Hakoniwa is a Linux project that combines kernel security facilities to run a process inside an isolated environment. It is available as both a command-line tool and a Rust library. Its documentation describes controls for namespaces, filesystem access, networking, resource use, and system calls—but the project cautions that sandboxing does not make untrusted code safe.

What Hakoniwa is

Hakoniwa describes itself as process isolation for Linux using namespaces, resource limits, cgroups, Landlock, and seccomp. Its repository documents a command-line interface (CLI) as well as a Rust library; the crate documentation describes a Container API for creating namespaces, building a root filesystem, and constructing a command to execute. The project repository and the Rust crate documentation explain these capabilities from the project’s perspective. They are not an independent security audit or evidence of tested escape resistance.

How Hakoniwa describes its isolation design

The project says it creates a new, empty mount namespace whose root is a temporary directory. That directory is automatically cleaned up when the last process exits. Within this setup, Hakoniwa documents several controls that address different parts of process execution:

  • Namespaces: Linux namespaces provide process isolation. A separate mount namespace helps keep filesystem changes within the environment.
  • Filesystem root: Hakoniwa uses pivot_root to establish a new root filesystem for the process, rather than leaving it with the host’s ordinary root view.
  • Networking: A network namespace is paired with pasta for user-mode networking.
  • Resource limits: The project lists setrlimit and cgroup v2 through systemd among its resource-control mechanisms.
  • Filesystem rights: Landlock is used to restrict ambient rights, including global filesystem access.
  • System calls: seccomp restricts which system calls the process may make.

These facilities cover distinct boundaries: a new filesystem view does not itself define network access, syscall policy, or resource ceilings. The project presents them as a layered design, but its documentation alone does not establish how effective the configuration is against a particular threat or whether it suits a specific workload.

What Hakoniwa is intended to run

The repository names several example use cases. These are the project’s stated applications, not independently tested recommendations:

  • Restricted builds: compiling source code in a restricted sandbox, with makepkg as an example.
  • Isolated desktop applications: running browsers or proprietary software, such as Firefox, in an isolated environment. The project also mentions profiles for desktop applications.
  • Root-filesystem workflows: entering a root filesystem with chroot, installing GUI applications there, and launching them.

The Rust library offers a programmatic route: its documented Container API creates namespaces, builds a root filesystem, and prepares a command for execution. Consult the crate documentation for the API details rather than assuming that the CLI and library expose identical workflows.

What Hakoniwa does not guarantee

The project’s warning is explicit: “Running untrusted code is never safe, sandboxing cannot change this.” Treat Hakoniwa as a way to apply isolation controls, not as proof that hostile code cannot escape, access sensitive data, or cause harm. The documentation cited here does not provide an independent assessment of escape resistance or a guarantee for any particular threat model.

Before using any sandbox for a workload, decide what it must be prevented from reaching—such as host files, network services, or excessive system resources—and assess whether the documented configuration addresses those risks. Do not place secrets or critical systems within reach merely because a process is launched through a sandbox.
