Neobanks make account opening, transfers, budgeting, and card management possible from a phone, but the label hides important differences. Some are technology companies using partner banks; others are banks with their own charters. Fee schedules, direct-deposit rules, ATM access, and variable APYs also change frequently.
This comparison uses the latest verified provider information available for the services covered. Because several source pages are dated in 2026, the figures below should be read as current reference points rather than fixed 2025 promises. Check the provider’s fee and rate page before opening an account.
Quick comparison
| Provider | Best for | Important condition | Banking structure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chime | Early access to qualifying payroll and simple everyday spending | Early deposit timing is not guaranteed; SpotMe requires at least $200 in qualifying monthly direct deposits | Financial technology company; banking services provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A. |
| SoFi Checking and Savings | People who want checking and savings in one app, with direct-deposit-linked benefits | Its qualifying APY definition excludes external-bank ACH transfers, wires, P2P payments, and several other deposit types | SoFi Bank, N.A., Member FDIC |
| Ally Bank | Goal-based savings and automated saving tools | Some Savings and Money Market transactions are limited to 10 combined per statement cycle | Online bank |
| Revolut Standard | App-based money movement and Revolut-to-Revolut transfers | “Free” Standard does not make every card load, ATM withdrawal, physical card, or wire free | U.S. financial product with a separate Standard fee schedule |
There is no universal winner. Chime is the most direct fit for qualifying payroll users who value early availability. SoFi is stronger when direct deposit also unlocks the account’s advertised savings benefit. Ally is the more savings-oriented choice. Revolut is attractive for users who keep most activity inside its app and understand the transaction fees.
1. Chime: best for early payroll access
Chime’s headline feature is early direct deposit. The important detail is how it works: Chime makes funds available when it receives the payer’s payment file, which may be up to two days before the scheduled payday. That is not a guaranteed two-day advance. Your employer’s payroll provider, weekends, and federal or bank holidays can change the arrival time.

There is no separate early-pay enrollment step. Once qualifying direct deposit is established, the feature is automatic. To find the setup tools in the current app, open Move Money, then choose Move your direct deposit or Set up direct deposit. The available options include Get Completed Form and Find Employer.
SpotMe is useful, but it is conditional
SpotMe is not unlimited, general-purpose overdraft protection. Current eligibility requires at least $200 in qualifying direct deposits to the Chime Checking Account each month. The starting limit can be $20 and may increase to $200 or more according to account history, deposit activity, spending, and other risk factors. Your current limit is shown in the Chime app and can change.
SpotMe does not cover ACH transfers, Pay Anyone transfers, or Chime Checkbook transactions. Even when a transaction qualifies, an ATM operator, out-of-network ATM, or over-the-counter cash withdrawal may still impose a separate fee.
Banking and insurance detail
Chime explicitly describes itself as “a financial technology company, not a bank.” Its banking services are provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., Members FDIC. Chime itself is not FDIC-insured; pass-through FDIC coverage depends on applicable conditions. That distinction matters when comparing Chime with a bank such as SoFi Bank.

Current membership terminology includes Chime Plus and Chime Prime. Chime Plus requires either one qualifying direct deposit of $200 or more, or qualifying direct deposits totaling $400 or more during the preceding 34 days. Chime Prime requires at least $3,000 in qualifying direct deposits during the previous 34 days.
Chime’s current page advertises 2% cash back for Chime Plus and 5% for Chime Prime on up to $1,500 of eligible secured Chime Visa Credit Card purchases in a selected category. Program terms and eligibility restrictions apply, so this should not be treated as unrestricted cash back on every purchase.

