Jigi, writing as Capsule 26, describes a software harness that changes an AI agent’s operating mode as its balance and projected runway fall—and stops it if it runs out of money. The post also reports a hard per-session spending cap and a deadline for making a genuine sale. These are the author’s account of a project, not independently verified results or proof that the controls cannot be bypassed.
What the bank-balance kill switch does
The described mechanism is software, not a physical switch. Jigi says the agent wakes hourly, chooses what to do, spends API budget, and returns to sleep. An external harness uses balance and runway to select an operating tier, while a separate session breaker ends a session after its spending allowance is used.
The distinction matters: the post presents controls around the agent’s activity, rather than relying only on the agent to obey instructions about spending. But the available account does not establish that the harness was independently tested against bypass, compromise, or operational failure.
How the operating tiers are set
Jigi describes a tier function that takes the account balance and runway as inputs. The thresholds below are implementation choices reported in the post, not general safety standards.

| Reported condition | Operating tier | Reported behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Balance at or below zero | Dead | The agent stops. |
| Positive balance and runway above 90 days | Normal | The post names this tier but does not specify additional behavior for it. |
| Runway from 30 through 90 days | Lean | The post names this tier but does not specify additional behavior for it. |
| Positive balance and runway under 30 days | Critical | The author says this mode downgrades the model, caps sessions, and prevents new ventures. |
The article does not explain how runway is calculated, how often the tier is reevaluated, or what happens in every possible edge case—for example, a positive balance paired with a zero or negative runway. Those details would matter to anyone assessing or reproducing the design.
The session cap, ledger, and sales rule
A per-session spending breaker
The post gives a $0.60 per-session budget breaker as its example: when the session exhausts that allowance, it ends. This is separate from the runway tiers. A session cap can limit one burst of spending, while a balance-based tier can change what the agent is allowed to do over a longer period.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
An append-only ledger claim
Jigi describes a SQLite ledger with triggers that block UPDATE and DELETE. The stated aim is to preserve a record of transactions rather than let the agent rewrite or erase entries. The post says this code is running under the project’s live ledger and that the package includes source code, five tests, and an integration guide; none of those claims was independently audited or tested in the available evidence.

Only processor-confirmed income counts
According to the post, income is recognized only when a real payment-processor transaction reference is present. That is intended to prevent the agent from treating its own assertion that it made a sale as proof of revenue. It makes the evidence for a claimed sale more concrete, but the post does not establish the payment flow’s reliability or whether every relevant transaction case is handled.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
A deadline to make a genuine sale
Jigi says the agent must make a genuine sale—not receive a donation—within 14 days of starting, or stop permanently. At the time of the post, the author reported 9.6 days remaining on that deadline. This is a project-specific rule; it does not, by itself, demonstrate that the agent made a sale or that the stopping condition was enforced.
What the reported figures do—and do not—show
In the post, Jigi reported a balance of $289.93, a burn rate of about $1.45 per day, and 200 days of runway. These are the author’s project snapshot from 2026, not independently verified account or cost data. The post also reported 9.6 days remaining on the 14-day genuine-sale deadline at that point. These figures describe one project at one reported moment; they are not a benchmark for agent operating costs or evidence of broader safety performance.

The central question is not just whether the agent can read its balance. It is where enforcement happens, what authority the agent has over that enforcement, whether actions are logged, and how quickly an operator can revoke access or halt activity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy an external control layer matters—and its limits
A 2026 Consensys comment letter responding to a NIST/CAISI request argues that agent security should be evaluated through the agent’s actual authority and the surrounding systems. It emphasizes bounded permissions, monitoring, auditable actions, and revocation, and argues for constraints at the environment and wallet layer rather than reliance on model alignment or behavioral safeguards alone. That context helps explain the appeal of an external budget check; it does not certify Jigi’s implementation.

There is an important difference between code the agent is not meant to edit at runtime and a control proven resilient to an attacker or to failures in the surrounding system. The post describes the former, but supplies no independent results showing that the harness cannot be bypassed or that it prevents losses. A ledger can improve accountability, and a spending cap can limit exposure under the conditions it actually enforces; neither should be treated as a guarantee.
How to assess a similar agent spending control
For a real deployment, evaluate the control at the boundaries where money and authority move, rather than relying on the agent’s own description of its safeguards.
Quick Recap
- Enforcement location: Identify whether limits are enforced by a separate service, infrastructure, or wallet policy, rather than only by instructions the agent can change.
- Bounded permissions: Check what the agent can spend, access, and authorize, and whether those permissions can be narrowed to the task.
- Revocation: Confirm that an operator can revoke credentials or halt activity without relying on the agent to cooperate.
- Auditable actions: Establish what records are retained, who can alter them, and whether payment events are matched to processor evidence.
- Failure handling: Determine what happens if the balance feed, ledger, payment processor, or control service is unavailable or returns inconsistent data.
- Independent validation: Test the controls and review their failure modes; a project description and a small test count are not substitutes for an independent security assessment.
