You can upgrade an activated Windows 11 Home installation to Pro from an elevated Command Prompt with DISM, provided you have a valid Windows 11 Pro license. The command changes the installed edition; it does not create a license or permanently activate Windows for free.
Before starting, save your work and make sure Windows 11 Home is activated. Check this at Start > Settings > System > Activation. The edition appears at the top, and the current status appears beside Activation state.
What you need before using CMD
- An activated copy of Windows 11 Home.
- A genuine Windows 11 Pro product key, matching digital license, or authorized volume-licensing arrangement.
- An administrator account.
- An internet connection for activation after the edition change.
A Windows product key has 25 characters in five groups, such as XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. If you purchased the upgrade through the Microsoft Store, you may have a digital license rather than a key.
Check your current Windows edition
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes when User Account Control asks for permission.
Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Get-CurrentEdition
For a normal Home installation, the output identifies the current edition as Core. Then check which editions this installation can accept:

DISM.exe /Online /Get-TargetEditions
Do not guess the target identifier. The output must list the edition that you intend to install. On a standard Windows 11 Home-to-Pro conversion, it normally lists Professional.
Upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro using CMD
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run the following command, replacing the placeholder with your genuine Pro key:
DISM.exe /Online /Set-Edition:Professional /AcceptEula /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
If /Get-TargetEditions returned a different target identifier, replace Professional with that exact value. Do not include angle brackets or spaces in the key.
- Enter the DISM command.
- Allow DISM to validate the target edition and product key.
- Follow any prompts to restart Windows.
- After Windows restarts, open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Confirm that the edition is now Windows 11 Pro and complete activation if Windows has not activated automatically.
The operation may take several minutes. Do not close the Command Prompt or power off the computer while the edition servicing operation is running.

What the DISM command does—and does not do
| Command part | Purpose |
|---|---|
/Online |
Targets the Windows installation currently running. |
/Set-Edition:Professional |
Requests a change to the Pro edition. Use the value returned by /Get-TargetEditions. |
/AcceptEula |
Accepts the Windows license terms for the operation. |
/ProductKey: |
Supplies the Windows 11 Pro product key used for the conversion. |
Changing the edition is not the same as activating Windows. DISM can convert the installation to Pro, but activation still requires a valid Pro license. A KMS client key or generic key is not a free retail license.
Do not use the generic KMS key as a free upgrade
The Windows 11 Pro KMS client key W269N-WFGWX-YVC9B-4J6C9-T83GX is intended for volume-licensing environments with an organization’s KMS host. It cannot activate a retail copy of Windows.
Using that key does not give a personal PC a permanent Pro license. If your computer is not connected to an authorized KMS service, activation will fail or remain dependent on that organization’s licensing setup.
Using slmgr instead
Microsoft also documents this command for installing a product key from an elevated Command Prompt:
Rank #3
- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
However, slmgr /ipk only installs or attempts to install the key. It does not, by itself, prove that Windows changed from Home to Pro or that the system activated. The key must match the installed edition and licensing channel.
For a Home-to-Pro conversion, use the DISM /Set-Edition command or the supported Activation settings workflow instead. Afterward, verify both the edition and activation status in Settings > System > Activation.
Use the Settings method if CMD fails
The graphical method is often simpler when you already have a Pro key:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Change product key, then select Change.
- Enter the 25-character Windows 11 Pro key.
- Select Next and approve the administrator prompt if one appears.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
If you do not have a Pro key, select Upgrade your edition of Windows > Open Store. Microsoft Store handles the purchase, installs Windows 11 Pro, and prompts you to restart.

Common DISM and activation problems
| Problem or code | Likely cause and fix |
|---|---|
| DISM says the target edition is unavailable | Run DISM.exe /Online /Get-TargetEditions and use only an edition listed in the output. DISM cannot downgrade an image or safely rerun an upgrade on an image already changed to a higher edition. |
0xC004E016 or 0xC004F210 |
The key is for a different Windows edition or version. A key for Enterprise, for example, cannot activate Windows 11 Home or Core. |
0xC004C003 |
The key may be invalid, used already, or attempted on too many devices. Check the key source and its license history. |
0xC004C008, 0xC004C770, or 0x803FA071 |
The key may already be in use or may have exceeded its permitted device count. |
0x803F7001 |
Windows cannot find a valid license. Go to Settings > System > Activation, choose Change product key, or select Go to Microsoft Store. |
0xC004FC03 or 0x8007267C |
The computer may be offline, a firewall may be blocking activation, or the activation service may be temporarily unavailable. Check the connection and try again later. |
0x80072F8F |
The date or time may be incorrect. Check Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable automatic time, and retry. |
0xC004E028 |
Another activation request is already being processed. Wait for it to finish, then check Activation again. |
If “Upgrade your edition of Windows” is missing
Microsoft says this can happen when the computer is already running Pro or when an edition upgrade is not available for that installation. Confirm the edition at the top of Settings > System > Activation, then run the DISM edition checks above.
Important limitations
- Run DISM from an administrator Command Prompt; a normal Command Prompt may return an access or permission error.
- Use
/Get-TargetEditionsbefore/Set-Edition. - Do not use
/Set-Editionto downgrade Windows. - Do not assume that a successful edition conversion means Windows is activated.
- Do not publish or share your real product key in screenshots, commands, or support posts.

FAQ
Can I upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro without a product key using CMD?
No. CMD can perform the edition conversion, but activation still requires a valid Windows 11 Pro product key, matching digital license, or authorized volume license. The Microsoft Store is the supported option if you need to buy the upgrade.
What is the CMD command to upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro?
Open Command Prompt as administrator and use DISM.exe /Online /Set-Edition:Professional /AcceptEula /ProductKey:YOUR-PRO-KEY. First run DISM.exe /Online /Get-TargetEditions and confirm that Professional is listed.
Does the generic Windows 11 Pro key activate Windows for free?
No. The commonly shared generic Pro key is a KMS client key for volume-licensing environments. It requires an authorized KMS host and cannot activate a retail Windows installation.

Can I use slmgr /ipk to switch from Home to Pro?
slmgr /ipk installs a product key, but installing a key alone does not prove that the edition changed or that Windows activated. Use DISM /Set-Edition or the Activation settings workflow for a supported Home-to-Pro conversion.
Why does DISM say that Professional is not a valid target edition?
The target identifier may differ for that particular installation, or the image may not support the conversion. Run DISM.exe /Online /Get-TargetEditions and use only a value listed there.
The Bottom Line
For a command-line upgrade, verify that Windows 11 Home is activated, open an elevated Command Prompt, check the available target editions, and run DISM with a genuine Pro key:
DISM.exe /Online /Get-TargetEditions
DISM.exe /Online /Set-Edition:Professional /AcceptEula /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Restart when prompted, then check Settings > System > Activation. The command changes the edition; only a legitimate Pro license completes activation.
