To open Notes from an iPhone Lock Screen, go to Settings > Apps > Notes > Access Notes from Lock Screen and choose Always Create New Note or Resume Last Note. To prevent Lock Screen access, turn the setting off.
Choose what Notes opens from the Lock Screen
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Notes.
- Tap Access Notes from Lock Screen.
- Choose the behavior you want, or turn the setting off to disable access.

Which Notes option should you choose?
| Setting | What it does | Best suited to |

| Always Create New Note | Starts a fresh note whenever you access Notes from the Lock Screen. | Jotting something down without reopening the previous note. |
| Resume Last Note | Continues the previous note. | Returning to an ongoing note from the Lock Screen. |
| Off | Prevents Notes access from the Lock Screen. | Removing this shortcut or limiting access while the iPhone is locked. |
Apple lists the two note behaviors but does not recommend one for everyone. Pick the one that matches how you use Notes.

Apple’s current instructions use Settings > Apps > Notes. If your menus look different, check which iOS version is installed before trying another route; labels and paths can change between versions. Apple’s current Lock Screen instructions provide the documented path.

Use Quick Note as an alternative
If you just want a fast way to jot something down, you can add the Quick Note button to Control Center and tap it from any app or screen. This is a separate feature from Notes access on the Lock Screen; Quick Notes can be viewed in the Notes app. See Apple’s Quick Note instructions.
Consider Lock Screen privacy
Apple says you can manage which features are available while iPhone is locked under Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode, in Allow Access When Locked. Apple notes that disabling feature access can prevent someone holding the locked phone from viewing personal information exposed by that feature, while also removing your quick access. This is general guidance for Lock Screen feature controls, not a description of exactly what any Notes option reveals. See Apple’s Lock Screen access controls.
