There is no confirmed Google Assistant outage in the available official status information, so a service-wide problem cannot be ruled in or out. The Google Play Status Dashboard reported no incidents at its October 7, 2026, 10:58 UTC update, but it covers selected Play developer products—not Google Assistant. Check your device’s connection, microphone, and Assistant settings first; the steps below follow Google’s guidance for Android phones and tablets and for Google speakers, displays, and Smart Clocks.
Start with the symptom
What happens after you say “Hey Google” helps identify which check to try first. On a speaker or display, lights or the screen may indicate that it heard you; the exact indicator varies by device.
- No activation indicator: Check power, internet connection, microphone mute, Hey Google, Voice Match where applicable, and background noise.
- It activates but gives the wrong answer—or no useful answer: It may have heard the hotword but misunderstood the request. Repeat it, speak more slowly, or rephrase it.
- A shared device responds but does not give personal results: Check Voice Match and the devices linked to your account. Assistant does not provide personal results to a voice it does not recognize as yours.

Try these five fixes
1. Check the connection and restart the device
On an Android phone or tablet, confirm that the internet connection is strong; Google recommends restarting the device if you are having connection problems. On a speaker, display, or Smart Clock, check that it is powered on and connected to the internet. Then unplug its power cable, reconnect it, and let it restart.

2. Update the Google app on Android
On an Android phone or tablet, open the Google app’s listing in the Google Play Store and tap Update if that option appears. If the listing says Installed, Google says the latest version is installed. This app-update check is for Android; it is not the physical restart step for a speaker or display.

3. Turn on Hey Google and configure Voice Match
On supported devices, open Assistant settings, go to Voice Match, turn on Hey Google, and complete Voice Match setup if prompted. Menu labels and availability can vary by device. A Google Workspace for Education administrator may have disabled settings needed for Assistant.

4. Check settings that can block or affect activation
Verify that Assistant is set to the language you speak. On Android, Google also recommends testing with Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery turned off. On a speaker or display, check its physical microphone switch or mute button: Google says Assistant will not respond if the microphone is off or muted.
5. Speak clearly, then retrain Voice Match if needed
Say “Hey Google” and watch for the device’s activation indicator. If it responds to the hotword but not the request, try repeating the request, saying “Hey Google, repeat the question,” speaking more slowly, or phrasing it differently. In a noisy place, move somewhere quieter and speak naturally.

If recognition remains unreliable, Google’s Voice Match instructions include a Teach your Assistant your voice again option on supported devices. Google Home and Nest Help describes the activation and request-understanding checks in its speaker and display guidance.
