If you want to watch an earlier part of a broadcast, use live DVR to pause and seek backward within the available stream window; when you resume, playback continues from where you paused. Whether you can do this depends on the stream’s DVR settings and YouTube’s limits.
How YouTube Live DVR Works
Live DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue watching an ongoing stream. You can seek backward only to a point after the broadcast began; you cannot rewind to before the start of the stream. The available controls may look different depending on your device or app version.
Live DVR is different from watching an archive. Rewinding lets you catch an earlier moment while the broadcast is still live. After the stream ends, a recording of the full stream may be available to watch, including when DVR was disabled. YouTube does not promise that every recording will be available immediately or indefinitely.
How to Rewind a YouTube Live Stream
- Open the live stream in YouTube.
- Use the player’s seek controls to move backward within the available part of the stream. You cannot seek to a time before the broadcast began.
- Resume playback when you reach the point you want to watch. Playback continues from that point while the stream remains live.
The exact placement and appearance of seek controls can vary by device, app version, and stream. YouTube’s help guidance describes DVR behavior, not one universal player layout.

Why You May Not Be Able to Rewind
| Situation | What it means |
|---|---|
| DVR is disabled | The creator may have turned off DVR, so viewers cannot seek backward during the live broadcast. |
| The stream is longer than 12 hours | DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube does not specify a universal rewind-window length. |
| Watching through Apple TV or AirPlay | YouTube says lower DVR limits apply on Apple TV and Apple AirPlay. |
| Using an older YouTube app version | YouTube says older app versions have lower DVR limits. Updating the app may help. |
| The creator changed DVR settings mid-stream | The setting change applies to viewers who start playing after the change; it does not retroactively apply to people who had already started playback. |
How Creators Enable or Check DVR
Creators manage DVR from the YouTube live stream settings in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s instructions direct creators to open the live stream dashboard, go to Stream settings, and toggle Enable DVR under Additional settings. Interface labels may change as YouTube updates Studio.
YouTube also identifies DVR as a stream setting for streams using an encoder or mobile device. Its Manage live stream settings guidance does not apply to webcam streams.

What Happens After the Stream Ends
After a broadcast ends, viewers may be able to watch a recording of the full stream once it is available. This archive is separate from live DVR: it is not a way to rewind during the broadcast. Availability depends on the stream and YouTube’s handling of its recording, so do not assume every stream will be archived or remain available permanently.
