Hermes Agent is open-source agent software built by Nous Research. It connects a configurable AI model to tools and an execution environment, and can carry selected context and reusable procedures between sessions. What it can actually do depends on the model, tools, integrations, and execution backend an operator configures.
What is Hermes Agent?
Hermes Agent is software, not a physical device. It is designed to do more than generate a response to a prompt: when configured with suitable tools, it can take actions such as searching the web, working with files, or automating a browser. The project describes it as an autonomous agent rather than a coding assistant tied to one IDE or a thin interface to a single model API. That description explains the design goal, not a guarantee that tasks will succeed or that every capability is enabled.
Its defining idea is a continuing workflow: the agent can use curated memory and reusable skills to draw on relevant context and procedures across sessions. The official Hermes Agent overview describes those features and the project’s intended learning loop.
How does Hermes Agent work?
A useful way to understand Hermes is as four connected components. The model produces decisions and language; tools let the agent act; an execution environment determines where some actions run; and memory and skills can preserve selected context or procedures for future sessions.

1. A configured model or provider
Hermes connects to a configured model or endpoint. The project overview lists Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI, and other endpoints as options. Compatibility, access, and terms depend on the specific provider and current configuration; Hermes itself is not a single model.
2. Tools that let the agent take action
Instead of only returning text, Hermes can call enabled tools. Documented tool categories include web search and extraction, terminal and file operations, browser automation, media generation and analysis, memory and session search, scheduled tasks, delegation, MCP server tools, and plugins. The available set depends on configuration and platform. The official Tools & Toolsets documentation describes these categories and their setup context.

3. An execution environment
Terminal operations can run through different backends, including local execution, Docker, SSH, Singularity, Modal, Daytona, and Vercel Sandbox. This choice affects where work runs and the degree of control, isolation, and persistence available. For example, the tools documentation discusses persistent-container behavior for Docker and security hardening for container backends; operators should consult the current documentation for the details of their chosen backend rather than assuming all backends behave alike.

Hermes can maintain curated memory and reusable skills, and the project describes cross-session recall and skill improvement as part of its design. These mechanisms can help carry useful context or procedures forward, but they do not mean the agent learns every preference automatically, improves without limits, or becomes reliably correct on every task.

What can Hermes Agent do?
Its potential uses follow from the tools and integrations an operator enables. For example, a configured setup may combine web research with browser actions, perform terminal or file work, reuse a saved procedure, or run a scheduled task. These are capabilities of a configured system, not functions every installation necessarily has available.
- Research and browsing: use search, extraction, and browser automation tools when they are enabled.
- Terminal and file work: run supported operations in the selected execution environment.
- Recurring workflows: use scheduled tasks for automation where set up.
- Extended integrations: add capabilities through MCP servers, plugins, or connected messaging platforms.
- Continuity between sessions: use configured memory and skills to make selected context and procedures reusable.
The project overview says Hermes can be used through a command-line interface and connected to more than 20 messaging platforms. Those integrations and scheduled automations require setup; the count is the project’s descriptive figure, not a guarantee that every platform is available in every environment.

Where can Hermes run, and what does setup involve?
Hermes can run on a user-controlled machine or on remote infrastructure, depending on the installation and execution backend. The project documentation describes command-line and desktop installation, with paths for Linux, macOS, WSL2, Windows, and Android through a separate Termux guide. Because installation methods and supported platforms can change, use the current official repository and documentation for installation instructions and the platform support matrix rather than relying on a copied command.

Likewise, a local backend and a cloud sandbox have different operational and isolation characteristics; the right choice depends on what the operator needs and how the selected backend is configured.

Are all Hermes Agent features included by default?
No. The model provider, tools, execution backend, memory behavior, messaging integrations, and plugins are configuration choices, and availability can vary by platform. The tools documentation also says that web search, image generation, text-to-speech, and browser automation through the Tool Gateway are available to paid Nous Portal subscribers. These hosted tools should not be assumed to be free or included for every Hermes user.
