To make Google Translate the default for translating selected text, open Settings > Apps > Translate > Default Translation App and choose Google Translate if it appears. The same path applies on iPhone and iPad.
Before you start
- Update your iPhone or iPad to the latest available iOS or iPadOS version. Apple says its Default Apps settings require the latest system software; its developer documentation describes third-party default translation providers as supported on iOS and iPadOS 18.4 or later. Apple’s default-app guidance and developer requirements explain the availability.
- Install Google Translate from the App Store, and update it if an update is available.
Set Google Translate as the default on iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Translate.
- Tap Default Translation App.
- Select Google Translate, if it is listed. Apple documents this route in its iPhone Translate settings guide.

What this default changes
Apple describes the Translation default as the app used when you translate selected text. It does not mean every translation feature on the device is redirected to Google Translate, nor does it replace workflows you start inside Google Translate. Apple’s default-app guidance defines the scope.
To translate selected text, select it in a supported app and tap Translate. If that action is not visible, open the additional actions menu. Apple notes that options can vary among translation apps; see its selected-text translation instructions.

Google Translate also has its own tools for text, handwriting, photos, and speech. These are app features, not settings controlled by Apple’s default-app choice; availability varies by language. Google Translate’s App Store listing and Google’s iPhone and iPad help page describe those workflows.

If Google Translate is missing from the list
- Check for an available iOS or iPadOS update, then install or update Google Translate.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Translate and check Default Translation App again.
- If Google Translate still is not offered, Apple says to contact the app’s developer when a desired app is unavailable as a default. Its public documentation does not identify one cause for every device, so the missing option alone does not establish whether the issue is app eligibility, software version, or device configuration. See Apple’s default-app guidance and its provider requirements.
If Translate is missing after you select text
Open the additional actions menu to look for Translate. If the action still is not available, the app or translation provider may not offer that option for the selection; Apple notes that available actions vary by app. Apple’s selected-text translation instructions cover the menu.
