Microsoft’s former Android-app solution was Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) with Amazon Appstore, not Google Play Store. Microsoft says WSA and Amazon Appstore have not been available in the Microsoft Store since March 5, 2025, so new installations cannot use that former supported route.
If you need an Android app on a PC, check for its official website or Windows app, use it on an Android phone, or consider a third-party Android emulator. These options do not install Google Play Store as a Microsoft-supported Windows feature.
Can you install Google Play Store on Windows 11?
Not through a Microsoft-supported installation method. Microsoft’s former Android-app platform offered a curated catalogue from Amazon Appstore and required an Amazon account to download apps. Microsoft did not provide Google Play Store, Google Play Services, a Google-account sign-in path, or an official PowerShell, Command Prompt, or winget command to install Play Store.
Microsoft’s documentation says WSA and Amazon Appstore have not been available in the Microsoft Store since March 5, 2025. The documented Microsoft Store installation path is no longer available for new installations.

What about Windows 10?
Microsoft’s Android-app documentation applied to Windows 11 and did not provide a Windows 10 installation route for WSA or Amazon Appstore. Windows 10 therefore has no Microsoft-supported WSA or Google Play Store installation path.

Why old WSA and Play Store guides no longer work
Older guides commonly instructed readers to install WSA and Amazon Appstore, then modify WSA to add Google Play Store. The first part described Microsoft’s former Windows 11 Android-app environment, but Microsoft Store distribution ended on March 5, 2025. Adding Google Play Store to a modified WSA package was not Microsoft’s supported procedure.
Modified packages and scripts from third parties can create security, update, compatibility, and account risks. Do not treat a download advertised as “Google Play Store for Windows” as an official Microsoft utility.
Practical ways to use Android apps on a Windows PC
1. Use the app’s website or Windows version
Check whether the service offers a web app or native Windows application. Visit the service’s official website or search the Microsoft Store for an app published by the developer. This avoids relying on an Android environment for apps that have a Windows or browser version.

A third-party Android emulator can provide an Android-like environment on Windows. The emulator supplies that environment; it is not a Microsoft Play Store installation method. Before installing one, check the publisher and download domain, whether Google Play is included or a separate app catalogue is used, and any stated hardware-virtualization requirements. Avoid random APK bundles advertised as official Play Store downloads.

3. Run the app on an Android phone
If you have an Android phone, using the app directly on the phone is often the most straightforward option. Some phone-integration features can make phone apps and other phone content accessible from a PC, depending on the phone model and Windows configuration. The app continues to run on the phone; this does not install Google Play Store on Windows.
If WSA is already installed on an older Windows 11 PC
Some PCs that used WSA before March 5, 2025 may still have its components installed. This is a legacy setup, not a way to obtain WSA on a new PC. Microsoft’s former settings location was:

- Search for and open Windows Subsystem for Android™ Settings.
- Select Shutdown Subsystem.
- Open a mobile app to restart the subsystem.
These steps apply only if the legacy components are already installed. They do not install Google Play Store or convert WSA into a Microsoft-supported Google Play environment.
Former WSA requirements and troubleshooting
Microsoft’s former WSA requirements included:
- Windows 11
- An x64 or ARM64 processor
- Virtual Machine Platform enabled
- 16 GB RAM recommended
- An SSD recommended
These requirements are relevant only to understanding an old WSA installation. Enabling Virtual Machine Platform does not install Google Play Store.

App will not install
Microsoft’s former first troubleshooting step was to open WSA Settings, select Shutdown Subsystem, and try opening the mobile app again.
App will not launch
Microsoft advised checking that Control flow guard (CFG) was set to Use default (On) at:
Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > App & browser control > Exploit protection settings > System settings > Control flow guard (CFG)
Do not disable CFG just to follow an unverified Play Store guide.
App crashes
The former force-close path was:
Start > Settings > Apps & features > [app] > More > Advanced options > Terminate

Then reopen the app. This applies to a legacy mobile app installation, not Google Play Store on a normal Windows installation.

Network access fails
For a legacy WSA installation, Microsoft identified Advanced networking as a relevant setting. If it was turned off, the documented firewall area was:
Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > App & browser control > Firewall & network protection > [active network]
Under Incoming connections, Block all incoming connections should not be selected. Do not turn off the firewall globally to make an unofficial package work.

Uninstalling WSA also removed Amazon Appstore and installed mobile apps. Uninstalling Amazon Appstore likewise removed WSA and its installed mobile apps. Menu labels may differ between Windows builds; remove the subsystem through Windows’ installed-apps list rather than deleting its folders manually.
What not to do
- Do not assume an installer labelled “Google Play Store for Windows 10/11” is an official Microsoft utility.
- Do not enter your Google password into an unknown script, emulator, or modified system image.
- Do not assume an APK is safe because its filename contains “Play Store.”
- Do not disable Windows security features just to complete an unverified tutorial.
- Do not rely on a region change to obtain Google Play Store. Microsoft’s former region requirements applied to Amazon Appstore, not Google Play Store.
Microsoft’s supported-region information was specifically for Amazon Appstore on Windows, not Google Play Store. Its listed regions included the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, and Ireland.

Is there a Google Play Store app for Windows 11?
