To get YouTube in an app-like window on Windows 11, open youtube.com in Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome and install the site through the browser. This creates a browser-managed app window or shortcut, not proof of a distinct native Windows YouTube app.
Choose the browser you already use: Edge manages the result at edge://apps, while Chrome manages desktop web apps at chrome://apps. You can then create or pin shortcuts using that browser’s available options.
Install YouTube as an app in Microsoft Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge and go to https://www.youtube.com.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select More tools, then Apps.
- Select Install this site as an app.
- Follow the onscreen prompts.
Microsoft Support documents this route for installing a website as an app. If Edge presents an install prompt for YouTube, you can use that route as well. The result opens in a dedicated window, but a site installed as an app does not necessarily have all the capabilities of a Progressive Web App.
Open, pin, or manage the Edge app
- In Edge, enter edge://apps in the address bar.
- Find YouTube and select Details.
- Choose an available option to pin it to Start or the taskbar, create a desktop shortcut, configure auto-start, or uninstall it.
Install YouTube as an app in Google Chrome
- Open Google Chrome and go to https://www.youtube.com.
- Open the More menu.
- Select Cast, save, and share, then Install page as app.
- Follow the onscreen instructions.
Some websites may show an install icon in Chrome’s address bar. Menu labels and availability can vary, so follow the options shown in your current Chrome version.

Manage or remove the Chrome app
To view desktop web apps, enter chrome://apps in Chrome. Chrome’s web-app controls include creating shortcuts and uninstalling an app from its window’s More menu.
- Open the YouTube web app.
- Open its More menu and select Uninstall YouTube.
- Select Remove, and choose the optional Chrome-data deletion control if you want to remove that data too.
What to know before installing
- The app-like window or shortcut is managed by the browser used to install it and remains browser-backed.
- Installing the site does not promise offline YouTube playback. Chrome notes that some web apps may not work fully offline.
- You can visit youtube.com to watch videos. Sign in with a Google Account for account features such as subscriptions, playlists, purchases, and history.
- YouTube recommends its official site in a supported browser rather than unofficial app packages. YouTube warns that some third-party apps may not support YouTube content and that it may act against apps that breach its API terms.

- In Edge, enter edge://apps.

Do I need a Google Account?
You can visit YouTube without signing in. A Google Account enables features such as subscriptions, playlists, purchases, and history.
Will YouTube work offline after installation?
Do not assume so. Installing the website does not promise offline playback, and some web apps may not work fully offline.

How do I remove the app?
In Edge, go to edge://apps, open the app’s Details, and select Uninstall. In Chrome, open the web app, use its More menu to choose Uninstall YouTube, then select Remove.
