Windows 11 normally installs a camera driver automatically when it detects a built-in webcam or USB camera. If the camera is missing, shows an error, or stopped working after an update, you can install, update, redetect, or reinstall its driver using Windows tools.

Before changing drivers, check the camera’s physical privacy shutter or switch, reconnect an external webcam, and test it with Start > Camera. If the Camera app works, the driver is probably installed and the problem may be limited to an application’s settings or permissions.

Use Windows Update to install a camera driver

Windows Update is the safest first option because it obtains drivers intended for your version of Windows and hardware.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install any available updates, then restart the PC if Windows requests it.
  4. Test the camera by opening Start, typing Camera, and opening the Camera app.

If Windows does not offer a camera driver through the normal update list, check optional drivers:

  1. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options.
  2. Select Optional updates.
  3. Expand the driver updates section and select any camera-related update.
  4. Select Download & install, restart Windows, and test the camera again.

Optional updates are not installed automatically in every case, so this section is worth checking when the camera works intermittently or is missing from the Camera app.

Install or redetect the camera in Device Manager

Device Manager may list a camera under more than one category. Check Cameras, Imaging devices, and Sound, video and game controllers; do not assume the device must appear under Cameras.

  1. Select Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
  2. Expand the categories listed above.
  3. If you find the camera, right-click it and select Update driver.
  4. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  5. Restart the PC after the driver installation finishes.
  6. Open Start > Camera to test it.

If the camera is not listed, select Action > Scan for hardware changes. Windows will scan for newly connected hardware and may reinstall or redetect the camera. Restart the PC when the scan is complete.

Install a driver downloaded from the manufacturer

When Windows Update and automatic Device Manager search do not find a suitable driver, download one from the computer or camera manufacturer’s official support site. For an integrated webcam, use the laptop or PC manufacturer’s support page. For a USB webcam, use the camera manufacturer’s page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the driver for the exact model and Windows 11 system. Avoid third-party driver-download sites, which may provide an incorrect or unwanted package.

Manufacturer packages vary. Some are executable installers; others contain driver files that must be selected manually. If the package provides installation instructions, follow them. To install a supplied driver through Device Manager:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the camera under Cameras, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Select Update driver.
  4. Select Browse my computer for drivers.
  5. Browse to the folder containing the downloaded driver files.
  6. Complete the installation and restart Windows.

There is no universal camera-driver filename or command. Do not invent a PowerShell or Command Prompt command for a manufacturer package; the package’s own instructions determine how it is installed.

Reinstall a camera driver

Reinstalling is useful when the camera appears in Device Manager but has a corrupted or malfunctioning driver. You need administrator permission to remove a device driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Device Manager.
  2. Find the camera under the relevant hardware category.
  3. Right-click it and select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab and select Uninstall Device.
  5. If shown, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device, then select OK.
  6. In Device Manager, select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
  7. Allow Windows to detect and reinstall the camera.
  8. Restart the PC and test the Camera app.

If Windows does not reinstall the device, repeat the scan while the external webcam is connected directly to the PC. You can also return to Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates and check for a driver there.

Use the built-in USB Video Device driver

Most USB webcams support USB Video Class (UVC). If a compatible external webcam is malfunctioning with its current driver, you can try Windows’ built-in driver named USB Video Device.

  4. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  5. Select USB Video Device.
  6. Select Next, then Close.
  7. Restart Windows and test the webcam.

Administrator permission is required. This driver can restore basic video operation, but it may not support manufacturer-specific features. For example, Windows Hello facial recognition can stop working if it depends on extensions in the original manufacturer driver. If that happens, reinstall the manufacturer’s driver.

Enable a disabled camera

A camera that is disabled does not need a new driver. In Device Manager, expand Cameras, right-click the camera, and look at the menu:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If the menu says Enable device, select it.
  • If the menu says Disable device, the camera is already enabled.

After enabling it, restart the application that needs the camera and test it with Start > Camera.

Fix camera permissions after installing the driver

A correctly installed driver can still appear broken if Windows is blocking access.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
  2. Turn on Camera access.
  3. Turn on Let apps access your camera.
  4. Turn on Let desktop apps access your camera for browsers, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and other traditional desktop programs.

Microsoft Store apps can appear individually in the app-access list. Traditional desktop applications are controlled by the desktop-app setting rather than by separate switches for each program. If Camera access is disabled and greyed out, an administrator or organization policy may be controlling it.

Where is the camera listed in Device Manager?

Check Cameras, Imaging devices, and Sound, video and game controllers. The category depends on the camera hardware and driver.

Do I need a command to install a camera driver?

No. Microsoft’s standard Windows 11 procedures use Windows Update and Device Manager. Manufacturer driver packages may have their own installer, but there is no universal command or filename.

Should every USB webcam use USB Video Device?

No. The built-in driver is a troubleshooting option for a compatible UVC webcam that is malfunctioning. It may remove manufacturer-specific features, including some Windows Hello facial-recognition support.

Why is the camera still not working after reinstalling the driver?

The cause may be camera permissions, a physical shutter or switch, another application using the camera, antivirus software, organization policy, incorrect app settings, poor lighting, or faulty hardware rather than the driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with Windows Update, including Optional updates, then check Device Manager and camera privacy settings. If the camera is listed but fails, update, reinstall, or roll back its driver. For a malfunctioning compatible USB webcam, USB Video Device can be a useful fallback, but use the manufacturer driver when you need its extra features.
