OpenAI handles files differently depending on where they were uploaded: a file saved in Library can remain available until you delete it, while files from Temporary Chats, unsupported upload flows, Projects, custom GPTs, or certain enterprise workflows follow different retention rules.
The quickest fix is to open Library from ChatGPT’s left sidebar and look for the file there. If it is present, use the composer’s attachment button and choose Add from library. If it is not present, the original upload may have been temporary, removed by a retention policy, deleted, or affected by a workspace-specific rule.
What “file expired” means in ChatGPT
The message usually means ChatGPT can no longer retrieve the particular file reference attached to that conversation. It does not necessarily mean that OpenAI has a universal expiration timer for all uploads.
There are several separate storage paths:

OpenAI’s file and chat retention documentation specifically distinguishes persistent Library files from unsupported or transient uploads. For Enterprise users, files not saved to Library expire after 48 hours unless another retention period applies.

First, check whether the file is still in Library
Library is the best place to determine whether the file itself still exists. It is available on the web for ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare accounts, although workspace policies and feature availability can affect what you see.
- Open ChatGPT in a web browser.
- Click Library in the left-hand sidebar.
- Search for the filename, or filter by Uploaded.
- Choose a type filter such as Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, PDFs, or Images.
- Open the file to confirm that it is the same document you used in the expired conversation.
If the file appears in Library, it has not necessarily expired. The old chat may simply contain an unusable or temporary file reference. Start a new chat, click the attachment/add button in the composer, select Add from library, and choose the file.
Why deleting a chat may not solve the problem
Chat history and Library storage are managed separately. Deleting the conversation that originally contained an upload does not delete the Library copy. Conversely, deleting a chat will not restore a file that was only available through a temporary or transient upload.
This is why two apparently contradictory situations can occur:

- A deleted conversation’s file remains available in Library.
- An old conversation still exists, but its attached file produces an expired-file error.
In the second case, keep the chat if you need its text, but upload or attach the document again from Library—or upload a fresh copy.
Check whether you used Temporary Chat
Temporary Chats are designed not to remain in normal chat history. Files uploaded there are not saved to your account or Library. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes, but that does not make the file available for reuse in a normal chat.
You can identify the workflow by the Temporary pill-shaped button in the top-right corner of the page. To start one, open a new chat and click Temporary. If the expired upload came from that type of chat, the practical solution is to upload the original file again in a regular chat or save a durable copy in an appropriate Project or Library workflow.
Check Projects and custom GPTs separately
Projects
A Project has its own files and conversation context. To create one, click New project in the sidebar, then choose its name, icon, and color. Files added to a Project can be opened from the Project’s sources list to preview, download, or delete them.

If you can access the Project but a conversation says the file is expired:
- Open the relevant Project.
- Open its sources or files list.
- Confirm that the document is still listed.
- Open or download it if available.
- Return to a Project conversation and attach or reference the current Project file.
Deleting a file from a shared Project removes it for everyone in that Project. Project limits also vary by plan: Free allows 5 files per Project, Go and Plus allow 25, and Edu, Pro, Business, and Enterprise allow 40. Only 10 files can be uploaded at once.
Custom GPTs
Files added as knowledge to a custom GPT remain until the custom GPT is deleted. If the GPT was deleted, its associated files are removed within 30 days, subject to security and legal-retention exceptions. Recreating a GPT does not automatically restore its old knowledge files; you will need to add the source documents again.
Inspect Library storage
A full account can cause new uploads to fail or behave differently from expected. In ChatGPT, open Library, then select Storage. This view shows total usage, remaining storage, and whether the account is over its limit.

Delete unnecessary files from Library if storage is full. Select a file and click Delete or the trash icon. Deleted files may appear under Recently deleted, where the available controls include Delete forever and Delete all.
Permanent deletion from OpenAI systems is scheduled within 30 days, although de-identification and security or legal-retention exceptions can apply. That 30-day period describes deletion processing; it is not a general expiration period for all ChatGPT files.
Upload a replacement if the file is genuinely gone
If Library, the Project sources list, and the custom GPT configuration do not contain the document, locate the original on your computer or cloud storage and upload it again. For a reliable replacement:
- Use a normal, non-Temporary chat unless you specifically want temporary handling.
- Attach the file with the composer’s add button.
- Wait for the upload to finish before asking ChatGPT to analyze it.
- For a reusable document, verify that it appears in Library or add it to the intended Project.
- Keep the original file outside ChatGPT as a backup.
Current limits include 512 MB for a file uploaded to a GPT or ChatGPT conversation, 2 million tokens for text and document files, approximately 50 MB for CSVs and spreadsheets depending on row size, and 20 MB per image. A file that exceeds its applicable limit may fail during upload rather than produce a normal reusable Library item.

What does not fix an expired file
- Turning off model training: data-control settings about training use are separate from file persistence. They do not determine whether a file is retained.
- Deleting and reopening the chat: this cannot restore a transient upload that has already expired.
- Waiting for the timer to reset: there is no documented universal three-hour or 24-hour expiration rule for all ChatGPT uploads.
- Using a command: ChatGPT’s documented file controls are interface options such as Library, Add from library, Storage, Delete, Recently deleted, and Temporary. There is no command syntax that renews an expired upload.
A practical recovery checklist
- Open Library from the sidebar.
- Search by filename and filter to Uploaded and the relevant file type.
- If found, attach it through Add from library in a new chat.
- If not found, check the Project’s sources list or the custom GPT’s knowledge files.
- Confirm that the original conversation was not a Temporary Chat.
- Open Library’s Storage page and check the account limit.
- Look in Recently deleted if you removed the file.
- If no copy exists, upload the original again in a regular chat and save it in the appropriate persistent location.
FAQ
Do all ChatGPT files expire after 24 hours?
No. OpenAI’s current documentation does not define a universal 24-hour expiration rule. Library files can remain until manually deleted, while Temporary Chat, unsupported, transient, Project, custom GPT, and workspace-managed files follow different rules.
Can I recover a file after deleting the chat?
Possibly. If the upload was saved to Library, deleting the chat does not delete the Library copy. Open Library and search for the file. A file that existed only in a Temporary Chat or transient upload may not be recoverable from ChatGPT.
How do I reuse a file that is still in Library?
In a new chat, click the attachment/add button in the composer, choose Add from library, and select the document.
How long do deleted Library files remain?
Deleted files are scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days, subject to de-identification and security or legal-retention exceptions. They may first appear in Recently deleted.

Why did a file in an Enterprise workspace expire?

“File expired” is a storage-path problem, not proof of a universal ChatGPT file timer. Check Library first, then the relevant Project or custom GPT. If the file was uploaded in Temporary Chat, was removed, or was governed by a workspace or transient-upload policy, upload a fresh copy. For files you will reuse, attach them through Add from library or keep them in the appropriate Project rather than relying on an old chat attachment.
