You can shut down Windows 10 or Windows 11 without touching the mouse. The most convenient method depends on whether you want a normal shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or a command that runs immediately.
These five methods use built-in Windows features. The important distinction is that Sleep is not a supported option in shutdown.exe; menu-based methods are the reliable way to select Sleep from the keyboard.

1. Use Alt + F4 from the desktop
Microsoft documents Alt + F4 as the shortcut for closing the active window. When no window has focus and the desktop is active, it opens the Windows shutdown dialog instead.
- Press
Windows + Dto show the desktop. - Press
Alt + F4. - In the power-action selector, use the Up Arrow or Down Arrow to choose Shut down, Sleep, Restart, or another available action.

Enter.
This is not an unconditional shutdown shortcut. If an application window still has focus, Alt + F4 closes that application instead of opening the shutdown dialog. Pressing Windows + D first avoids that common mistake.

What if Alt + F4 closes a program?
That means the desktop was not active. Press Windows + D again, then press Alt + F4. If the application has unsaved work, Windows may display a save prompt before it closes.
2. Use Windows + X and the Shut down or sign out menu
The Windows + X shortcut opens the Quick Link menu—the same menu that appears when you right-click the Start button.

Windows + X. - Open Shut down or sign out. You can select it with the arrow keys and press
Enter, or use the menu’s displayed accelerator key if one is shown. - Choose Shut down, Sleep, Hibernate, Restart, or Sign out.
The exact choices depend on your PC. Hibernate, in particular, may not be available on systems that do not support it or that use InstantGo. Hardware, firmware, power settings, and administrator policies can also affect which power commands appear.
This method is useful when several windows are open because it does not require you to close or minimize them first.

Ctrl + Alt + Delete opens the Windows security screen. It is not a one-key shutdown command, but it provides access to the Power menu even when the normal desktop is difficult to use.

Enterto open the power menu. - Select Shut down, Sleep, or Restart, then press
Enter.
The security screen also includes options such as Lock, Switch user, Sign out, and Task Manager. It can be a practical fallback when an application is frozen but Windows still responds to system shortcuts.

On a work or school computer, the Power button or its commands may be missing. Administrators can enable a policy named Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate commands.
4. Run shutdown.exe from Windows + R
For a direct command, open the Run dialog and execute Windows’ built-in shutdown.exe utility.

Windows + R. - Enter the command you need.
- Press
Enter.
For an immediate normal shutdown, use:
shutdown.exe /s /t 0
The /s option shuts down the computer, while /t 0 sets the timeout to zero seconds.

Do not add /f unless you specifically want to force programs closed. It can discard unsaved documents and other unsaved data.
To test the cancellation command, schedule a delay first—for example:
shutdown.exe /s /t 60
Then open a new Run dialog or Command Prompt during the 60-second countdown and run:

shutdown.exe /a
/a must be run as a separate command during the timeout period.
Can shutdown.exe put Windows to Sleep?
No. Microsoft documents /s for shutdown, /r for restart, and /h for Hibernate, but there is no documented /sleep option. The frequently suggested command shutdown /sleep is invalid.
Also avoid treating rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0 as a dependable Sleep command. Depending on hibernation and power settings, it may hibernate or behave differently from the intended Sleep action.
5. Create a shutdown shortcut and assign a keyboard shortcut
You can create a desktop shortcut that runs the shutdown command, then assign a keyboard combination to it. This gives you a reusable custom shortcut instead of typing the command each time.

- Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select New > Shortcut.
- In the location field, enter:
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0 - Select Next.
- Enter a name such as Shut down Windows, then select Finish.
- Right-click the new shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, click the Shortcut key field.
- Press the key combination you want to assign. Windows will add
Ctrl + Altto the selected key—for example, pressingScreatesCtrl + Alt + S. - Select Apply, then OK.
The shortcut must remain on the desktop or in a Start-menu location for the assigned key combination to work. Do not delete it after assigning the shortcut key.
The target must include both the executable and its parameters. This is valid: C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0

Creating a similar shortcut with shutdown.exe /h gives you Hibernate, not Sleep. For Sleep, use one of the menu-based methods above or configure the physical power button or laptop lid to trigger Sleep.
How to configure the power button or laptop lid for Sleep
If you want a physical button or lid close to act as a Sleep shortcut, change its power plan action:

- Go to System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what the power buttons do.
- Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Set When I press the power button or When I close the lid to Sleep.
- Select Save changes.
On Windows 10, you can also reach the power settings through Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings. The available options vary between desktop PCs and laptops.
Sleep, Hibernate, and Shut down: which should you choose?

Windows saves your session when entering Sleep and will shut down if the battery becomes critically low. After waking from Sleep or Hibernate, a monitor, printer, or scanner may not reconnect correctly. Reconnect the device, restart the PC, and check for current drivers if that happens.

Sleep and Hibernate can be unavailable because of hardware capability, firmware, power-plan settings, or device-management policy. Hibernate is not supported on every PC, and a managed computer may have power commands deliberately removed.
If you only need to shut down, Windows + R followed by shutdown.exe /s /t 0 is generally the most predictable command-based option.

These shortcuts continue to work on Windows 10 after its support end date of October 14, 2025. Windows 10 still runs, and its shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, and keyboard mechanisms are not disabled; however, Microsoft no longer provides normal free security fixes, software updates, or technical support for the operating system.

What is the fastest keyboard shortcut to shut down Windows?
Press Windows + D, then Alt + F4. Select Shut down in the dialog and press Enter. For an immediate command without a dialog, press Windows + R, enter shutdown.exe /s /t 0, and press Enter.
Does Alt + F4 always shut down Windows?
No. If an application has focus, Alt + F4 closes that application. Show the desktop with Windows + D first to open the shutdown dialog.
What is the keyboard shortcut for Sleep in Windows 10 or 11?
There is no universal dedicated Sleep key combination documented for every Windows PC. Use Windows + D, Alt + F4, and select Sleep, or use Windows + X and open Shut down or sign out > Sleep.
Does shutdown.exe /h mean Sleep?
No. shutdown.exe /h means Hibernate. Sleep and Hibernate are different power states.
How do I cancel a shutdown countdown?
Open a new Run dialog or Command Prompt while the countdown is active and run shutdown.exe /a. This only works during the pending timeout period.
Why is the Power option missing from Ctrl + Alt + Delete?
A Windows administrator policy may have removed Shut down, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate commands. Hardware, edition, and local power configuration can also affect which options appear.
