Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere are three ways to connect Teams and SharePoint: create a Team from a qualifying SharePoint team site, add SharePoint content as a tab in an existing Teams channel, or create a channel that uses SharePoint for file storage. A tab does not move content or grant permissions; standard channels use folders in the Team’s SharePoint site, while private and shared channels have separate SharePoint sites.
Choose the integration you actually need
| What you want | Use this method | Where files are stored |
|---|---|---|
| Turn an existing SharePoint team site into a Team | Use Add real-time chat in SharePoint | The existing team site |
| Show SharePoint content in an existing channel | Add a SharePoint tab in Teams | The original SharePoint site |
| Create a channel for ordinary team collaboration | Create a standard channel | A channel folder in the Team’s default document library |
| Restrict a channel to a subset of Team members | Create a private channel | A separate private-channel SharePoint site |
| Collaborate with people outside the Team without adding them to the Team | Create a shared channel | A separate shared-channel SharePoint site |
Adding a SharePoint tab does not move content, merge sites, or grant access. It creates a convenient link inside Teams.
Method 1: Create a Team from an existing SharePoint site
Use this method when the SharePoint site is the starting point and you want to give the group a Teams workspace.
Requirements
Before looking for the button, verify all three conditions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
#1 Best Overall
- The site is a SharePoint team site, not a communication site.
- The site is connected to a Microsoft 365 group.
- You are a site owner.
Microsoft rolls out some SharePoint and Teams features gradually, so labels may differ and the option may not appear for every tenant.
Steps
- Open the group-connected SharePoint team site.
- On the site home page, select Add real-time chat in the lower-left corner.
- If the button is not visible, open the Next Steps panel near the upper-right of the site and select Add real-time chat.
- In the panel, select Add Microsoft Teams.
- Select Continue.
- Choose the SharePoint pages, news posts, lists, and document libraries that should appear in Teams.
- Select Add Teams.
Teams opens the new Team and takes you to its General channel. The selected SharePoint resources appear as tabs there.
What Microsoft creates automatically
- The site’s default document library is preselected and cannot be removed. It is available through the channel’s Files tab.
- The SharePoint home page is initially selected, but you can clear it.
- Selected pages, news posts, lists, and libraries become tabs in the General channel.
- A link to the Teams channel is added to the SharePoint site navigation.
The content remains SharePoint content. Changes made through Teams are still made in SharePoint; the content is not converted into native Teams content.
If “Add real-time chat” is missing
Check the following in order:
- Confirm that the site is a team site, not a communication site.
- Check that the site is connected to a Microsoft 365 group.
- Confirm that your account is a site owner, rather than only a site member.
- Check whether the Microsoft 365 group already has a Team.
If the group already has a Team, Microsoft does not create a second Team through this workflow. You can add the existing Team to the SharePoint site’s navigation instead.

Use this method when the Team and channel already exist but members need quick access to information stored on SharePoint. You must be the owner of the SharePoint site containing the content. Each page, news post, list, or document library is added as its own tab.
Add a SharePoint page or news post
- In Teams, open the target channel.
- Select the + button on the channel’s tab bar, to the right of the channel name.
- Select SharePoint.
- Select Pages.
- Select the page or news post.
- Optionally select Post to the channel about this tab.
- Select Save.
Add a SharePoint list
- Open the target Teams channel.
- Select + on the tab bar.
- Select SharePoint, then Lists.
- Select the list.
- Optionally enable Post to the channel about this tab.
- Select Save.
Add a SharePoint document library
- Open the target channel and select +.
- Select SharePoint.
- Select Document libraries.
- Select the library. Some libraries may also appear under Recommended.
- Optionally select Post to the channel about this tab.
- Select Save.
Add content from another SharePoint site
- Open the target channel and select +.
- Select SharePoint.
- Select the Any SharePoint site radio button.
- Paste the URL of the SharePoint page, news post, or list.
- Optionally select Post to the channel about this tab.
- Select Save.
SharePoint validates the URL and checks whether you can access the content. Adding the tab does not change permissions on the page, list, or library. A channel member who lacks permission sees an access-request page rather than receiving automatic access.
Method 3: Create a channel that uses SharePoint storage
Every Teams channel has a file location in SharePoint, but not every channel has a separate SharePoint site.
Standard channels use the parent Team site
When you create a standard channel, its files are stored in a folder in the default document library of the Team’s parent SharePoint site. All standard channels in the Team use that same parent site.
- In Teams, find the Team.
- Select the … menu next to the Team name.
- Select Add channel.
- Enter the channel name and configure its privacy as Standard.
- Create the channel.
The channel’s Files tab represents its folder in the Team’s default SharePoint document library. It is not a separate SharePoint site.
To open that location directly, open the channel’s Files tab and select Open in SharePoint. In the SharePoint library, channel folders are also shown in the In channels section. Hover over a channel folder and select the Teams icon to return to the channel.
Do not rely on creating a channel with the same name as an existing SharePoint folder. Microsoft’s documentation does not describe name matching as a supported way to link a channel to a pre-existing folder.
Private channels create separate SharePoint sites
A private channel provisions its own SharePoint channel site and default document library. Only private-channel owners and members can access that site.

