You can build a 24/7 YouTube space channel around NASA archive footage, but material being available on NASA’s website does not automatically clear every clip for reuse or guarantee monetization. Check rights for each asset, add meaningful original context, keep records of sources and permissions, and prepare for YouTube’s live copyright checks to interrupt a stream.
A strong channel makes its own contribution clear: for example, through narrated mission histories, science explanations, or a distinct curated program. This helps viewers understand the channel’s purpose and addresses YouTube’s channel-wide review of reused content.
Understand NASA footage rights
NASA says its imagery and video are generally not subject to U.S. copyright, but its sites may contain third-party copyrighted material. A rights holder may be identified on an item, and NASA’s permission to display that material does not grant you permission to reuse it. NASA asks users to acknowledge it as the source when using NASA material.
NASA credit is separate from permission to use NASA branding. NASA’s insignia, logotype, identifiers, and imagery are not public domain. Avoid presentation or promotion that implies NASA endorses or is affiliated with your channel. Commercial use involving identifiable people can also raise privacy or publicity issues; NASA cautions against using employees’ or astronauts’ names or likenesses on commercial products, advertisements, or promotional material.

Plan a channel with original value
Decide what viewers get beyond a sequence of archive clips. Consider narrated mission-history blocks, themed Earth-observation programming, spacecraft explainers, or an ambient stream with original on-screen context. YouTube’s reused-content policy evaluates a channel as a whole. Compilations with little narrative, minimal changes, or repetitive low-value programming can create monetization problems even if you have permission to use the footage.
Make your contribution apparent in the stream, title, channel description, and video description. Permission to use footage and eligibility for monetization are separate questions: meeting one does not guarantee the other.
Build an asset and rights log
Start with NASA’s Image and Video Library and consult each item’s page and NASA’s media guidance. Do not assume that an item is cleared simply because it appears on a NASA site. For every segment, record its source, credit, any listed rights holder or third-party rights note, and how you plan to use it.

- Choose a specific NASA asset and save its item URL or identifier and title.
- Record NASA’s requested credit and any named photographer, rights holder, or third-party rights note.
- Review the footage and audio, including embedded music, voice tracks, and identifiable people.
- Obtain the rights needed for your intended use and territories, or omit or replace uncleared elements.
- Keep the records with a cue sheet showing the segment order, credits, narration, audio source, and a cleared replacement scene.
NASA’s library landing page and the sources reviewed for this guide do not establish a verified bulk-download or API workflow. Check current item pages and official guidance rather than relying on an assumed download recipe. For music and sound effects, YouTube points creators to its Audio Library; do not assume a video’s rights cover its soundtrack.

Add context and make the program legible
Build recurring blocks with original narration, historical context, mission timelines, science explanations, or a distinct curated sequence. A bare playlist or minimally changed compilation risks falling under YouTube’s examples of reused or low-value content. A cue sheet is a useful editorial tool for tracking each segment’s source and your contribution; it is a recommendation, not a platform-mandated form.
Prepare for live copyright checks
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may show a placeholder, warn the operator, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if the material continues. A license may not prevent an interruption unless the rights holder has allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Archived streams may also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast ends.

- Keep source and rights records at the segment level so you can identify a disputed clip.
- Monitor the live stream in YouTube Studio for warnings or interruptions.
- Prepare an alternate cleared slate or original-host segment to use while investigating a match.
- Replace disputed material when needed, and retain documentation of any rights or license you rely on.
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the channel operator to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation, including music rights. Do not treat a successful test broadcast or NASA credit as proof that every element is cleared.
Consider the programming and operational tradeoffs

Review monetization and presentation separately
YouTube reviewers may consider a channel’s videos, description, titles, and descriptions when assessing monetization. Show the channel’s original educational or entertainment contribution and make asset provenance visible in those places. A channel can have permission to reuse footage and still fail YouTube’s reused-content policy.

Credit NASA as the source where appropriate, identify other rights holders as required, and avoid logos or official-looking presentation that could suggest NASA affiliation or endorsement. Keep item-level rights notes and music documentation available if a claim or review arises.

Can a rights-cleared live stream still be interrupted?
