If Apple Notes records audio but no transcript control appears, first check whether your Mac and device language meet Apple’s transcription requirements. If the recording itself is silent or will not start, check microphone access instead: that is a separate problem and permission does not make an unsupported Mac eligible for transcription.
First, identify what is missing
- No transcript control, but audio records: Check the Mac’s chip, device language, region, account, and where you are looking in Notes.
- The recording is silent or will not start: Check microphone access for Notes. This addresses audio capture, not transcription eligibility.
Apple says spoken words in supported languages are automatically transcribed in Notes. Its guide says the feature requires a Mac with M1 or later and that availability varies by language and region. Apple’s Notes guide does not promise one fix for every missing control.
Check whether your Mac and language are supported
Confirm the chip
Choose Apple menu > About This Mac. Notes audio transcription requires Apple silicon, M1 or later. If the Mac does not meet that requirement, microphone permissions, a different recording app, or Apple Intelligence settings will not enable Notes transcription on it.

Confirm the device language
Apple lists English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese for Notes transcription. Check the Mac’s device language against that list. Do not use Apple Intelligence summary-language support as a substitute: its language list is not the same as Notes transcription’s.

Check language and region availability
Apple cautions that audio transcription is not available in every language and region. The listed languages alone do not establish that every language-region combination is available. Check Apple’s current macOS feature availability information for your location if the chip and device language appear eligible.
Find the control in the right place
The transcription control belongs to audio recording inside a note. Start or open an audio recording in Notes and look for the control while recording. For a recording that already exists, open its details to view the transcript; Apple also documents searching and copying text from the audio details. If the control is absent despite meeting the documented requirements, that can indicate Notes does not detect a supported language or that the Mac does not meet the minimum requirements.

Check microphone access if Notes is not capturing sound
Use this step only when the recording does not start or captures no audio. On macOS Ventura or later:

- Quit Notes.
- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- Enable Notes in the app list, then reopen Notes and try recording.
The exact wording of controls can vary by macOS release. Apple’s microphone-permission guidance concerns recording access; it does not say that granting permission unlocks transcription on a Mac that does not meet Notes’ requirements.

Test an iCloud note, then compare Voice Memos if helpful
Try an iCloud note
Apple says the Notes features described in its guide are available with iCloud notes, and some features may be unavailable with accounts from other providers. If you are using a non-iCloud account, make a test recording in an iCloud note. Treat this as a diagnostic, not a guarantee that the transcript control will appear.
Use Voice Memos as a comparison
Apple documents transcription in Voice Memos on macOS 15 or later with Apple silicon, subject to regional limitations. It can help you compare another built-in recording path, but it is not a guaranteed workaround for Notes. If Voice Memos also lacks transcription, that does not by itself prove Notes should lack it; the apps have their own documented conditions. See Apple’s Voice Memos transcription guide.

If the requirements appear satisfied but the control is still missing
- Install the latest macOS version compatible with your Mac.
- Quit and reopen Notes.
- Test a new recording in an iCloud note.
- If the control remains absent, contact Apple Support and provide your Mac model and chip, macOS version, device language, region, account type, and whether audio recording works.
Updating, restarting, and testing a new note are general troubleshooting steps; Apple’s guide does not promise they will restore a missing transcription control.
