Apple Face ID is one specific facial-authentication system; Android Face Unlock is a broad label for features that differ by phone maker and model. Apple describes Face ID as using its TrueDepth camera and infrared depth information, along with attention checks and anti-spoofing measures. Google’s Pixel documentation describes one Android implementation, but Pixel capabilities should not be assumed for every Android phone.
For a practical comparison, check the exact phone’s security classification and app support, performance with low light or face coverings, and how it stores biometric data.
How Face ID and Android Face Unlock capture a face
Apple Face ID
Apple says the TrueDepth camera projects and reads more than 30,000 infrared dots to create a facial depth map, alongside an infrared image. Face ID uses neural networks for matching and anti-spoofing, and checks that the user’s eyes are open and directed at the device. Apple says it is designed to work indoors, outdoors, and in total darkness. These are Apple’s descriptions of its system, not results from an independent comparison. The dot count comes from Apple’s Face ID Security Guide, dated November 2017, so it should not be treated as a specification verified for every current device.
Android varies by phone
There is no single Android-wide face-unlock implementation. As one documented example, Google says Pixel setup captures images of a face from different angles to create a face model. That Pixel description does not establish how other Android manufacturers build or secure their systems. Android’s biometric categories describe security properties and app access, rather than one universal sensor design.

Security and app authentication are not the same across phones
Apple’s published estimate
Apple says the probability that a random person in the population could unlock an iPhone or iPad Pro using Face ID is less than 1 in 1,000,000 with a single enrolled appearance, whether or not the person is wearing a mask. Apple notes that the probability is higher for twins, similar-looking siblings, and children under 13. This is Apple’s stated estimate, not an independently verified head-to-head comparison with Android.
Android biometric classes and Pixel support
Android’s open-source biometric framework groups implementations into Class 3, Class 2, and Class 1 based on security architecture and spoofability testing. Class 3 biometrics can expose authentication APIs to apps; Class 2 cannot integrate with Keystore to release app authentication-bound keys. The class applies to a particular biometric implementation, not to every face-unlock feature on Android. See the Android biometric security documentation.

Google warns that Pixel Face Unlock can be less secure than a strong PIN, pattern, or password, and that someone who looks very similar may be able to unlock the phone. Google says Pixel 8 and later can use Face Unlock for app identity verification and purchase approval; Pixel 7 and later support Face Unlock for device unlocking. The feature’s availability can still depend on settings and app support. Consult Google’s Pixel Face Unlock instructions for model-specific details.

Low light, glasses, and face coverings
Apple says Face ID is designed to work in total darkness and with many hats, scarves, glasses, contact lenses, and sunglasses. Face ID with a mask is available on supported devices; availability and behavior depend on the device and software. Apple’s Face ID guidance describes the system’s intended conditions, not a guarantee that every face or situation will be recognized.
Google’s Pixel guidance says Face Unlock may not work in low light or if sunglasses or a face mask obstruct the face. Google recommends setting up fingerprint unlock as an alternative. This describes Pixel support, not every Android phone. If face recognition is unreliable on a particular device, use its fingerprint reader or enter the device passcode, PIN, pattern, or password.

How biometric data is handled
Apple
Apple says Face ID representations are encrypted and protected by the Secure Enclave. They remain on the device, are not sent to Apple, and are not included in device backups. Third-party apps receive only the result of an authentication attempt; they cannot access Face ID data. Apple explains the app-facing behavior in its Face ID security documentation.
Google Pixel
Google says the face images captured during setup are not stored; the resulting face model is securely stored on the device and never leaves it. Processing happens on-device, and Google says the model is used only for Face Unlock rather than shared with Google services or apps. These statements apply to Google’s documented Pixel implementation and should not be generalized to other Android manufacturers.

What to check before relying on face unlock
- Exact model: Confirm that the phone supports face unlock and check the maker’s instructions for its specific model and software.
- Security class and use: On Android, find out whether the face biometric is Class 3, Class 2, or Class 1 and whether the apps you need accept it. A screen-unlock feature does not automatically have the security level or app eligibility required for financial or other sensitive app authentication.
- Conditions: Check the manufacturer’s guidance for low light, glasses, masks, and other coverings. Keep a fingerprint or passcode available where supported.
- Privacy details: Read the device maker’s explanation of where face data is stored, whether processing is on-device, and what apps can receive. Pixel and Apple documentation cannot establish practices for another manufacturer.