2. SoFi Checking and Savings: best for direct-deposit-linked banking
SoFi Bank, N.A. is a Member FDIC bank. Its fee page lists $0 monthly account fees, $0 minimum-balance fees, and $0 overdraft fees. Those headline fees are simple; the more technical question is whether your income qualifies for SoFi’s stated direct-deposit benefit.
SoFi defines an Eligible Direct Deposit as recurring income such as payroll, pension, or government benefits paid through ACH every 31 calendar days. SoFi says there is no minimum Eligible Direct Deposit amount, although it may determine eligibility at its discretion and request documentation.
Deposits that do not qualify
A normal transfer into SoFi is not automatically an Eligible Direct Deposit. SoFi specifically excludes:
- Check deposits
- PayPal, Venmo, Wise, and similar peer-to-peer transfers
- Merchant transactions through PayPal, Stripe, or Square
- ACH transfers from an external bank
- External wires
- Nonrecurring deposits such as an IRS tax refund
This is the most common source of confusion. Moving money from another checking account may fund SoFi, but it does not necessarily activate the same rate or benefit as employer payroll.
How to troubleshoot an APY-status problem
- Confirm that the deposit came from an eligible recurring source rather than an external transfer or payment service.
- Wait until the day after the qualifying deposit posts.
- Open the APY Details page and check whether the qualifying status appears.
- If it does not, contact SoFi and provide the requested validation.
SoFi says that after validation, the higher APY begins from the contact date for the next 31 calendar days. Rates are variable. The current support page identifies its displayed rates as current as of May 28, 2026, so an article published in 2025 should not present a particular APY as permanent.
Fees outside the headline account fees
Partner locations may charge up to $4.95 per cash deposit. Outbound domestic wires cost $30 per wire. If you rarely deposit cash and do not send domestic wires, these may not matter; if you do either regularly, include them in the comparison rather than focusing only on monthly fees.

3. Ally Bank: best for organized savings
Ally is a better fit for saving toward multiple goals than for chasing a particular checking-account promotion. Its Savings Account currently has a $0 monthly maintenance fee and a $0 minimum opening deposit. The account includes Buckets, Recurring Transfers, Round Ups, and Surprise Savings.
Ally allows up to 30 savings buckets inside one Savings Account. You can separate money for rent, travel, an emergency fund, or annual bills without opening 30 separate accounts. The total account balance continues earning interest, including money assigned to buckets.
Round Ups have a specific trigger
Round Ups do not necessarily move money after every individual card purchase. Ally accumulates the round-up amount until the total reaches at least $5, then transfers the accumulated amount to savings. Each transfer is between $5 and $20. Once a round-up transfer starts, it cannot be canceled, although you can move the money back to checking afterward.
Withdrawal-limit warning
Ally combines certain Savings and Money Market withdrawals and transfers under a limit of 10 per statement cycle. Ally says the fee for exceeding the limit is currently $0, but repeated excessive activity may result in account closure. That is different from saying withdrawals are unlimited: someone using savings as a high-frequency spending account could still create an account-management problem.
Ally’s displayed Savings APY is 3%, marked correct as of August 5, 2026. The rate is variable and can change. Ally separately dates its feature information as accurate as of July 20, 2026; those dates should not be collapsed into one undated claim.
4. Revolut Standard: best for app-first money movement
Revolut Standard has no subscription fee, but “free plan” does not mean every action is free. The current U.S. Personal Fees page was last updated April 30, 2026.

