Level-255 enchantments are not obtainable through Minecraft’s normal enchanting system. On Java Edition 1.21.5 and newer, however, you can create them directly with the modern item-component format used by /give. The command works for individual enchantments, multiple enchantments, and combinations that normal gameplay would reject.
The procedure is different on Bedrock Edition. Vanilla Bedrock does not provide a command for arbitrary level-255 enchantments, so Java commands copied into Bedrock will not work.
Before you start
You need permission to use commands. In a single-player Java world, open the pause menu, choose Open to LAN, set Allow Cheats to On, and select Start LAN World. This temporarily enables commands for that session.
On a multiplayer server, you must be an operator or have an equivalent command permission. If you are using a command block, the world or server must also allow command blocks.

These commands are for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5+. The command format changed in recent Java updates, so the exact version matters.
Give yourself one level-255 enchantment in Java Edition
- Open the chat window with T.
- Enter the command below:
/give @p minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={sharpness:255}]
- Press Enter.
This gives the nearest player a netherite sword with Sharpness 255. Replace the item and enchantment IDs to create a different item.
| What to change | Example |
|---|---|
| Item | minecraft:netherite_sword |
| Enchantment | sharpness |
| Level | 255 |
| Recipient | @p for the nearest player, or your username |
For example, a level-255 Efficiency diamond pickaxe is:
/give @p minecraft:diamond_pickaxe[enchantments={efficiency:255}]
A level-255 Protection netherite chestplate is:
/give @p minecraft:netherite_chestplate[enchantments={protection:255}]
Give an item several level-255 enchantments
Put multiple enchantment entries inside the same enchantments={...} component and separate them with commas:
/give @p minecraft:diamond_sword[enchantments={sharpness:255,knockback:255,looting:255}]
This creates a diamond sword with Sharpness 255, Knockback 255, and Looting 255.
Rank #2
You can also add enchantments that normally conflict. For example, a sword can be created with both Sharpness and Smite by specifying both directly in the item component:
/give @p minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={sharpness:255,smite:255,fire_aspect:255,looting:255,unbreaking:255,mending:255}]
Direct item creation bypasses the usual enchanting-table and /enchant compatibility checks. That does not mean every enchantment is useful on every item; an unsuitable enchantment may have no practical effect.
Useful command examples
| Item | Command |
|---|---|
| Pickaxe with Efficiency and Fortune | /give @p minecraft:netherite_pickaxe[enchantments={efficiency:255,fortune:255,unbreaking:255}] |
| Bow with Power and Punch | /give @p minecraft:bow[enchantments={power:255,punch:255,flame:255,unbreaking:255}] |
| Boots with Protection and Feather Falling | /give @p minecraft:netherite_boots[enchantments={protection:255,feather_falling:255,depth_strider:255,unbreaking:255}] |
| Helmet with Protection and Respiration | /give @p minecraft:netherite_helmet[enchantments={protection:255,respiration:255,aqua_affinity:255,unbreaking:255}] |
Important syntax differences between Java versions
The current format uses square brackets after the item name:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match/give @p minecraft:diamond_sword[enchantments={sharpness:255}]
Do not use these older formats on Java 1.21.5 or newer:
/give @p minecraft:diamond_sword[enchantments={levels:{sharpness:255}}]
/give @p minecraft:diamond_sword{Enchantments:[{id:"minecraft:sharpness",lvl:255s}]} 1
The first example uses an older nested component structure. The second uses the pre-1.20.5 NBT item format. Java 1.20.5 introduced the item-component system, and Java 1.21.5 changed the enchantment component syntax again. If a command produces a syntax error, check the game version before changing the item name or enchantment.

Why /enchant is not the best command
The normal command looks like this:
/enchant @p sharpness 255
On Java, /enchant applies the standard enchantment rules and supported level limits. It is useful for ordinary enchantments, but it is not the reliable way to create a level-255 item. Use /give with the enchantments item component instead.
What level 255 actually does
The number 255 is stored as an unusually high enchantment level. It does not guarantee that the enchantment’s effect will continue increasing without limit.
Some enchantments scale normally for at least part of their range, while others have internal caps, implementation limits, or effects that become impractical at extreme values. For example, a very high level may produce a dramatic result for one enchantment but little visible difference for another. The item’s stored level and its real gameplay effect are not always the same thing.
Level-255 items can also create unusual behavior, make combat or mining trivial, and cause problems in servers that use anti-cheat or item-validation plugins. Test them in a copy of a world before using them in a long-term survival save.
Can you get level-255 enchantments in Bedrock Edition?
Not with vanilla Bedrock commands. Bedrock’s documented /enchant command uses the form:
Rank #4
/enchant <player> <enchantmentName> [level]
Its supported levels remain within the normal enchantment ranges. Typical maximums include:
| Enchantment | Bedrock maximum |
|---|---|
| Sharpness | 5 |
| Protection | 4 |
| Efficiency | 5 |
| Fortune | 3 |
| Looting | 3 |
| Unbreaking | 3 |
Consequently, this is not a working vanilla Bedrock solution:
/enchant @p sharpness 255
Bedrock’s /give command also does not use Java’s [enchantments={sharpness:255}] item-component syntax. Copying a Java command into Bedrock will normally result in an invalid command or an item without the requested enchantment.
Bedrock alternatives
If you need custom high-level behavior in Bedrock, your options are outside the vanilla command system. Depending on the platform, you may use an add-on, a behavior pack, or an external world or inventory editor. These methods can create custom items or modify item data, but they are not the same as obtaining a vanilla level-255 enchantment through /give or /enchant.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “Unknown or incomplete command” | The syntax does not match your Java version. | On Java 1.21.5+, use enchantments={sharpness:255}, not the nested levels form. |
| The command works in a tutorial but not in your game | The tutorial targets another release or edition. | Confirm that you are playing Java 1.21.5+ and not Bedrock. |
| No item is received | Cheats or command permissions are disabled. | Enable cheats in single-player or request operator permission on a server. |
| An enchantment appears but does little | The enchantment has an internal cap or is unsuitable for that item. | Test a different enchantment and do not assume level 255 scales indefinitely. |
| The item cannot be created | An item or enchantment ID is misspelled. | Use lowercase Minecraft IDs such as sharpness, efficiency, and feather_falling. |
FAQ
Is level 255 the maximum enchantment level in Minecraft?
255 is a commonly used high value for command-created Java items, but it is not a level available through normal gameplay. The practical effect can also vary because some enchantments cap or stop scaling normally.

Can an enchanting table make a level-255 enchantment?
No. Enchanting tables, villager trades, loot, and ordinary anvil combining use normal enchantment limits. On Java, level 255 requires command or data manipulation.
Why does the command use square brackets?
Modern Java item data is stored in item components. The square brackets after the item name contain components such as enchantments={sharpness:255}.
Can I put incompatible enchantments on one item?
On Java, directly creating the item with the enchantments component can allow combinations that normal enchanting and /enchant reject. The conflicting enchantments may still behave unpredictably or provide no useful effect.
Does the Java command work on Minecraft Bedrock?
No. Java and Bedrock use different command and item-data systems. Vanilla Bedrock does not support Java’s enchantments component for arbitrary level-255 enchantments.

For Java Edition 1.21.5+, use the modern command-component syntax:
/give @p minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={sharpness:255}]
Add comma-separated enchantments inside the braces when needed. Avoid the old NBT format and the older nested levels format. For Bedrock Edition, there is no vanilla command for arbitrary level-255 enchantments; an add-on or external editor is required.
