The standard installation does not require Command Prompt or PowerShell: download the installation file, run it, approve the Windows prompts, and wait for Chrome to install.
Check your PC’s processor type before downloading. Google lists Windows 10 and later for supported Intel processors, while Windows PCs with ARM processors require Windows 11 or later.
Chrome requirements for Windows 10 and Windows 11
| Windows PC | Current Chrome requirement |
|---|---|
| Intel processor | Windows 10 or later, with an Intel Pentium 4 or later processor that supports SSE3 |
| ARM processor | Windows 11 or later |
Windows 10 is still listed as compatible with Chrome. Google’s current enterprise requirements page shows Chrome deprecation for Windows 10 as “Not yet scheduled.” That is separate from Microsoft’s Windows 10 deprecation date, which Google lists as October 2025.
If your computer runs Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1, the current Chrome installer is not a supported target. Chrome 109, released on January 10, 2023, was the last Chrome version supporting those Windows releases.

How to download and install Chrome on Windows
- Open your current browser, such as Microsoft Edge.
- Go to Google’s Chrome download page.
- Select Download Chrome.
- Save the installation file when your browser asks where to save it. It will normally be in your Downloads folder.
- Open the downloaded installation file. You can usually find it by opening File Explorer and selecting Downloads.
- If Windows displays “Do you want to run this file?”, select Run.
- If User Account Control displays “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”, select Yes.
- Wait while the installer downloads any remaining files and completes the installation.
On Windows 10 and later, a Chrome window opens automatically when installation finishes. You can sign in with a Google Account, import bookmarks from another browser, or continue without signing in.
Do you need Command Prompt or PowerShell?
No. Google’s standard Windows installation procedure uses the downloaded installer and on-screen prompts. You do not need to enter a command in Command Prompt or PowerShell to install Chrome.
Be cautious with websites that provide unofficial “Chrome commands” or modified installers. Use Google’s Chrome download page, particularly if a download asks you to disable security features or install additional software.
What to do if Chrome will not download or install
Use the offline installer
If the regular installer fails, repeatedly downloads the same file, or cannot connect to Google’s download service, use Google’s installer for a different computer. You can download it on another computer and move it to the target PC.
- Open Google’s Chrome download page.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page.
- Under Chrome Family, select Other Platforms.
- Select the operating system of the computer where Chrome will be installed.
- Download the installer.
- Move the downloaded file to the target Windows computer using a USB drive, network folder, or another permitted method.
- Run the installer on the target computer.
If the installation file may be corrupted, download it again and run the new copy. Google recommends trying the offline installer if downloading the file again does not fix the problem.

Check free space on the system drive
Error 0x80070070 means the system disk is full, usually the C: drive. Free space on another drive may not solve the problem if Windows and the installer need space on C:.
To check storage, open Settings → System → Storage. Remove temporary files or uninstall software you no longer need, then run the Chrome installer again.
Check Windows S mode
Windows in S mode blocks applications installed from outside the Microsoft Store. This prevents the normal Chrome installer from running.

Switching out of S mode is free, but cannot be undone on Windows 10 or Windows 11. If you need to keep S mode, you cannot install Chrome from Google’s website.
Allow the installer through Windows Firewall
Firewall software can block Chrome’s installer or its connection to Google’s download servers. To check the Windows Firewall app list:

- Usage Note: Not intended for all configurations such as system boot drives or certain embedded systems; compatibility may vary by device

- In Find a setting, enter Firewall.
- Select Allow an app through Windows Firewall.
- Select Change settings.
- Select Allow another app.
- Select Browse.
In the Browse dialog, enter %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Google\GoogleUpdater. Open the folder with the highest-numbered name, select updater.exe, and select Add. Only change firewall settings if you understand your organization’s security policy. On a work or school computer, contact the administrator instead.
Temporarily check antivirus interference
Some antivirus programs prevent Chrome from installing. Google’s troubleshooting sequence is to temporarily turn off the antivirus, download Chrome again, install it, and then turn the antivirus back on immediately.
Do not leave antivirus protection disabled while browsing or downloading other files. If Chrome installs only when the antivirus is disabled, update the antivirus software or ask its vendor or your administrator how to create an appropriate exception.
Review proxy restrictions
Corporate and school networks may use a proxy that interferes with the installer. Google lists proxies using Negotiate authentication, including Kerberos and NTLM, as supported scenarios. Integrated-authentication proxies can also work when the user is authorized.
If the installer fails only on a managed network, the problem may not be your Windows installation. Ask the network administrator whether the proxy allows Chrome’s installer and Google’s update services.

Chrome installation errors and their meanings
| Error or message | Meaning or next step |
|---|---|
| Error 4 | A newer version of Chrome is already present on the computer. |
| Errors 7, 12, 13, 35, 57, 102, and 103 | Google categorizes these as installation failures for unknown reasons. Download the installer again, try the offline installer, and check security or network restrictions. |
| Error 31 | Chrome could not be reinstalled. |
| Error 0x80070070 | The system disk is full, normally the C: drive. |
| OS not supported | The installer does not support the installed Windows version. Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 are no longer current Chrome targets. |
Chrome is already installed for all users
If Chrome was previously installed for every user on the PC, a new installer may say that Chrome is already present and open the existing installation. That is normal behavior; it does not necessarily mean the download failed.
To install a different Chrome version, Google recommends uninstalling the current Chrome app first and then downloading and installing the desired version. In Windows, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find Google Chrome, select the three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall. Follow any prompts, then download Chrome again from Google.
Uninstalling Chrome can remove locally stored browser data if you select an option to delete it. If you use Chrome Sync, confirm that bookmarks and other data are synchronized before removing the existing installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need administrator access?
Google documents a separate failure case for users who are not administrators, but its public instructions do not say that an administrator account is universally required for every normal Windows installation.
On a work, school, or otherwise managed PC, installation may be restricted by policy even when Windows appears to let you run the installer. Contact the system administrator rather than attempting to bypass those controls.

Common claims about Chrome on Windows
- “Chrome only works on Windows 11.” This is incorrect for Intel-based PCs. Google currently lists Windows 10 and later. Windows 11 is required specifically for Windows PCs using ARM processors.
- “Chrome 109 is the last version for Windows 10.” This is incorrect. Chrome 109 was the last version for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1. Google currently lists Windows 10 Chrome deprecation as not yet scheduled.
- “Chrome must be installed from the Microsoft Store.” This applies to Windows in S mode, not ordinary Windows installations. On a standard Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, Google’s supported method is to download the installer from its website.
