DraftKey is a Mac writing assistant built to provide corrections, autocomplete, and selected-text rewrites inside compatible text fields, rather than making users move passages into a separate AI chat. Its creator, Michel Johnson, says he built it after repeatedly getting typos or struggling to make a sentence sound right while writing emails, messages, and documents.
Why Michel Johnson built DraftKey
In his October 1, 2026, article on DEV, Johnson describes a workflow problem: he would be writing an email, message, or document, make typos, or get stuck trying to phrase a sentence well. DraftKey is his attempt to put writing assistance where that work already happens, so a user can get help without repeatedly copying text into a separate AI conversation.
That makes DraftKey a workflow-focused tool, not a general-purpose chat assistant. Its intended audience, as Johnson describes it, includes developers writing documentation, students, founders, writers, and remote workers communicating through email, messaging apps, and documents. These are the creator’s proposed use cases, not independently measured user groups.

What DraftKey does in a text field
Corrections after a pause
DraftKey is described as checking spelling and grammar after the user pauses typing. The aim is to catch routine writing errors without requiring the user to open a separate tool or run a manual check.

Autocomplete with Tab
The app can suggest the next few words as the user writes. Johnson says a suggestion can be accepted by pressing Tab, keeping the interaction within the current writing flow.
Rewriting selected text
A user can select text and ask DraftKey to change its tone or wording—for example, to make it friendlier, shorter, clearer, or more professional. Johnson says the rewritten version can be reviewed before it is inserted, rather than replacing the selection without review.

Optional keyboard sounds
DraftKey also includes six recorded keyboard sound profiles, with adjustable volume, tone, and stereo positioning. This is an optional feature; it is not a hardware requirement.
Where the writing model runs—and what still needs internet
Johnson says the writing model runs locally on the Mac and that the text used for corrections, autocomplete, and rewrites is not sent to a cloud AI service. He also says an internet connection is needed to download the model, activate a license, and check for updates. These are the creator’s product claims; the available source does not include an independent audit of the app’s data handling.

Mac requirements and text-field compatibility
Johnson’s article reports that DraftKey supports Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 14 or newer, and that AI features require at least 8 GB of memory. The writing-model download is reported as about 1.12 GB. These specifications are attributed to the developer’s article and have not been independently tested here.
The app uses macOS Accessibility to work with compatible text fields. Johnson says secure fields are excluded, and support can vary depending on how an editor implements its text field. That means “works across your Mac” should not be read as a guarantee that every app or input field is supported.
License details the creator shares
Johnson describes a lifetime license covering up to three Macs, positioning it as an alternative to a monthly AI subscription. His article does not state the current price, refund policy, or detailed license and activation terms, so those purchase details cannot be established from that description alone.
