Whether an old Yahoo Mail account can be recovered depends on why access was lost. A forgotten password, an account you voluntarily closed recently, and a mailbox deleted after prolonged inactivity are different cases.
Yahoo’s current Help documentation says an inactive mailbox can lose its messages, folders, contacts, and settings after 12 months or more without mailbox use. Signing in afterward may reactivate the email account, but it does not restore the deleted mailbox contents. Yahoo also lists failure to sign in within the last 24 months as a possible reason for broader account deletion.
What happens to an old Yahoo Mail account?
| Situation | Likely result |
|---|---|
| You forgot the password but still control a recovery phone or email | You can normally reset the password through Yahoo’s Sign-in Helper. |
| You have not used the mailbox for 12 months or more | Yahoo may have deleted the mailbox’s messages, folders, contacts, and settings. The email account itself may still be recoverable. |
| You voluntarily closed the account recently | You may reactivate it by signing in within the applicable hold period: usually 30 days, with longer periods in some regions. |
| Yahoo no longer recognizes the address or recovery information | The account may have been permanently deleted, or Yahoo may be unable to verify that you own it. |
| You have not signed in for 24 months | Yahoo lists this as a possible reason the broader account may be deleted and become inaccessible. |
Do not rely on the old claim that Yahoo deletes accounts after four months of inactivity. Yahoo’s current documentation describes inactive-mailbox handling at 12 months or more and separately mentions 24 months without signing in as a possible account-deletion reason.
Recover an old Yahoo account with Sign-in Helper
If you cannot sign in, start with Yahoo’s official Sign-in Helper. Yahoo’s documented recovery methods are a recovery mobile number or an alternate email address.

- Open Yahoo’s Sign-in Helper.
- Enter the old Yahoo email address, recovery email address, or recovery phone number.
- Follow the prompts to locate the Yahoo ID or reset the password.
- Choose the available recovery option. Yahoo may show a masked phone number or email address.
- Enter the verification code sent by text or email.
- Create a new password when Yahoo offers that option.
If you do not remember the Yahoo address, enter the recovery phone number or alternate email address associated with it. This is the normal way to locate an old Yahoo ID; there is no supported command-line recovery procedure.
Reset the password from the Yahoo sign-in page
You can also begin at Yahoo Mail’s sign-in page:
- Select Sign in.
- Enter the Yahoo email address and select Next.
- If the account can be recovered, look for Select an option.
- Choose the recovery method labeled Text or Email.
- Enter the verification code.
- Select Continue to change the password.
- Select Continue again and finish the account prompts.
Yahoo may ask you to review your recovery settings. Select the pencil icon to edit them, choose Add email or mobile no to add a method, or select Looks good to continue.
What if the account was deleted because it was inactive?
Try signing in even if the account has been unused for a long time. Yahoo says that signing in to an inactive mailbox can recover or reactivate the email account. However, this is not a mailbox-content recovery process.
After inactivity-related cleanup, the original:
- Messages
- Folders
- Contacts
- Account settings
may have been permanently deleted. Yahoo states that deleted mailbox content cannot be restored. Therefore, successfully changing the password does not mean your old Inbox or sent mail will reappear.
This distinction matters if you need an old message for evidence, a contact list, or an attachment. Check any previously configured mail app, downloaded mail archive, local backup, or forwarding destination. Yahoo cannot restore mailbox data that its policy says was permanently deleted.

