You can process video in a browser without ffmpeg.wasm by combining WebCodecs for browser-provided encoding and decoding with Mediabunny for reading and writing media files. WebCodecs works with encoded audio and video chunks; it does not parse a video file’s container or package encoded output into a playable file. Mediabunny provides that higher-level media and container layer.
This is an architecture, not a guaranteed drop-in replacement for FFmpeg or a promise of faster processing. Whether it fits depends on the formats and operations your application needs, plus the codecs available on each target browser and device.
What WebCodecs and Mediabunny each do
A video file usually combines a container—such as MP4 or WebM—with encoded audio or video tracks. Those are separate parts of the processing job.

It exposes frames and samples for processing, but does not demux a container on input or mux encoded chunks into a complete output file. See MDN’s WebCodecs API overview.
- Mediabunny is a JavaScript library for browser-side media reading, writing, and conversion. It handles media-file and container work and provides higher-level pipelines around browser codec functionality. Its documented use cases include metadata extraction, transcoding, procedural media generation, and muxing and demuxing. See the official Mediabunny introduction.
In practical terms, the library can manage the file-level steps while WebCodecs performs codec operations that the browser exposes. The separation matters: a library that can read an MP4 container does not necessarily provide every decoder or encoder that a particular MP4’s tracks require.

How a browser video-processing pipeline fits together
A typical design moves from an input file through track-level processing to a containerized output. The exact APIs and options depend on the operation and formats your application supports; this sequence describes the documented roles, not a tested project-specific recipe.
- Open a browser-readable source. Create an input from a file, blob, or supported stream.
- Inspect the media. Read metadata and identify tracks, their codecs, and other properties needed to decide how to process them.
- Read media samples or packets. Use the library’s abstractions to access track data from the container.
- Transform only what you need. For example, an application may alter video frames or audio samples before encoding.
- Check codec capability and encode. Use a codec operation available in the target browser, or configure an appropriate extension where supported.
- Write a supported output container. Package encoded data and the metadata required for a playable file.
- Report failures clearly. Tell users when a required codec or format is unsupported and provide a defined fallback or recovery path.
For the underlying container concepts, MDN explains demuxing, decoding, and muxing in its video-processing guide.

Check both the container and its codecs
Mediabunny’s official format guide documents reading and writing for containers and formats including MP4 and other ISOBMFF-based formats, QuickTime MOV, segmented MP4/CMAF, Matroska, WebM, Ogg, MP3, WAV, ADTS/AAC, FLAC, MPEG Transport Stream, and HLS. The guide also explains codec availability and exceptions; consult its supported formats and codecs table for the current details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA familiar extension alone is not enough to establish that a file can be processed. The container can hold different codecs, and the browser may expose only some encoding or decoding operations. Check the actual tracks and required operation rather than promising support for every file with a particular extension.

Mediabunny documents support for codecs exposed through WebCodecs, along with certain additional PCM codecs. WebCodecs capability varies by browser and device, so container support in the library does not guarantee that a needed codec is available. The format guide lists utility checks for encoding capability and describes custom coders for cases where a native browser codec is unavailable.
Codec exceptions to account for
The documented exceptions include ProRes, which WebCodecs does not provide and which requires an extension for decoding; AAC encoding, which is unavailable in some browsers; MP3 and FLAC encoding, which WebCodecs does not natively support; and AC-3, E-AC-3, and DTS, which are not natively supported. The official guide lists extensions for several of these cases. These details can change, so verify the current guide and the exact operation you need before building a workflow around an exception.

Choose output codecs for your target playback environments
Choose a codec based on the people and players that must open the output, the encode operations available in their browsers or devices, the required container, and your quality and performance needs. A codec’s presence in a container does not mean the browser can encode or decode it.

MDN describes H.264 as common in MP4 and a pragmatic choice when compatibility with third-party video players matters, but that is not a guarantee for every environment. MDN also notes that royalties may apply in some circumstances. If licensing affects your use, consult current licensing guidance rather than treating a browser compatibility choice as legal advice. Plan for capability checks and unsupported media
Before starting a conversion, check whether the target environment supports the specific codec operation the job requires. For a robust workflow:
- Test encoding and decoding separately when the application needs both; support for one does not establish support for the other.
- Validate the input’s tracks and codecs rather than relying on its filename extension.
- Handle unsupported codecs, malformed or unexpected inputs, and output failures with clear messages.
- Decide whether to offer another output choice, use a configured extension, or stop the operation when the required codec is unavailable.
- Validate capability across the browsers and devices your product targets; a result on one device does not guarantee the same result elsewhere.
When this approach fits—and what it does not establish
Mediabunny with WebCodecs is a reasonable design to evaluate when you want browser-side file handling and need to work with tracks, samples, or frames using codec operations provided by the browser. It can simplify common reading, writing, conversion, and muxing or demuxing work without requiring ffmpeg.wasm as the processing engine.
The documented roles do not establish full FFmpeg feature parity, universal format coverage, or a predictable speed advantage on every device. Choose based on your required inputs, transformations, outputs, and target environments, then verify those exact paths. Do not treat “95s 9s” as a benchmark: the cited documentation does not explain that title suffix or establish a performance result.
