There is no independently tested “best” Moodle theme for every school or training site. The right choice depends first on compatibility with your Moodle release, then on how much branding and page-building control you need, what your budget allows, and whether the theme meets your accessibility and support requirements. These eight options provide a practical shortlist; check each current listing before installing or purchasing.

Free Moodle themes to consider

Moove

Moove is a free theme whose Moodle Marketplace description says it aims to make online environments “more clean and intuitive for learners and educators.” The listing states compatibility with Moodle 3.2–5.2. It showed 27,596 installs on June 21, 2026; that is a dated marketplace count, not a measure of quality or learning impact.

Stream

Stream is a free Boost child theme listed for Moodle 4.0–5.2. The marketplace highlights color and icon customization, course-header images, and course and category cards on the front page. It may suit administrators seeking visual adjustments without a paid page builder.

Boost Union

Boost Union is a free Boost child theme listed for Moodle 4.0–5.2. Its listed controls include branding, navigation, and design options, with optional footer blocks. Check the current listing for details relevant to your release.

Almondb

Almondb is a free Boost-based theme listed for Moodle 4.0–5.2. Its marketplace description emphasizes customization of options, elements, blocks, and pages, giving administrators several ways to shape the site without buying a theme.

Academi

Academi is a free, responsive, customizable theme aimed at educational institutions. Its listing states Moodle 2.6–5.2 compatibility. Because that is a broad stated range, verify that the currently available version supports your exact Moodle release.

Paid Moodle themes to consider

Lambda is a paid theme listed at US$79 and for Moodle 4.0–5.2. Its marketplace description focuses on course pages, flexible headers, and configurable layouts. The price and compatibility range can change; confirm the current offer, license, updates, and support terms before purchasing.

New Learning

New Learning is a paid theme listed from US$99 and for Moodle 4.0–5.2. Its listed features include a Live Page Builder, an accessibility widget, advanced course filters, and custom course pages. The starting price is not necessarily the total cost; review the current license and included support.

Edwiser RemUI

Edwiser RemUI offers a visual personalizer, page builder, dashboards, dark mode, focus mode, RTL support, and templates, according to Edwiser. The vendor page lists theme files for Moodle 3.0–5.1 and says to use the version that matches the Moodle release. Edwiser’s page describes multiple price plans, a 15-day trial, and a 30-day refund claim; confirm the terms and current availability directly with the vendor.

How to choose the right theme

Start with your Moodle version and hosting

Match the theme’s stated compatibility range to the exact Moodle release running your site. A range on a marketplace or vendor page is a point-in-time claim, not a guarantee for every configuration. Also confirm that your hosting environment permits third-party plugin installation. Moodle’s marketplace listings are the starting point for checking the options above, but verify compatibility and maintenance status before rollout.

Match page control to the work you need to do

Decide whether your team only needs branding and color changes or must build custom front pages and course pages, create reusable blocks, filter courses, or edit layouts visually. These are different levels of control; a longer feature list does not establish better teaching or learning outcomes. A Boost child theme may be enough for a lighter customization job, while a paid builder may be worth considering when staff need to change many page layouts themselves.

Evaluate accessibility with real tasks

Test the theme against your institution’s accessibility requirements rather than relying on a feature label. Check keyboard navigation, screen-reader behavior, color contrast, mobile layout, translations, and right-to-left content on the pages learners actually use. An “accessibility widget” does not by itself demonstrate conformance.

Compare the full license and support terms

For paid themes, check the current price, whether renewal is required, how many sites the license covers, what updates and support are included, and the refund conditions. For any theme, confirm its update cadence and support window for your Moodle release. Avoid treating promotional claims about speed or broad plugin compatibility as independent test results; no independent performance or accessibility measurements are established here.

Installing a Moodle theme

For RemUI, Edwiser’s guidance is to download the theme file that matches the site’s Moodle release, then upload it through the plugin installer. The exact labels may vary by Moodle version; use current vendor documentation and your institution’s change-control process.

  1. Confirm the Moodle release running on the site and download the matching RemUI theme ZIP.
  2. In Moodle, open Site administration → Plugins → Install plugins.
  3. Upload the ZIP file and review the plugin validation report before proceeding.
  4. Follow the current vendor instructions and your site’s normal testing and deployment process.

What “best” can—and cannot—mean

Edwiser’s 2026 comparison names additional options, including Space, Adaptable, Academi, and Maker. Its rankings, ratings, feature comparisons, and “best” labels are vendor-published assessments, not independent theme testing. Edwiser also reports 4.9 stars across 200+ reviews for RemUI; treat that as the vendor’s reported rating, not an independent review result. No independent study statistic establishing that a Moodle theme improves performance, accessibility outcomes, learner satisfaction, or learning gains is established here. Choose based on verified compatibility and your own testing with representative courses and users.