Funding, cards, and ATM costs
Adding money by bank transfer has no load fee, excluding inbound U.S. domestic wire payments. Funding with a domestic personal debit card can cost up to 1%; using a domestic personal credit card can cost up to 3%. The app displays the applicable fee.
The first physical card can cost up to $4.99. Standard delivery is $0–$5, priority delivery is $16.99, and global express delivery is $19.99, subject to destination variation. The first virtual card has no issuance fee.
Recommended Free Tools
In-network ATM withdrawals have no Revolut fee. Standard-plan out-of-network withdrawals can cost up to 2% of the withdrawal value, in addition to an ATM operator’s or network’s fee. Currency conversion during an ATM withdrawal can add another charge.
Transfers and wires
Transfers to other Revolut users have no transfer fee. Payments to bank accounts outside the Revolut app may incur charges. U.S. domestic wires cost $10 per inbound or outbound wire.
Revolut works best when your normal behavior matches its fee structure: fund the account by bank transfer, use the virtual card or an appropriately priced physical card, use in-network ATMs, and send money within Revolut when possible. Frequent cash withdrawals, card-funded loads, and domestic wires can make the Standard plan less economical.
What to check before opening any neobank account
- Identify the actual bank. A technology brand may use a partner bank. Look for the legal entity providing banking services and the conditions for FDIC pass-through coverage.
- Read the direct-deposit definition. Payroll, a bank-to-bank ACH transfer, a tax refund, and a payment-app transfer may all look similar in a transaction list but receive different treatment.
- Test your cash plan. Check ATM-network rules, operator fees, cash-deposit fees, and whether the account supports the locations you actually use.
- Separate variable rates from permanent features. APYs can change. A savings tool such as buckets may remain useful even after its rate changes.
- Check excluded transaction types. Overdraft programs and promotional benefits often cover card purchases but exclude ACH, person-to-person transfers, wires, or checkbook transactions.
- Save the fee page. Take a screenshot or bookmark the provider’s current fee schedule when you open the account. This is especially useful for products whose pricing changes by plan or transaction type.
Which one should you choose?
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Getting qualifying payroll as soon as the provider sends it | Chime | Early availability is automatic after direct deposit is established, though the timing is not guaranteed. |
| A bank account with a direct-deposit-linked savings benefit | SoFi | It combines checking and savings, but you must meet the specific Eligible Direct Deposit definition. |
| Separating savings goals without many accounts | Ally | One Savings Account can contain up to 30 buckets, with automated saving tools. |
| Keeping transfers and card activity inside one mobile ecosystem | Revolut Standard | Revolut-to-Revolut transfers are free, but external wires, card loads, and some ATM use are chargeable. |
FAQ
Are neobanks FDIC insured?
It depends on the provider and structure. Chime says it is a financial technology company, not a bank; its banking services are provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., and pass-through FDIC coverage depends on applicable conditions. SoFi identifies SoFi Bank, N.A. as a Member FDIC bank. Check the provider’s legal disclosures rather than relying on the word “neobank.”

Does Chime always pay direct deposit two days early?
No. Chime makes funds available when it receives the payer’s payment file, which may be up to two days before the scheduled date. Employer and payroll-provider submission timing, weekends, and federal or bank holidays can delay availability.
What direct deposits qualify for SoFi’s APY benefit?
SoFi describes an Eligible Direct Deposit as recurring payroll, pension, or government-benefit income paid through ACH every 31 calendar days. External-bank ACH transfers, wires, P2P payments, merchant transactions, check deposits, and nonrecurring deposits such as tax refunds are excluded from that definition.
Does Revolut Standard have no fees?
The Standard subscription has no fee, but individual transactions can cost money. Current examples include card-funded loads of up to 1% for domestic personal debit cards and up to 3% for domestic personal credit cards, out-of-network ATM fees of up to 2%, physical-card and delivery charges, and $10 U.S. domestic wire fees.
Is Ally’s savings withdrawal fee still charged?
Ally’s current page lists a $0 fee for exceeding its combined 10-per-statement-cycle limit for certain Savings and Money Market transactions. However, Ally says repeated excessive activity may lead to account closure, so the absence of a fee does not mean unlimited activity is risk-free.
The Bottom Line
Choose Chime if qualifying payroll timing and a simple spending account matter most. Choose SoFi if you can route genuine recurring income there and want checking and savings together. Choose Ally for structured, goal-based saving. Choose Revolut Standard when app-based transfers are your priority and you can avoid its paid funding, ATM, and wire scenarios.
Before applying, verify the provider’s current APY, fee schedule, eligibility rules, and banking entity. Those details—not the “neobank” label—determine whether the account is actually a good fit.