Reactivate a Yahoo account you voluntarily closed
A voluntarily closed account follows a different rule from inactivity deletion. Yahoo says you can reactivate a closed account by signing in within the applicable reactivation period:
| Account registration region | Reactivation period |
|---|---|
| Most regions | 30 days |
| Australia or New Zealand | 90 days |
| Brazil, Hong Kong, Taiwan, or India | 180 days |
To try:
- Open Yahoo’s sign-in page.
- Enter the closed account’s Yahoo ID and password.
- Verify the recovery information when prompted.
- Create a new password or select Continue, depending on the screen Yahoo displays.
The 30-day, 90-day, and 180-day periods apply to an account that you voluntarily closed. They do not mean Yahoo preserves an inactive mailbox for 30 days after the 12-month inactivity threshold.
What “Sorry, we don’t recognize that email address or phone number” means
If Sign-in Helper displays “Sorry, we don’t recognize that email address or phone number,” check for typing errors first. Try the full Yahoo address, the recovery phone number with the correct country code, and every alternate email address you may have used.
Recommended Free Tools
If the same message continues, Yahoo’s published recovery guidance treats the account as potentially permanently deleted or not identifiable through the information submitted. Recovery may not be possible if:
- The account was deleted and is no longer available.
- The recovery phone number was disconnected.
- You no longer have access to the recovery email.
- The submitted recovery information belongs to a different Yahoo account.
- You cannot pass Yahoo’s ownership verification.
Yahoo also says an old Yahoo ID that has been removed and is inaccessible will not become available for reuse when creating a new account. Creating a new account with a similar address will not recover the old mailbox.
Fix a Yahoo sign-in loop
Sometimes the account is valid, but the sign-in page repeatedly reloads after you select Sign in. Yahoo recommends this sequence:
- Select Not you? on the sign-in screen.
- Re-enter the Yahoo ID and password.
- Select Sign in again.
If the loop remains, clear the browser’s Yahoo cookies, close and restart the browser, and retry. You can also try another supported browser or a different Yahoo sign-in page. Avoid repeatedly submitting passwords in a loop; first remove the browser-session problem so you do not confuse a sign-in error with an account-recovery failure.

Once the account is accessible, protect it before leaving it unused again:
- Open the Yahoo Account Security page.
- Find Ways of signing in.
- Select Add email or Add phone number.
- If a recovery method is already listed, select Phone numbers or Additional emails.
- Select Add phone number or Add email, then complete verification.
Yahoo allows up to 10 recovery email addresses. The limit includes addresses currently listed and addresses that were recently removed. Use a phone number and an email address that you can actually access, and remove obsolete recovery details when appropriate.
How to prevent another inactive-mailbox problem
Sign in periodically if you want to keep the mailbox active. If you use the address through a mail app, do not assume that a device silently checking mail will always satisfy every account-activity rule; periodically open Yahoo Mail in a browser as well.

Yahoo also references an inactivity-protection option through Yahoo Mail Plus and an Access + Forwarding feature. These options are not available in every locale. If the relevant option does not appear in your account, Yahoo says it is unavailable at that time.

Can I recover an old Yahoo Mail account after years of inactivity?
Possibly. Try Yahoo’s Sign-in Helper using the account’s recovery phone number or alternate email address. Yahoo may reactivate the account, but messages, folders, contacts, and settings deleted after 12 months or more of inactivity cannot be restored.
Does Yahoo delete an account after four months?
That is not Yahoo’s current documented inactivity rule. Yahoo currently describes inactive-mailbox handling after 12 months or more without mailbox use and separately lists 24 months without signing in as a possible reason for broader account deletion.
Will signing in restore my old Yahoo emails?
No. Signing in may recover the email account, but Yahoo says deleted mailbox messages, folders, contacts, and settings cannot be restored.

How long do I have to reactivate a Yahoo account I closed myself?
Usually 30 days. Yahoo lists 90 days for accounts registered in Australia or New Zealand and 180 days for accounts registered in Brazil, Hong Kong, Taiwan, or India.
Can Yahoo recover my account without my old phone number or recovery email?
Yahoo’s documented recovery methods require a recovery phone number or email. If Sign-in Helper cannot verify your identity because those methods are unavailable or incorrect, Yahoo says the account may not be recoverable.
Can I recreate the same old Yahoo email address?
Yahoo states that an old Yahoo ID from a removed and inaccessible account will not be available for reuse when creating a new account.
The Bottom Line
Use Yahoo’s Sign-in Helper first, with the recovery phone number or alternate email address. If Yahoo verifies you, you may regain access to the account. But if inactivity already caused Yahoo to delete the mailbox data, the old emails, folders, contacts, and settings are gone permanently. A recently user-closed account is a separate case and may be reactivated within 30, 90, or 180 days depending on the registration region.
