Windows 11’s normal Chrome uninstall removes the registered browser, but it does not necessarily remove Chrome profiles, leftover local data, or separately installed Chrome channels. For a complete removal, uninstall Chrome first, then inspect its user-data folder and remove only the Chrome-specific files you no longer need.
Before you begin: export or sync anything you need to keep. Deleting the local profile can remove bookmarks, saved passwords, cookies, history, extensions, and settings that have not been backed up. Data already synchronized to your Google Account may remain online and may also be available on other devices.
Uninstall Google Chrome from Windows 11
Use Windows 11’s Installed apps page to launch Chrome’s own uninstaller.
- Close every Google Chrome window.
- Select Start > Settings.
- Open Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Google Chrome. You can use the search box if the list is long.
- Select the More button (⋯) next to Chrome, then select Uninstall.
- Select Uninstall again.
- When User Account Control asks whether to allow the app to make changes, select Yes.
Google’s current Windows 11 instructions do not list an Also delete your browsing data checkbox. That option appears in Google’s separate Windows 10 instructions, so do not assume it should appear on every Windows 11 installation.

These steps follow the current guidance from Google and Microsoft.
Alternative ways to uninstall Chrome
Use the Start menu
- Open Start and select All apps.
- Find Google Chrome.
- Right-click it and select Uninstall.
Windows may open Installed apps or another uninstall interface. Complete the prompts shown on screen.
Use Control Panel
Control Panel is useful if Chrome does not appear in Windows 11’s Installed apps list.
- Search the taskbar for Control Panel and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click Google Chrome.
- Select Uninstall or Uninstall/Change, then follow the prompts.
Some programs cannot currently be removed through Windows Settings, which is why Microsoft documents Control Panel as a fallback.
Fix the “Please close all Google Chrome windows” error
Chrome can continue running background processes after its visible windows have closed. Background apps, extensions, or a component that did not exit cleanly can keep the uninstaller from starting.
- Close Chrome.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes tab, look for remaining Google Chrome tasks.
- Select each remaining Chrome task and choose End task.
- Retry Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Google Chrome > ⋯ > Uninstall.
Chrome’s background mode can allow background apps to keep running after the browser window closes. If the message returns, restart Windows and try the uninstall again before deleting any files manually.
Uninstall Chrome with WinGet
WinGet can be useful when the graphical uninstall entry is difficult to find. Open PowerShell or Windows Terminal and first identify the registered entry:
winget list --name "Google Chrome"The list command can show applications installed by methods other than WinGet, so it may still find a normally installed Chrome copy.

For the current Google Chrome package identifier, use:
winget uninstall --id Google.Chrome --exact --source wingetHere, --id filters by the application identifier, --exact prevents a loose name match, and --source winget avoids Microsoft Store agreement prompts that can otherwise appear.
If the command reports that no package matches, use the exact name or identifier returned by winget list. Do not assume that every Chrome installation has the same registration entry.

Delete Chrome’s local profile data
Uninstalling the application removes the registered Chrome program. It does not necessarily remove the local Chrome profile directory. That directory can contain browsing history, bookmarks, cookies, extensions, settings, and saved credentials.
Only continue if you intend to delete those local profiles.
- Confirm Chrome has been uninstalled.
- Confirm that no Chrome processes are running. If necessary, check Task Manager as described above.
- Press Win + R.
- Enter the following path and press Enter:
%LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChromeUser Data- Delete the User Data folder if you want to remove all stable Chrome profiles for the current Windows user.
The normal stable-channel location is %LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChromeUser Data. The default profile is usually inside its Default subfolder.
Do not delete the entire %LOCALAPPDATA%Google folder. Other Google applications may use folders beneath it. Remove only the Chrome-specific folder.

Find a custom Chrome profile location before uninstalling
The standard path may not be the active location if an administrator configured Chrome’s UserDataDir policy or Chrome was started with the --user-data-dir option.
Before uninstalling, open Chrome and enter this address:
chrome://versionFind Profile Path. Its parent directory is the active User Data directory. Record that path, uninstall Chrome, and remove that specific folder afterward if complete local-data removal is required.
Chrome can also be launched with a custom location such as:

If the PC belongs to an organization, contact its administrator before deleting managed Chrome data.
Remove Chrome Beta, Dev, Canary, and Chrome for Testing
Stable Chrome is not the only Chrome installation that may be present. Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for separate entries such as:
- Google Chrome Beta
- Google Chrome Dev
- Google Chrome Canary
- Google Chrome for Testing
Uninstall each entry separately if you want every Chrome variant removed.
Their typical user-data locations are:
%LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChrome BetaUser Data
%LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChrome DevUser Data
%LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChrome SxSUser Data
%LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChrome for TestingUser DataDeleting stable Chrome does not prove that these separate variants or their profiles have also been removed.

Remove Chrome data for another Windows user
Chrome profile data is stored under each Windows user’s own %LOCALAPPDATA% directory. Removing the current user’s profile does not remove profiles belonging to other accounts on the same PC.
If the goal is to remove Chrome from the entire computer:
- Sign in to each Windows account that has used Chrome.
- Uninstall any Chrome application entries as appropriate.
- For each account, inspect and remove its Chrome-specific
User Datafolder if local profile deletion is intended.
A system-wide Chrome installation may be available to multiple users while profile data remains separate for each account.
When Chrome is missing from Installed apps and Control Panel
This can happen when the installation registration is damaged, Chrome was only partially removed, a nonstandard or portable copy is present, another Chrome channel is installed, or the installation belongs to another user or organization.

If the entry is present, use its own uninstall option. If Chrome is listed but uninstall fails, close its processes and retry, then try Control Panel or the WinGet method.
For a damaged uninstall registration, Microsoft’s supported next step is the Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter.
If only an unregistered Chrome folder remains, remove the confirmed Chrome program and profile folders after checking that Chrome is not running. Do not treat registry editing as a normal cleanup step. Google’s standard uninstall procedure does not require deleting Chrome registry keys, and arbitrary Google registry entries can affect other software or policies.

Not necessarily. Removing the Windows application and local profile files is different from removing information synchronized to a Google Account. Google states that synchronized information may remain on its servers after Chrome is removed from the computer.

Be careful when deleting browsing data while signed in. Deleting synchronized data can affect other devices and the Google Account, not just this Windows installation.

FAQ
What is the correct Chrome uninstall path in Windows 11?
Use Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Google Chrome, select ⋯ > Uninstall, select Uninstall again, and approve the User Account Control prompt.
Why does Chrome say I must close all windows when none are open?
Chrome may still have background processes running. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, end the remaining Google Chrome tasks, and retry the uninstall.
Will uninstalling Chrome remove bookmarks and passwords?
Uninstalling the application does not necessarily remove the local profile. Deleting the Chrome User Data folder can remove local bookmarks, passwords, history, cookies, extensions, and settings that are not backed up. Synchronized data may remain in the Google Account.

Where is Chrome’s user-data folder in Windows 11?
For the stable channel and current Windows user, it is normally %LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChromeUser Data. Check chrome://version and the Profile Path field if a custom location may be configured.
Can I delete the Google folder after uninstalling Chrome?
No. Delete only the confirmed Chrome-specific folder, such as %LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChrome. Other Google software may use folders beneath %LOCALAPPDATA%Google.
