context menu.
- Select Pin to taskbar. In some menus, choose More first.
On some keyboards, the Menu key performs the same function as Shift+F10.
Pin an app that does not appear in Start or Search
First try Windows’ special Apps folder. It lists installed applications, including some entries that are difficult to find through the normal Start interface.
- Press Windows+R.
- Enter
shell:AppsFolder. - Press Enter.
- Find the application.
- Right-click it and select Create shortcut.
- When Windows asks whether to put the shortcut on the desktop, select Yes.
However, a desktop shortcut is not always a valid taskbar-pinning target. If the new shortcut does not offer Pin to taskbar, put a shortcut to the program in the current user’s Start-menu Programs folder instead:

For a shortcut intended for every user on the computer, the corresponding folder is:
%ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsFor the most reliable result, the shortcut should point directly to the program’s executable file, normally an .exe. A shortcut that launches a script, another shortcut, or a document may not be recognized as a pinnable desktop application.
Pin a website to the taskbar as an app
You cannot reliably pin an ordinary .url internet shortcut to the Windows 11 taskbar. Instead, install the website as an app in Microsoft Edge, then pin the resulting app.

- Open the website in Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Apps.
- Select Install site as an app or Install app, depending on the Edge version and site.
- Complete the installation.
For supported websites, Edge may also show an App available icon in the address bar. Selecting that icon starts the same installation process.
Pin the installed website app
- Open Start or Search.
- Type the name you gave the website app.
- Right-click the result.
- Select Pin to taskbar.
This is a web app, not a native Windows executable. It opens in a dedicated Edge-backed window and depends on Microsoft Edge. If Edge is uninstalled, installed Edge site apps and other Edge-backed components stop working.

What you cannot pin directly
Individual files and folders
The Windows 11 taskbar is designed primarily for applications. You cannot generally pin an arbitrary Word document, image, folder, or other file as a standalone taskbar app.
To reach a frequently used file, pin the application that opens it. You may then find the file through that app’s taskbar Jump List, if the app supports one. A Jump List is different from a taskbar pin: it contains recent or frequently used files, folders, or websites associated with an application.
Desktop shortcuts by dragging
Dragging any desktop shortcut onto the taskbar is not a dependable Windows 11 procedure. Some shortcuts produce a prohibited cursor, while others lack a Pin to taskbar command because Windows does not identify them as application entries.
Use Start, Search, or the icon of an already running app first. For a classic program that is missing from those locations, place its .lnk shortcut in the Start-menu Programs folder described above.
Why “Pin to taskbar” is missing

On managed computers, the policy named User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar > Do not allow pinning programs to the Taskbar blocks users from pinning programs and changing the current pins. A separate policy named Do not allow pinning Store app to the Taskbar specifically affects Store apps.
Applications can also make themselves non-pinnable. Windows supports exclusion mechanisms such as the NoStartPage registry value and the System.AppUserModel.PreventPinning property. Setup, install, help, support, readme, and documentation entries may also be excluded automatically because they are not treated as normal launchable applications.

For administrators deploying taskbar pins
On organization-managed Windows 11 devices, administrators can define taskbar pins through policy configuration. Supported identifiers include an Application User Model ID, a desktop application ID, or a shortcut path to a desktop application.
The order of entries in the policy controls the order of the pins. If an application is not provisioned for the user, its configured icon does not appear. Microsoft documents XML-based taskbar configuration for this purpose.
The older PowerShell approach based on Import-StartLayout is no longer supported for provisioning the Windows 11 taskbar. Recent Windows 11 updates also support the PinGeneration attribute, which can let users unpin a policy-deployed app without having it automatically restored at the next policy refresh.
Methods that are outdated or unreliable
- Dragging any desktop shortcut to the taskbar: This is not reliable in Windows 11.
- Running a
taskbarpincommand: Windows does not provide a general-purpose Run or Command Prompt command for manually pinning arbitrary applications. - Using
Import-StartLayoutfor Windows 11 taskbar provisioning: Microsoft no longer supports this as the Windows 11 taskbar deployment method. - Adding a
.urlfile to taskbar XML: Microsoft does not support.urllinks in that configuration. Install the website as an Edge app instead.

The item may not be recognized as an application, the app may have opted out, or an administrator may have blocked taskbar pinning. Try opening the app and right-clicking its running taskbar icon.
Can I pin a folder or document directly to the taskbar?
Not normally. Windows 11 taskbar pins are intended for applications. Pin the application that opens the file or folder and use its Jump List when available.
How do I pin a website to the taskbar?
In Microsoft Edge, open the site, select Settings and more (…) > Apps > Install site as an app, complete the installation, then find the site app in Start or Search and choose Pin to taskbar.
Can I pin an app with a keyboard?
