Xbox One supports selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games. Xbox Series X|S supports selected Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Original Xbox games, with the exact selection maintained in Microsoft’s XBOX Backward Compatible Games catalog.
Use that catalog before buying an old disc or assuming a digital purchase will work. Microsoft also provides a separate SEE EXCLUDED GAMES list, which is useful when a title is missing from the playable catalog.
Xbox backward compatibility by console
| Console | Compatible game generations | Disc support |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One | Selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games | Compatible Xbox 360 and Original Xbox discs can be used |
| Xbox Series X | Selected Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Original Xbox games | Compatible physical Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Original Xbox discs can be used |
| Xbox Series S | Selected Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Original Xbox games | Digital only; it has no disc drive |
Backward compatibility is free. You still need to own the compatible game, either through the Microsoft/Xbox account signed in to the console or with a compatible physical disc.
Where to find the current backwards-compatible games list
Microsoft’s official catalog is the most reliable list because compatibility can depend on the specific game and edition. Open xbox.com/en-US/games/backward-compatibility and use the collection controls.

Filters for enhanced games and multiplayer
The catalog can also identify games with particular features. Available feature filters include:
| Filter | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| 4K | The title is associated with a supported 4K enhancement. |
| FPS Boost | XBOX Series X | The title supports FPS Boost on Series X. |
| FPS Boost | XBOX Series S | The title supports FPS Boost on Series S. |
| HDR | The title supports the listed HDR feature. |
| Online multiplayer | The catalog identifies online multiplayer support. |
| Local multiplayer | The game supports multiplayer on one console where the original title provides it. |
| Online co-op | The title is listed with online co-operative play. |
| Local co-op | The title is listed with local co-operative play. |
These filters describe individual titles; they do not mean that every backward-compatible game has every feature.
How to check whether a specific game works
- Open Microsoft’s backward-compatibility catalog.
- Use XBOX One games, XBOX 360 games, or Original XBOX games to narrow the generation.
- Search or browse for the exact title and check its catalog entry.
- Confirm whether the available version matches the copy you own. A compatible game may be available digitally, on disc, or both depending on the title.
- If the game is not in the playable catalog, open SEE EXCLUDED GAMES before assuming that it will work.
A game’s age or original platform is not enough to establish compatibility. An Xbox 360 disc that is absent from Microsoft’s catalog does not become playable simply because an Xbox One or Series X can read it.
Installing an owned digital game
Owned digital backward-compatible games associated with the signed-in Microsoft/Xbox account automatically appear in the console’s Ready to Install section. Select the game there to begin downloading it.
If a title is missing, check the account first. The purchase or entitlement must belong to the Microsoft account currently signed in. Also verify the game in Microsoft’s catalog rather than assuming that every item from an older Xbox library is supported.
Rank #2
- The biggest, most Dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the Dynamic and ever evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players
On Xbox Series S, this is the only ownership method available for older games. A physical copy does not create a digital entitlement, so an Xbox 360 or Original Xbox disc cannot be used to play that game on Series S.
Installing a compatible disc game
Xbox One and Xbox Series X can use compatible Xbox 360 and Original Xbox discs. The process works as follows:
- Insert the compatible disc into the console.
- The console begins downloading the game to its internal or expanded storage.
- After installation, leave the original disc in the drive whenever you play.
The disc is still the ownership check. Installing the game does not convert the physical copy into a digital license, and it does not remove the need for the disc.
Xbox Series S cannot perform this process because it has no disc drive. If you own only the physical version of a backward-compatible game, you need a console with a compatible drive, such as Xbox One or Series X.
What enhancements can backward-compatible games receive?
Backward compatibility is not the same thing as a remaster. Original Xbox games remain the original games, although Microsoft may apply technical improvements to selected titles.
Depending on the game and console, enhancements can include:

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
- Higher resolution, in selected cases up to 4K
- Auto HDR for supported SDR games
- FPS Boost
- Improved textures
- Steadier or higher frame rates
Enhancements are title-specific. A game listed as backward compatible is not automatically a 4K title, an HDR title, or an FPS Boost title. Use the catalog’s feature filters to check these claims individually.
Backward compatibility, Xbox One X Enhanced, and Smart Delivery
These labels describe different things:
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Backward compatible | An older Xbox game is supported on a newer Xbox console. |
| Xbox One X Enhanced | A selected Xbox One game has improvements such as higher resolution, faster frame rates, or improved textures on Xbox One X. |
| Smart Delivery | Where supported, Xbox provides the best available version for the Xbox console being used. |
Smart Delivery does not mean every Xbox One game is automatically optimized for Xbox Series X|S. It is separate from the backward-compatibility program.
Original Xbox limitations
Original Xbox games have several limitations that are easy to miss when checking an old game’s compatibility:
- The original Xbox Live online multiplayer service is not restored through backward compatibility.
- Original Xbox in-game marketplaces are unavailable.
- Offline multiplayer remains available only when the original game supported the relevant mode, such as local co-op, multiple controllers, or system link.
- Supported system-link games can connect Original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S consoles.
- Original Xbox games do not have Xbox achievements because achievements were not part of the Original Xbox platform.
- Original Xbox saves do not transfer to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
Saves created after running an Original Xbox game on Xbox One or Series X|S can transfer to another Xbox One or Series X|S through cloud storage. That is different from importing a save created on the original Xbox hardware.
Common mistakes when checking the list
“Every Xbox 360 game works on Xbox One.”
Only selected Xbox 360 games are supported. Check the Microsoft catalog and excluded-games list.
“Series S plays backward-compatible discs.”
It cannot. Series S is digital-only and has no disc drive.

- The Largest Collection of Classic SEGA Titles. Players will trip back in time with favorites including Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, Columns, Eco the Dolphin and four titles from the Phantasy Star series, to name a few.
- Several Unlockable Titles. Included in the collection are arcade favorites such as Congo Bongo, Altered Beast, Zaxxon and more.
- All Titles Upgraded to Hi-Def. The classic 2D style never looked so good! Each title has been converted to hi-def (720p) and will be a blast to play using the intuitive controls of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 systems.
- Massive Multiplayer Options. Friends can play the 2-Player classics together in select games from the same console at home.
“Installing a disc gives me a digital copy.”
It does not. The console downloads the game, but the original disc must remain inserted to launch it.
“Backward compatible means remastered.”
It does not. The game remains a compatibility version of the original, with enhancements varying by title.
“Original Xbox online multiplayer works again.”
The original Xbox Live multiplayer and in-game marketplace services are not available through backward compatibility. Supported local multiplayer and system link may still work.
“Every compatible game gets 4K or FPS Boost.”
Those are individual features. Check the specific catalog entry or use the 4K and FPS Boost filters. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.

Can Xbox Series S play Xbox 360 discs?
No. Series S has no disc drive and supports backward-compatible games digitally only. A physical disc does not create a digital license.
Do backward-compatible games include achievements?
Original Xbox games do not have Xbox achievements. The availability of achievements for other supported games depends on the original title and its Xbox release.
Can I use an original Xbox save on Xbox Series X or Series S?
Original Xbox saves do not transfer to Xbox One or Series X|S. Saves created after playing the game on Xbox One or Series X|S can transfer between those consoles through cloud storage.
The Bottom Line
The dependable backwards-compatible games list is Microsoft’s live catalog, not a generic list of every game released for Xbox 360 or Original Xbox. Check the exact title there, confirm the console and ownership format, and review the feature labels before buying.
Xbox One and Series X can use compatible discs; Series S requires a digital entitlement. Installation does not remove the disc requirement, and features such as 4K, HDR, and FPS Boost apply only to selected games.
