It is still available in Windows 11, even though Microsoft now places most audio controls in the Settings app.
Use this dialog when you need the older Playback, Recording, Sounds, or Communications tabs; endpoint properties such as microphone levels; or device-specific controls that are not visible in the modern Sound page.
What is mmsys.cpl?
mmsys.cpl is a Windows .cpl Control Panel applet. The mmsys name refers to Multimedia System settings, while the .cpl extension identifies a Control Panel module.
It is not an MMC snap-in. Therefore, mmc mmsys.cpl is the wrong command. MMC is designed for console files such as .msc; the Sound applet should be launched directly, with control, or through the Windows shell.

#1 Best Overall
- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
When opened, the applet normally displays four tabs:
| Tab | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Playback | Output devices such as speakers, headphones, HDMI audio, and USB headsets. |
| Recording | Input devices such as microphones and line-in hardware. |
| Sounds | Sounds assigned to Windows events. |
| Communications | How Windows adjusts audio when it detects communications activity. |
Open the classic Sound Control Panel in Windows 11
Method 1: Use the Run command
This is usually the fastest and most reliable method:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
mmsys.cpl. - Select OK or press Enter.
The classic Sound dialog should open immediately.
Method 2: Use Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt
Open Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt and run:
mmsys.cpl
You can also use the explicit Control Panel form:
control mmsys.cpl
Microsoft also documents this legacy form:
control mmsys.cpl sounds
The sounds argument belongs to the older applet interface. It does not open Windows 11’s modern Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer page.
Recommended Free Tools
Method 3: Use Windows 11 Settings
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Sound.
- Scroll down and select More sound settings.
This opens the same classic Sound dialog in a separate window. The link is currently called More sound settings; instructions that call it Advanced sound options are referring to a different or older interface.
Method 4: Use Control Panel
- Open Control Panel.
- Set View by: to Large icons or Small icons.
- Select Sound.
In Category view, the Sound applet may be hidden inside a category or may not be immediately obvious. Switching to an icon view makes it easier to find.

Playback: manage output devices
The Playback tab lists audio rendering endpoints. Depending on the computer, these may include built-in speakers, wired headphones, HDMI or DisplayPort audio, Bluetooth headsets, and USB audio devices.
Select a device and choose Properties to view the pages provided for that device and its driver. Common controls may include levels, supported formats, enhancements, spatial sound, and endpoint information. The exact tabs are not identical on every PC.
Use the playback list when Windows is sending sound to the wrong output. Select the intended device and use the available option to make it the default playback device, if necessary.
Recording: adjust microphones and inputs
The Recording tab lists capture endpoints such as the built-in microphone, a headset microphone, a USB microphone, or a line-in input.

To adjust a microphone’s level:
- Open the Recording tab.
- Select the microphone.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Levels tab.
- Adjust the microphone level and, where available, microphone boost.
- Select Apply, then OK.
If the microphone is missing entirely, changing its level here will not help. Windows must first detect and expose the device through its audio driver.
Sounds: change Windows event sounds
The Sounds tab assigns audio files to events such as notifications and system alerts.
- Open the Sounds tab.
- Under Program Events, select an event.
- Use the Sounds drop-down list to choose a sound.
- Select Test to preview it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
You can also choose a different sound scheme or disable sounds for a particular event by selecting the appropriate option in the sound list.
Communications: control automatic volume reduction
The Communications tab contains the classic behavior settings Windows uses when it detects communications activity. These settings are separate from Windows 11’s per-application controls in Volume mixer.

If other audio becomes unexpectedly quieter during a call, this is one of the first places to check. The available choices determine whether Windows reduces other sounds, mutes them, or takes no action.
Rename a playback device
You can give a playback endpoint a more useful name, such as Desk speakers or Monitor HDMI:

- Supports 3D post tonal sound and virtual 5.1 CH sound track.
- No driver required, Plug and Play.
- Instantly creates microphone in and audio out jack from any PC USB port.
- Open
mmsys.cpl. - Select the Playback tab.
- Select the device and choose Properties.
- Remain on the General tab.
- Edit the friendly-name text box.
- Select OK.
This changes the stored name for that audio endpoint. It does not rename every endpoint that uses the same underlying pin category. Also, software that queries the driver directly may continue to display the driver-supplied name instead.
mmsys.cpl versus Windows 11 Sound settings
| Task | Use |
|---|---|
| Choose a general output device | Settings > System > Sound |
| Open the old Playback and Recording tabs | mmsys.cpl or More sound settings |
| Change per-application volume and output routing | Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer |
| Adjust a microphone’s classic level controls | Recording > Properties > Levels in mmsys.cpl |
| Assign sounds to Windows events | Sounds tab in mmsys.cpl |
In particular, mmsys.cpl does not open Volume mixer. For that modern destination, Windows supports the Settings URI ms-settings:apps-volume, which can be entered in the Run dialog.
Alternative launch syntax
Windows also supports the general Control Panel launcher syntax:
rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL mmsys.cpl
This is useful in scripts or shortcuts, although mmsys.cpl and control mmsys.cpl are simpler for normal use.
Common problems with mmsys.cpl
Search opens Sound settings instead
Windows Search often prioritizes the modern result labeled Sound settings or System settings. That is not necessarily the classic applet. Use More sound settings from the Sound page, or bypass Search with mmsys.cpl.
More sound settings does nothing
A temporary Settings-app problem can prevent the link from opening the dialog. Close and reopen Settings, then try again. Running mmsys.cpl from Run bypasses that navigation path.

A device is missing
The applet only shows endpoints exposed by the Windows audio subsystem. A missing device may be disconnected, disabled, undetected, or unavailable because of a driver problem. Check the physical connection and the device’s driver before changing Sound Properties.
A tab or property page is missing
Device property pages are hardware- and driver-dependent. A USB headset, HDMI output, laptop microphone, and third-party audio device can expose different controls. The absence of a particular tab does not necessarily indicate a Windows error.
The applet is blocked
On a managed computer, an administrator may hide the Sound Control Panel item or restrict access to Settings. In that case, the command may fail or the applet may be inaccessible even when the file exists.

mmsys.cpl remains the quickest route to Windows’ classic Sound Control Panel. Run it directly when you need the Playback, Recording, Sounds, or Communications tabs, detailed endpoint properties, or microphone level controls. Use Windows 11’s modern Sound settings instead for per-application volume and current device-routing controls.
