YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material and another live broadcast. If a match is detected, YouTube may warn you, interrupt or terminate the stream if the content continues, and a copyright removal of an active live stream can also lead to a strike and a temporary live-streaming restriction.
Having permission to use music is important, but it may not prevent automated live matching from interrupting your broadcast. YouTube advises creators who have licensed third-party content to ask the rights holder to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist.
How YouTube handles music in live streams
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. This live scanning is separate from Content ID claims on an archived stream: YouTube says those claims are made after the stream ends if you choose to archive it.
A live match can lead to a warning and a placeholder image. If the matched content continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the live stream. Do not assume that a warning is merely a routine claim on a video archive.

Permission may not prevent a live interruption
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for both live and archived content. For music, the relevant rights may involve artists, record labels, publishers, public-performance licensing, and other rights participants. What you need depends on the intended use and territories; one generic license should not be assumed to cover every use.
YouTube says that even licensed third-party content may be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel. If you have a license, YouTube advises asking the content owner to add your channel to its allowlist through Content ID. A license or proof of permission does not itself bypass live matching.

Before you stream music
- Identify the music you plan to use and the relevant rights holders.
- Confirm that your permission or license covers the intended live performance or playback, the territories where you will stream, and any archive or video-on-demand use.
- If the music is licensed third-party content, ask the rights holder whether they can add your channel to their Content ID allowlist.
- Keep your license and correspondence for your records. They may help explain your permissions, but they do not guarantee that automated matching will not interrupt the stream.
Live interruption, Content ID claim, and copyright strike: the difference
| Event | What it means | Possible consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Live-stream interruption | YouTube detects a match while the stream is live. | You may receive a warning; continued matching content may lead to a temporary interruption or termination. |
| Content ID claim | A claim is applied to a video, including an archived live stream after it ends if you choose to archive it. | The rights holder’s policy may block, monetize, or track the video. |
| Copyright strike | A valid copyright removal request results in content being removed. | A removed active live stream can result in a strike and a live-streaming restriction. |
A claim is not the same as a strike. YouTube says a copyright removal of an active live stream restricts live streaming for seven days. Another copyright strike extends the live-stream restriction to 14 days. Copyright strikes expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School and have fewer than three active strikes; a channel with three active copyright strikes is subject to termination. These are YouTube Help policy figures accessed on October 4, 2026; the help pages do not state a publication year, and policies may change.
What to do if your stream stops
- Check YouTube Studio for a strike or other listed issue, and check the official email notice from YouTube.
- Determine whether the event was a live interruption, a copyright removal and strike, or another live-stream restriction. Follow the resolution or appeal instructions YouTube provides for that specific issue.
- If you have rights to the music, contact the rights holder about allowlisting your channel and retain your permission records.
- Do not switch to another channel to evade an active live-streaming restriction. YouTube prohibits this circumvention and says it may lead to account termination.
Live Content ID matching for copied broadcasts
YouTube also documents a live Content ID matching feature for certain eligible rights holders using Content Manager. It helps those partners find copies of their own time-sensitive live content and may warn a streamer, replace a stream with a static image without sound, or terminate it if matching continues. This is a rights-holder tool with eligibility requirements, not a creator-side setting or permission to play someone else’s music.

How long can a copyright strike restrict live streaming?
YouTube Help says a copyright removal of an active live stream restricts live streaming for seven days, and another copyright strike extends the restriction to 14 days. These figures reflect the guidance accessed October 4, 2026, and should not be treated as permanent guarantees.
Can I stream from another channel while my live access is restricted?
No. YouTube says using another channel to stream while a live-streaming restriction is active is circumvention and may lead to account termination.
