Amazon Fire tablets generally do not show Android’s usual launcher selector at Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app. That menu is documented for some Android phones, but it is not the normal path on Fire OS.
You can still use another home-screen launcher without rooting the tablet. The practical options are Fire Toolbox on Windows, manual ADB commands, or a launcher-helper app that redirects the Home action. Fire Toolbox is the most approachable option; ADB gives you more control but is dependent on the Fire OS build and the correct Amazon package name.
Before you begin
Check the Fire OS version first. Open Settings > Device Options > System Updates. The Fire OS version is shown on that page.
The procedure below applies to current Fire OS 7 and Fire OS 8 methods reported for Fire tablets, but Amazon can change launcher behavior in an update. In particular, disabling the Amazon launcher does not work on every build.

| Method | What you need | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire Toolbox | Windows PC, data-capable USB cable, Fire tablet | Most users | Windows only; available options vary by Toolbox version |
| ADB | Computer with ADB, USB cable, developer settings | Users comfortable with commands | The package name and disable command may vary by Fire OS build |
| Launcher helper | Helper app and replacement launcher | Quick experiments without a computer | Home redirection may stop after a reboot or Fire OS update |
Important: install and open the replacement launcher before disabling Amazon’s launcher. If Amazon’s launcher is the only working home-screen application and you disable it first, the Home action can lead to a blank or difficult-to-use screen.
Option 1: Use Fire Toolbox on Windows
Fire Toolbox is a Windows utility distributed through its official XDA Developers thread. It requires a Fire tablet, a Windows computer, and a USB cable that supports data transfer—not merely charging.
- Install the launcher you want on the Fire tablet. You can install it from an available app store or sideload its APK.
- Open the launcher once on the tablet so it completes its initial setup.
- Enable developer settings. Go to Settings > Device Options > About Fire Tablet > Serial Number, then tap Serial Number repeatedly. Seven taps is the commonly reported count.
- Return to Settings > Device Options > Developer Options.
- Enable ADB Debugging. On some Fire OS builds the same setting is labeled USB Debugging.
- Connect the tablet to the Windows PC with the USB cable.
- Unlock the tablet and accept the USB-debugging authorization prompt. If available, select Always allow from this computer, then tap Allow.
- Start Fire Toolbox and open Custom Launcher.
- Select the installed launcher, or use the installation option if your Toolbox version provides one, and follow the on-screen instructions.
Fire Toolbox versions do not all expose exactly the same choices. If the tablet is not detected, see the troubleshooting section below before changing launcher settings manually.
Option 2: Install a launcher and control it with ADB
1. Allow the APK to be installed
If the launcher is not available through the tablet’s normal app-distribution options, you may need to sideload its APK. The wording differs by Fire OS version:

- Open Settings > Security & Privacy.
- Open Apps from Unknown Sources or Install unknown apps.
- Select the app that will open the APK, such as Silk Browser or Files.
- Enable permission to install unknown apps.
- Install the launcher APK and open the launcher once.
Only install APKs from a source you trust. An APK installer permission applies to the selected app, so avoid granting it more broadly than necessary.
2. Turn on ADB debugging
- Open Settings > Device Options > About Fire Tablet > Serial Number.
- Tap Serial Number repeatedly until Fire OS reports that developer options are enabled.
- Go to Settings > Device Options > Developer Options.
- Enable ADB Debugging or USB Debugging, depending on the label on your tablet.
- Connect the tablet to the computer and approve the USB-debugging prompt on the tablet.
3. Find the Amazon launcher package
Do not assume that every Fire tablet uses the same package name. The commonly reported package is com.amazon.firelauncher, but package names can vary by model or Fire OS version.
From a Windows Command Prompt, run:
adb shell pm list packages | findstr launcher
On macOS or Linux, run:
./adb shell pm list packages | grep launcher
Look for the package that represents Amazon’s home-screen launcher. If ADB is not recognized, install or use the Android platform-tools package and run the command from the folder containing adb.
4. Disable the Amazon launcher
If the package is com.amazon.firelauncher, the commonly reported command is:

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.amazon.firelauncher
On macOS or Linux:
./adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.amazon.firelauncher
The --user 0 option limits the operation to the primary user. It does not remove the package from the system. However, Fire OS builds can reject the command, and the command is not verified to work on every current Fire OS 7 or Fire OS 8 build.
Press the Home button or gesture after the command completes. If the replacement launcher was installed and opened correctly, it should now provide the home screen.
5. Restore Amazon’s launcher
If the new launcher causes problems, or if you need to undo the change, reconnect the tablet and run:
adb shell pm enable com.amazon.firelauncher
On macOS or Linux:
./adb shell pm enable com.amazon.firelauncher
If your tablet uses a different package name, replace com.amazon.firelauncher with the package identified by the package-list command.

