1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWindows 11 does not provide a separate setting for changing only the font used by desktop icon labels. The supported way to make those labels larger is Text size, which also enlarges text in title bars, menus, apps, and other parts of Windows.
If you want the icon graphic and its label to become larger together, use the desktop’s View menu or hold Ctrl while scrolling the mouse wheel.
Make desktop icon-label text larger
Use Windows 11’s accessibility text control:
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Go to Accessibility > Text size.
- Move the Text size slider to the right. The preview shows how the text will look.
- Select Apply.
This changes more than desktop labels. Microsoft says the setting affects Windows text including icon texts, title bars, and menus. It is therefore the correct supported option when the labels are difficult to read, but it is not a desktop-only font-size control.
You can reach the same page faster by pressing Windows + U, then selecting Text size.

Make the desktop icons and labels larger together
If the icon graphic is also too small, change the desktop icon size instead of the text size:
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Point to View.
- Select Large icons, Medium icons, or Small icons.
This resizes the icon and its label as a group. It does not give you an independent font-size setting for the label.
There is also a quick mouse method:
- Click an empty area of the desktop.
- Hold Ctrl.
- Scroll the mouse wheel up or down until the icons reach the desired size.
Scrolling up makes the desktop icons larger; scrolling down makes them smaller. This method changes desktop icon size, not the Windows text-size setting.
Use Display scaling for a larger overall interface
When desktop icons, text, images, and apps all appear too small, use Windows display scaling:

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Under Scale & layout, expand the Scale menu.
- Choose a larger percentage.
Scaling affects the whole display rather than just icon labels. Some apps may not show the new size until you sign out and sign back in.
Which setting should you use?
| Goal | Use this setting | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Make desktop labels and other Windows text easier to read | Settings > Accessibility > Text size | Windows text, including icon labels, menus, and title bars |
| Make desktop icons and their labels larger together | Desktop right-click > View | Desktop icon size and the label arrangement |
| Adjust desktop icons quickly | Click desktop, hold Ctrl, and scroll | Desktop icon size |
| Make almost everything larger | Settings > System > Display > Scale | Text, apps, images, and other display elements |
What does Desktop icon settings do?
The Desktop icon settings dialog is not a font-size control. To open it, go to Start > Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings.
That dialog controls which standard icons appear on the desktop, such as This PC, User’s Files, Network, and Recycle Bin. It does not change the font used for their labels.
Why older instructions do not work
Some Windows guides still direct users to Control Panel > Personalization > Window Color and Appearance > Advanced appearance settings > Icons. That dedicated graphical control is not part of the current Windows 11 interface. The current supported choices are the system-wide Text size and Scale settings, plus the desktop’s icon-size controls.

About PowerShell and registry workarounds
You may find commands such as this one presented as a way to change the desktop icon font:
Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKCU:SoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellBags1Desktop" -Name IconSize -Value 48
Stop-Process -Name explorer
That is not a desktop icon-font-size command. The IconSize value changes the desktop icon-size value, entered as a decimal number; it does not independently change the label font.
It is also an advanced, non-Settings workaround. It may fail to produce a visible change if the wrong registry value is used, the number is entered as a separate command, or Explorer restores another icon-size state. Avoid changing the registry for this purpose unless you understand how to back up and restore the relevant settings.

Microsoft’s current documentation does not provide an official Windows 11 control for desktop-only icon-label font size. Registry edits and third-party utilities that claim to provide one should not be treated as supported Windows features.
Windows 10 note
The Microsoft support pages describing these controls cover Windows 11 and Windows 10. However, Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date.
