Microsoft Teams has no ordinary-user command that permanently erases an entire chat for everyone. You can hide or remove a one-on-one chat from your own view, delete a message you sent if your organization allows it, or leave a group chat; Microsoft 365 retention policies and holds determine whether compliance copies remain.

This guide explains what each option does and what “permanent” can mean in Microsoft 365.

What happens when you delete Teams chat history?

A chat-removal action normally changes what you can see; it does not remove other participants’ copies. Retention and legal holds may also preserve content after it disappears from the Teams interface.

Action What it removes What other participants see
Hide The chat from your visible list temporarily Their copy is unchanged
Remove chat history The one-on-one chat from your account and search The other person still sees the chat
Delete a message A message you sent, if permitted It is removed from the conversation, but compliance copies may remain
Leave a group or meeting chat Your participation and, if selected, the chat from your lists The history remains for other members
Delete a team Team activity and associated content, subject to retention Access is removed, but retained content may remain

How to remove a one-on-one chat from your account

Use this option to remove a conversation from your own Teams account rather than merely hide it.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400)
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Open Microsoft Teams and select Chat.
  2. Find the one-on-one conversation.
  3. Select More options next to it.
  4. Select Remove chat history.
  5. Confirm if prompted.

You can no longer access the chat or its existing messages, including through Teams search. The other participant keeps access. This action does not override Microsoft 365 retention or eDiscovery requirements.

Hide a chat without deleting its history

Select the conversation, choose More options, then select Hide. The chat can be found again through search, so use this option to organize your list, not to delete content or protect privacy.

Remove yourself from a group or meeting chat

To leave a group or meeting chat:

  1. Select the chat and choose More options.
  2. Select Leave.
  3. Select the confirmation checkbox to remove the chat from your chat and search lists.
  4. Select Leave again.

Leaving prevents you from sending further messages but does not delete the history for other members. A meeting owner cannot delete or leave the meeting chat; a participant can.

On an iPhone or Android phone

  1. Open the Chat tab.
  2. Press and hold the conversation.
  3. For a one-on-one chat, confirm with Delete.
  4. For a group chat, confirm with Leave.

Wording can vary by app version. Deleting a one-on-one chat affects your account; leaving a group chat does not erase its shared history.

Delete individual messages you sent

To remove a message rather than a whole conversation, use the message’s delete option.

Desktop and web Teams

  1. Open the chat or channel.
  2. Hover over your sent message.
  3. Select More options, then Delete.

Mobile chat messages

Press and hold your message, then select the delete option.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Mobile channel posts

Select More options on the post or message, then select the delete option.

To reverse the action immediately, return to the deleted message and select Undo. By default, you can delete only messages you sent. Organization messaging policies may grant team owners or users with full chat permissions broader rights, or may disable deletion. If Delete or Edit is missing, ask your administrator; there is no client-side workaround.

Can you permanently delete Teams chat history for everyone?

Not as a normal end-user action. Removing your chat history does not remove another participant’s copy, and deleting a message does not guarantee that every Microsoft 365 compliance copy is immediately destroyed.

Microsoft’s Teams retention guidance says policies can retain messages, delete them after a defined period, or retain them for a period and then delete them. The retention period starts when a message is created, not when it is edited.

A retention policy, Litigation Hold, delay hold, or eDiscovery hold can preserve deleted or edited content in a secured location for compliance searches. Conflicting rules favor retention, and conflicting retention periods favor the longest period. A message can therefore vanish from Teams while remaining available to authorized compliance or eDiscovery users.

How long can deletion take?

Microsoft’s Teams retention guidance says processing is asynchronous and timer jobs typically run every one to seven days; messages can remain visible for up to approximately seven days after their configured expiration date. Microsoft’s Teams retention details say that a user-deleted message subject to a retain-only or retain-and-delete policy does not enter the hidden SubstrateHolds folder for 21 days. It then remains there for at least one day before permanent deletion, assuming no hold or conflicting policy applies.

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Teams messages are handled through the Azure-powered chat service for normal use and Exchange Online mailboxes for compliance operations. Final removal from both locations occurs only after applicable retention and hold requirements are satisfied; what you see in Teams does not prove that a record is gone from compliance systems.

Administrator options for message and chat deletion

Administrators manage user-facing deletion capabilities in the Microsoft Teams admin center.

