Windows 11 can pin installed apps to the taskbar directly, but a desktop shortcut usually needs one extra menu step. Right-click the shortcut, choose Show more options, and then select Pin to taskbar.
If you are trying to pin a folder, file, drive, or This PC, first create a normal desktop .lnk shortcut. Windows does not normally offer a direct taskbar-pinning command for those shell objects.
Pin an existing desktop shortcut to the taskbar
- Find the shortcut on the Windows 11 desktop.
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Show more options. This opens the classic context menu.
- Select Pin to taskbar.
The compact Windows 11 menu may not display Pin to taskbar. That does not necessarily mean the shortcut cannot be pinned; check the expanded menu first.
Windows does not guarantee that the command will appear for every shortcut, Windows 11 build, or shell-object shortcut. If it is missing, use one of the shortcut methods below.

Pin an installed app from Start
For a normal installed application, creating a desktop shortcut is unnecessary:
- Open Start.
- Select All apps.
- Find the application.
- Right-click it and select More → Pin to taskbar.
In some Start menu contexts, Pin to taskbar appears directly after you right-click the app, without the More submenu.
Create a desktop shortcut for an installed app, then pin it
Use this route when you specifically need a desktop shortcut as well as a taskbar icon:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
shell:AppsFolder, then press Enter. - Right-click the app you want to add.
- Select Create shortcut.
- When Windows asks whether to place the shortcut on the desktop, select Yes.
- On the desktop, right-click the new shortcut.
- Select Show more options → Pin to taskbar.

You can create a shortcut manually when Windows does not provide one:

- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Select New → Shortcut.
- In Type the location of the item, enter the program, file, folder, or command you want to launch.
- Select Next.
- Enter a name for the shortcut.
- Select Finish.
- Right-click the new shortcut, select Show more options, and choose Pin to taskbar.
Pin a folder, file, or drive
Windows 11 generally does not pin an ordinary folder, document, or drive directly from its normal right-click menu. Create a desktop shortcut first, then make the shortcut launch through File Explorer.
- Create a desktop shortcut using the Shortcut wizard, or right-click an existing shortcut.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- In the Target field, prepend
explorerfollowed by one space to the existing path. - Put quotation marks around paths containing spaces.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Show more options → Pin to taskbar.
For example, a folder shortcut should use a target like:
explorer "C:PathToFolder"The executable name, the space after it, and the quotation marks are significant. Without explorer, Windows may treat the target as a document or ordinary file shortcut instead of as a File Explorer location.

After pinning, you can leave the desktop shortcut in place or delete it. Removing the desktop shortcut does not necessarily remove the existing taskbar pin, but keeping it makes the shortcut easier to repair later.

Pin This PC to the taskbar
This PC is a shell object rather than an ordinary application. Right-clicking the This PC item itself may not provide the usual Pin to taskbar command. Create a conventional desktop shortcut that opens it instead.
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Select New → Shortcut.
- In Type the location of the item, enter either command:
explorer.exe shell:MyComputerFolderor:
explorer.exe shell:::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}- Select Next.
- Name the shortcut This PC.
- Select Finish.
- Right-click the new shortcut, select Show more options, and choose Pin to taskbar.
Restore the standard This PC icon
- Right-click the desktop shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Change Icon….
- In Look for icons in this file, enter:
%SystemRoot%System32imageres.dll- Select the standard This PC icon.
- Select OK → Apply → OK.
Now pin the shortcut using Show more options → Pin to taskbar.
Pin a website to the taskbar
Microsoft Edge
Edge has its own taskbar-pinning workflow:
- Open the website in Microsoft Edge.
- Select the three-dot Settings and more menu.
- Select More tools → Launch taskbar pinning wizard.
- Follow the wizard to choose the site and confirm the pin.
Google Chrome
- Open the website in Chrome.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Select More tools → Create shortcut.
- Confirm the shortcut.
- Find the resulting desktop shortcut.
- Right-click it and select Show more options → Pin to taskbar.
For managed Windows taskbars, use a Windows shortcut file (.lnk) rather than a web shortcut file (.url). Microsoft’s taskbar-layout XML supports a desktop application link path for .lnk files but does not support links to .url files.
Why “Pin to taskbar” is missing

Do not use the old Windows 10 folder-toolbar approach. Windows 11’s supported taskbar configuration uses Taskbar settings for normal user changes and taskbar-layout XML for managed or provisioned deployments.

Managed taskbar deployment
Administrators provisioning a classic desktop application can reference its .lnk file in taskbar-layout XML. A documented element looks like this:

FAQ
Can I pin any desktop shortcut to the Windows 11 taskbar?
Many conventional application shortcuts can be pinned, but the command is not guaranteed for every shortcut or Windows 11 context. Right-click the shortcut, choose Show more options, and look for Pin to taskbar. For shell objects such as This PC, create a conventional .lnk shortcut first.
Why is Pin to taskbar not in the Windows 11 right-click menu?
Windows 11 initially shows a compact context menu. Select Show more options to open the classic menu, where Pin to taskbar normally appears.

How do I pin a folder to the taskbar?
Create a desktop shortcut to the folder, open its Properties, and prepend explorer plus a space to the Target path—for example, explorer “C:Projects”. Apply the change, then use Show more options → Pin to taskbar.
Can I pin This PC directly to the taskbar?
The This PC shell object may not show a direct pin command. Create a desktop shortcut with explorer.exe shell:MyComputerFolder as its location, then pin that shortcut through Show more options.
Can I pin a website without creating a desktop shortcut?
Yes, in Edge. Open the site, select the three-dot menu, then choose More tools → Launch taskbar pinning wizard. Chrome uses More tools → Create shortcut, after which you pin the resulting shortcut.
