Google’s account activity auto-delete setting lets you choose how long eligible activity is kept: 3, 18, or 36 months. To use it, open My Activity, find the relevant history control, choose its auto-delete option, select a retention period, and confirm. Google says activity older than that limit is continuously and automatically deleted. The exact menu labels can vary as Google rolls out changes to Search settings.

What Google’s auto-delete setting does

This article interprets the headline’s “Google privacy feature” as Google Account activity auto-delete, the control for setting a retention period on eligible saved activity. It is not a single switch that deletes every kind of Google data. The setting applies to the activity category you configure, and Google lists 3-, 18-, and 36-month retention choices in its current My Activity guidance. Google’s Privacy Controls describes the feature as continuous deletion of data older than the chosen limit.

Auto-delete is a retention rule, not a ban on saving activity. If your goal is to prevent future activity from being saved, review the relevant activity controls separately. Google’s activity management guidance distinguishes managing saved activity from deleting it.

How to turn on auto-delete

  1. Open Google My Activity and sign in to the Google Account whose activity you want to manage.
  2. Locate the activity control for the relevant history category. Google’s account settings may use labels such as Web & App Activity or Search history; follow the labels shown in your account.
  3. Choose the auto-delete option, select 3, 18, or 36 months, then confirm the choice.

Google says Search-services settings are being updated gradually, so the exact path and wording may differ between accounts. If you cannot find the option in the same place as a guide or screenshot, use the activity controls displayed in your account rather than assuming the setting is unavailable.

Choose a retention period that matches your needs

Choice What it means
3 months Eligible activity older than three months is subject to automatic deletion. This keeps the shortest history of the listed options.
18 months Eligible activity older than 18 months is subject to automatic deletion, leaving more history than the 3-month option.
36 months Eligible activity older than 36 months is subject to automatic deletion, leaving the longest history among the listed options.

The choice is a trade-off: a shorter history means older eligible activity is removed sooner, while a longer period preserves more history in the account. Google’s guidance does not establish that one interval is best for everyone.

What auto-delete does not cover

It does not erase every kind of Google data

My Activity is not a complete inventory of everything associated with your account. Google says emails and Drive files are not stored in My Activity. Maps Timeline and browser history are managed separately, so review those controls if those are the records you mean to remove. Google’s activity help explains these distinctions.

Location Timeline has its own controls

Google Maps Timeline is separate from the general activity controls. Google says Timeline can save precise location regularly and offers 3-, 18-, or 36-month auto-delete periods, or the option to keep Timeline data until you delete it manually. Turning Timeline off does not affect location saved through Search-services history, Web & App Activity, or other Google products. See Google Maps Timeline help before changing location settings.

Turning off saving is different from deleting saved activity

Stopping future collection does not necessarily remove what was already saved. Google specifically notes that turning off Timeline leaves previously saved Timeline data in place until you delete it or its configured auto-delete period elapses. For other categories, check the relevant control and delete existing activity separately if you want it removed.

Delete activity manually when you do not want to wait

You can delete activity without waiting for the auto-delete period. In My Activity, filter by date, product, or keyword, then delete the matching entries or use the available date-range deletion controls. Google describes manual deletion and automatic deletion as ways to start removal of activity; auto-delete does not prevent you from deleting selected items sooner. Google’s instructions for managing activity cover the available controls.

What happens after deletion—and what may remain

Google says deletion starts a removal process. Activity is first removed from view and is no longer used for personalization, then deletion proceeds through the company’s storage systems. This is not a promise that every copy disappears instantly: Google says limited information may remain for safety, legal, financial, service-continuity, or communication purposes, and anonymized data may be retained. Some information about service use can remain until the account itself is deleted. These are Google’s descriptions of its own processes, not an independent audit. Google’s Privacy Policy explains its stated data practices.

A practical privacy check

  • Set an auto-delete period for each activity category you want to manage; do not assume one setting covers all Google services.
  • Use manual deletion for specific older activity you do not want to keep until the selected cutoff.
  • Review Maps Timeline separately if you want to manage saved location history.
  • Check browser history in the browser where it was saved; it is not the same as My Activity.
  • Revisit the controls if Google’s account menus change, since its Search-settings rollout may alter labels or placement.