  1. Open the Teams admin center and go to Messaging policies.
  2. Select Add to create a policy, or open an existing policy.
  3. Enter a name and description, then configure the relevant settings.
  4. Select Save and assign the policy as appropriate.
Policy setting Effect
Delete sent messages Controls whether users can delete messages they sent in chat.
Owners can delete sent messages Allows team owners to delete messages or posts sent by others in channels. Owners also need Delete sent messages enabled to delete their own messages.
Delete chat Controls whether users can remove entire conversations from their own chat list. Other participants retain their messages.

Microsoft’s messaging-policy guidance says Delete chat is on by default. If an administrator turns it off, users no longer see the chat-delete option. Messaging policies govern user actions; retention policies govern how long Microsoft 365 preserves or deletes data.

Set a Microsoft Purview retention policy

For organization-wide deletion after a defined period, an authorized Microsoft 365 administrator must use Microsoft Purview, not a user-level Teams command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Microsoft Purview portal.
  2. Go to Solutions → Data Lifecycle Management → Policies → Retention policies.
  3. Select New retention policy.
  4. Choose the retention period and whether content is retained, deleted, or retained and then deleted.
  5. Select the Teams locations to target.
  6. Review and publish the policy.

Microsoft’s Teams retention guidance says policies can target the organization or selected users and teams, including private chats and standard-, private-, and shared-channel messages. A qualifying license is required for affected users; examples include Office 365 E3 and Office 365 A3.

A retention policy is not an instant purge button. Holds and other applicable rules affect the outcome. Administrators should document a policy before applying it because changing retention settings can affect regulated records.

Delete an entire team

Delete a team only when the team itself should be retired; it is not a substitute for deleting one chat.

  1. Open the Teams admin center.
  2. Go to Teams and select the team.
  3. Select Delete, then select Delete again to confirm.

Microsoft’s team deletion guidance says this removes activity in standard and private channels, associated site collections, files, and chats, subject to retention. The associated Microsoft 365 group is soft-deleted and normally retained for 30 days. A deleted team cannot be restored directly; restoring its associated group restores team content.

Why PowerShell will not permanently purge an ordinary chat

There is no documented end-user PowerShell command that permanently purges an individual Teams chat or all chat history outside Microsoft 365 retention and hold processing.

PowerShell examples sometimes quoted for this purpose manage Teams call-log retention, not ordinary chat messages. Microsoft’s Purview retention-policy guidance includes examples such as:

New-AppRetentionCompliancePolicy -Name “<PolicyName>” -Applications “User:MicrosoftTeamsCallLog” -ExchangeLocation “All”

New-AppRetentionComplianceRule -Name “<RuleName>” -Policy “<PolicyName>” -RetentionDuration 365 -RetentionDurationDisplayHint Days -RetentionComplianceAction Delete

FAQ

Does deleting a Teams chat delete it for everyone?

No. Removing or deleting a chat affects the user who performs the action. Other participants can continue to see their copy unless an organization-wide retention process later removes the content.

Can I delete a group chat permanently?

You can leave a group chat and remove it from your own chat and search lists, but leaving does not delete its history for other members. There is no normal end-user option to erase the shared group-chat history for everyone.

Why can other people still see a chat I deleted?

Chat removal is account-specific. Your action removes your access or view; it does not recall the conversation from another participant’s account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is the Delete option missing in Teams?

Your organization’s messaging policy may disable deletion. Users can normally delete only their own messages; broader channel-deletion permissions must be enabled for appropriate owners or users.

Does deleting a Teams message remove it from eDiscovery?

Not necessarily. Retention policies, Litigation Holds, delay holds, and eDiscovery holds can preserve deleted or edited content in a secured compliance location.

How long does Microsoft 365 take to permanently delete retained Teams messages?

It depends on the policy and any holds. Microsoft’s Teams retention guidance says timer jobs typically run every one to seven days. Microsoft’s retention details describe a 21-day delay before certain user-deleted messages enter SubstrateHolds, followed by at least one day there before final deletion when no conflicting requirement applies.

Is there a PowerShell command to delete all Teams chat history?

There is no documented end-user PowerShell command that permanently purges ordinary Teams chat history. Some PowerShell examples manage Teams call-log retention, which is a different data type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For your own one-on-one chat, use More options → Remove chat history. For one message, use More options → Delete. For a group or meeting chat, use Leave, knowing the history remains for other participants. None of these actions guarantees immediate, universal destruction: Microsoft 365 retention policies and legal holds control whether compliance copies survive. Only an authorized administrator can define organization-wide retention or deletion behavior.