Channel membership is managed in Teams. SharePoint displays the channel-site permissions in read-only form, and the site’s membership groups synchronize with the private channel. Do not treat the channel site as an independently managed SharePoint site.
Shared channels create separate SharePoint sites
A shared channel provisions a separate SharePoint site using the TEAMCHANNEL#1 template. The site is created in the same geographic region as the parent Team site.
Only shared-channel owners and members automatically have access. Ordinary members of the parent Team, and Team owners who are not channel members, do not automatically see the shared channel’s files. Permissions are controlled through Teams membership rather than independently in SharePoint.
Guests cannot be added to shared channels. External participants use Microsoft Entra B2B Direct Connect instead. Guests can participate in standard and private channels where organizational policies allow it.

A tab does not grant permission
If you add a library from another SharePoint site as a tab, Teams does not add the Team or channel members to that library. Give the required users access on the underlying SharePoint content, or they will receive an access-request page.
Channel permissions may be read-only in SharePoint
For private and shared channels, manage membership in Teams. The connected SharePoint site reflects that membership and is not intended for separate permission administration.
Rank #4
Direct file access can outlive channel membership
A person who received direct access to a file, folder, or notebook through SharePoint may retain that access after being removed from the Team or channel. Removing channel membership does not necessarily remove separately granted item permissions. Review direct permissions when someone must be fully blocked from the content.
Shared-channel owners need a backup
A shared channel can become ownerless if its last owner leaves the organization and no eligible organizational member can be promoted. Assign more than one owner to important shared channels.
If a shared-channel site is deleted outside Teams while the channel remains active, Teams restores it automatically within four hours. If the site is permanently deleted, Teams provisions a new site for the channel.

For automation, use the channel files-root endpoint rather than constructing a library URL or guessing a folder name:
GET /teams/{teamId}/channels/{channelId}/filesFolder
The response includes:
- parentReference.driveId: the SharePoint drive ID containing the channel files.
- itemId: the ID of the channel’s root folder.
Store and reuse those returned IDs. Standard channels normally return the Team site’s drive; private and shared channels return drives belonging to their separate channel sites. This avoids relying on library names, site URLs, or channel folder paths.

Recommended setup pattern
- Keep shared, broadly accessible documents in the Team’s standard-channel storage.
- Use a SharePoint tab when the content already exists elsewhere and should remain managed in its original site.
- Use a private channel only when its files and conversations need a restricted membership.
- Use a shared channel for scoped collaboration with people who should not become members of the parent Team.
- Document direct SharePoint permissions, especially for sensitive libraries and files.
- Give important private and shared channels at least two owners.
There is no documented supported operation to attach an arbitrary existing SharePoint folder to a channel. Decide whether you need a tab pointing to existing content, a standard-channel folder in the Team site, or a separately secured private or shared channel site.
FAQ
Can I add a Teams channel directly to any SharePoint site?
No. Creating a Team from SharePoint requires a group-connected SharePoint team site and site-owner permissions. Communication sites are not supported for that workflow.
Does every Teams channel get its own SharePoint site?
No. Standard channels use folders in the Team’s parent SharePoint site. Private and shared channels each provision a separate SharePoint channel site.
Does adding a SharePoint tab give all Team members access?
No. A tab only exposes the content in Teams. Its existing SharePoint permissions remain unchanged, so users without access see an access-request page.
Where are files for a standard Teams channel stored?
They are stored in that channel’s folder inside the default document library of the Team’s parent SharePoint site.
Can I link a channel to an existing SharePoint folder by giving them the same name?
This is not documented as a supported linking method. Teams uses its standard-channel folder structure in the Team’s default library.
Where do I manage private- and shared-channel SharePoint permissions?
Manage membership in Teams. The connected channel-site permissions are synchronized from channel membership and appear read-only in SharePoint.
The Bottom Line
The right integration depends on what you mean by “add.” Use Add real-time chat to create a Team from a qualifying SharePoint team site, add a SharePoint tab to display existing content in an established channel, or create a standard, private, or shared channel to let Teams provision the appropriate SharePoint storage. Treat tabs as links, not permission changes, and remember that only private and shared channels receive separate SharePoint sites.