Option 3: Use a launcher-helper application
Some helper applications redirect the Home action to a selected launcher instead of disabling Amazon’s launcher. This can be convenient, but it is the least predictable method on newer Fire OS releases. Amazon has limited or blocked older Home-button interception techniques, including LauncherHijack-style approaches.
- Install a compatible replacement launcher.
- Open it once and complete its setup.
- Install a launcher-helper app from a source you trust.
- Choose the replacement launcher in the helper’s settings.
- If the helper uses an accessibility service, open Fire OS’s accessibility settings and enable that service when prompted.
- Press Home and test the result.
A helper may need to be started again after a reboot. If Home returns to Amazon’s launcher, check that the helper’s accessibility service is still enabled and reapply its configuration. ADB-based disabling or Fire Toolbox is generally more consistent across reboots, but neither approach is guaranteed to survive Fire OS updates.
What to expect after changing launchers
- Widgets: support depends on the replacement launcher, Fire OS version, user profile, and app permissions. Widgets that rely on Google Play services may not work because those services are not included by default on Fire tablets.
- Amazon features: Amazon-specific home-screen panels and launcher features may disappear or behave differently.
- Updates: a Fire OS update can re-enable Amazon’s launcher, break a helper, or prevent the ADB disable command from working.
- Lock-screen advertisements: changing the launcher should not be treated as an ad-removal method. Launcher configuration and lock-screen-ad management are separate functions, and ad removal depends on the model and supported tools.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Fire Toolbox shows no tablet | Unlock the tablet, use a USB cable that supports data, try another USB port, accept the USB-debugging prompt, and install the appropriate computer drivers if necessary. |
| Home still opens Amazon’s launcher | Open the replacement launcher once, check the helper’s accessibility service, or reapply the Custom Launcher configuration in Fire Toolbox. |
| The home screen is blank | Reconnect with ADB and run adb shell pm enable com.amazon.firelauncher. The likely cause is disabling Amazon’s launcher before a functioning replacement was ready. |
| ADB says the package cannot be found | Run the package-list command and use the actual launcher package name. com.amazon.firelauncher is common, not universal. |
| ADB refuses to disable the package | The Fire OS build may block the change, or the package name may be wrong. Try Fire Toolbox’s Custom Launcher workflow or a compatible helper instead. |
| The launcher works until reboot | This is common with helper-based redirection. Start the helper again or use Fire Toolbox/ADB if your build supports it. |
| Amazon’s launcher returns after an update | Reapply the Toolbox or helper configuration. If the helper no longer works, look for a version compatible with the updated Fire OS. |
| Widgets are missing or malfunctioning | Check whether the launcher supports widgets and whether the widget app’s required permissions and services are installed. |
Which method should you use?
Use Fire Toolbox if you have a Windows PC and want the simplest repeatable setup. Use ADB if you are comfortable identifying packages and want a direct, reversible command-line change. Use a launcher helper only when you accept that Home redirection may be less reliable, especially after reboots and Fire OS updates.
FAQ
Can I select a launcher from Fire tablet settings?
Usually not through Android’s standard Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app menu. Fire OS generally does not expose that normal launcher-picker path, so use Fire Toolbox, ADB, or a compatible helper.

Do I need to root the Fire tablet?
No. The methods described here use USB debugging, package-management commands, Fire Toolbox, or a helper app. They do not require root access.
Is com.amazon.firelauncher always the correct package?
No. It is a commonly reported package name, but it can vary by Fire OS version or tablet model. Use pm list packages to inspect the tablet before disabling anything.
Will changing the launcher survive a Fire OS update?
Not necessarily. An update can re-enable Amazon’s launcher or break a helper-based redirection method. You may need to configure the replacement again.
Can changing the launcher remove lock-screen ads?
Do not rely on it for that purpose. Launcher replacement and lock-screen-ad management are separate functions, and ad-removal support varies by model.
What should I do if I disable the launcher by mistake?
Reconnect the tablet with ADB and run adb shell pm enable com.amazon.firelauncher. If that package name does not exist on your model, use the package name found with the launcher-list command.
The Bottom Line
Fire OS usually does not offer a standard Home-app picker, but you can run a different launcher without rooting. Install and open the replacement first, then use Fire Toolbox on Windows or ADB if your build permits disabling Amazon’s launcher. Keep the restore command available, because Fire OS updates and helper-app limitations can undo the change.
