Supported video attachments may show a preview in the chat. A recipient may not see the preview if they lack access to the file or if certain sensitivity labels protect it.
Where chat videos are stored
A video sent in a one-to-one or group chat is stored in the sender’s OneDrive for Business and shared with the people in that conversation. It is not stored in the team’s SharePoint document library just because it was sent in a chat.
Share an existing video in a Teams channel
Use a channel when the video belongs with a project, department, or team.
- Open Chat, then select Channels.
- Choose the team and channel, then open the relevant post or conversation.
- Select Reply if you are adding the video to an existing conversation.
- Select Actions and apps, then Attach file.
- Choose the video from recent files, cloud files, or your device, depending on the options shown.
- Add an optional message and select Send.
Supported video attachments may be previewed in the channel. A preview may not appear for people who lack access or when certain sensitivity labels protect the file. Files uploaded to a channel are stored in the team’s SharePoint folder; access depends on the channel’s permissions.

Record and send a short video clip
For a quick explanation, you can record a clip directly in a one-to-one chat, group chat, or channel discussion instead of attaching an existing video.
- Open the chat or channel discussion.
- Select Actions and apps, then Record a video clip.
- Start recording. You can pause and continue, then trim the clip before sending.
- Review the clip and select Send.
Microsoft Support says Teams clips can be up to one minute (publication year not listed). Shared clips have auto-generated captions that viewers can toggle.
Share a video already in OneDrive or SharePoint
Sharing a link avoids uploading another copy and lets you manage access to the original file.
- In Teams, open OneDrive from the left navigation.
- Select My files.
- Find the video and select More actions, or hover over it and select Share.
- Choose Share to send it directly, or Copy link to paste it into a Teams chat or channel post.
- If sharing directly, enter a person, group, or email address.
- Review the audience and permission settings. Options may include Can view, Can edit, Can review, or Can’t download, depending on the file and your organization’s settings.
- Apply any permission changes, add an optional message, and send the link.
For a video recipients only need to watch, choose Can view where available. Do not assume every link or permission option is available: organization and file settings can affect the choices shown. Confirm the intended people can access the file before sending.

Share a video with someone outside your organization
- Open the video’s sharing dialog and select Link settings.
- Choose People you choose, then select Apply.
- Enter the external person’s email address and set the least-permissive access that will work, normally Can view.
- Send the invitation or copy the generated link.
Your organization may block external sharing or restrict link forwarding and permission choices. If the recipient cannot open the video, an administrator may need to review the Microsoft 365 or SharePoint sharing policy.
Share one video to several Teams channels
Post a link rather than uploading separate copies when you want to refer to the same video in multiple channels.
- Open OneDrive in Teams and select My files.
- Find the video and choose Share or Copy link.
- Set access for the intended viewers, then apply the setting.
- Paste the link into each channel post and add context for viewers.
A link points people to one source file, reducing the risk that different channels end up with different versions after edits.
Share a video from the Teams mobile app
On mobile, attach a stored video from the target conversation using its attach control. The exact labels can vary by app version and rollout; sharing a screen or live camera video is not the same as attaching a stored video file.

Share a video during a Teams meeting
To play a video for attendees, share the window or screen where it is playing and enable Share audio so they can hear its sound.
- Start or join the meeting and open the meeting controls.
- Select Share and choose the window or screen playing the video.
- Turn on Share audio.
- Start or resume the video playback and check that attendees can hear it.
Sharing a video file in the meeting chat is a separate action. If attendees need the video afterward, share the file or its OneDrive link in the chat.
Share your screen in a chat
Screen sharing from a chat is different from sending a video file. From the chat’s more-options menu, choose Screen sharing and select a screen or window. Other participants receive a notification and must accept. Microsoft says this starts a muted call; unmute or turn on your camera to make it an instant meeting. Linux users cannot share screens in a Teams chat, according to Microsoft Support.
Find a video after sharing it
In a chat
- Open the chat.
- Select Shared or, in some interfaces, Files.
- Use the available files or links views to find the video.
In a channel
- Open the channel and select Shared.
- Look in the post or file views, or open the channel’s SharePoint library.
Common video-sharing problems
| Problem | What to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Recipients cannot open the video | They may lack file access, or access may be restricted by the team, site, group, or organization. | Review the file’s sharing settings or Manage access and confirm the intended audience is included. |
| A video preview does not appear | The recipient may lack access, or a sensitivity label may prevent preview. | Check access and have the recipient open the file through its link if permitted. |
| Sharing choices are missing or unavailable | Your organization may restrict external sharing, forwarding, or permission levels. | Contact your Microsoft 365 administrator. |
| Recipients can edit a video that should be view-only | The link may grant edit access. | Change the permission to Can view where available, then share the updated link. |
Which video-sharing method should you use?
| Goal | Best option | Recipient experience and access |
|---|---|---|
| Send an existing video for later | Attach it in a chat or channel | Recipients open the shared file; access and preview depend on permissions. |
| Share a cloud-hosted video | Send a OneDrive link | Recipients use the original file under its sharing permissions. |
| Give a quick explanation | Record a Teams video clip | A short clip in the conversation; Microsoft documents a limit of up to one minute. |
| Play a video live in a meeting | Share its window or screen and enable Share audio | Attendees watch live and hear the shared device audio. |
