Neither Google Ads nor Facebook Ads is universally better or cheaper. Google Search is designed to reach people as they search for products or services; other Google campaign types can put ads in front of people browsing or watching video. Choose based on how your likely customers encounter your offer, then compare qualified leads or sales—not clicks alone.

How Google Ads and Facebook Ads reach potential customers

The key difference is often the moment each channel can meet a potential customer. A Google Search campaign can show an ad when someone searches for a product or service an advertiser offers. That makes Search a way to respond to expressed demand, although a search or click by itself does not prove that someone is ready to buy.

Google Ads also extends beyond search results. Google documents campaign types including Display, Video, App, Shopping, Demand Gen, and Performance Max. These formats can reach people while they browse sites or apps, watch video, or encounter other Google inventory. The placements and available settings depend on the campaign type.

Facebook Ads—also discussed in current marketing as Meta advertising—can serve discovery and social placements. The available official Meta material here is not a current guide to Ads Manager, its objectives, or all its placements. Treat specific setup instructions or claims about how every placement works as something to verify in the current account interface.

Google Ads vs Facebook Ads at a glance

Decision Google Ads Facebook Ads / Meta
When it can reach people Search can reach people actively searching for offered products or services; Display and Video can extend reach to browsing and video contexts. (Google campaign documentation) Can serve as a discovery and social-placement channel. The current Meta materials available here do not substantiate a detailed account of all present placements.
Campaign choices Documented types include Search, Display, Video, App, Shopping, Demand Gen, and Performance Max. Performance Max accesses Google Ads inventory across channels; Shopping promotes retail inventory and needs Merchant Center data. (Google campaign documentation) Meta reported on Advantage+ shopping campaigns in 2022, but that report does not establish the definitive 2026 Ads Manager structure.
Goals and setup Google lists goals such as sales, leads, website traffic, and awareness-related objectives, depending on campaign type. The goal should guide campaign type, budget and bidding, assets, and targeting. (Google campaign documentation) Current objective names and setup choices are not established by the official Meta materials available here.
Budget and bidding Google automated bidding uses system data to optimize bids; the campaign’s average daily budget controls overall spend. Maximize conversions and Maximize clicks are examples of distinct strategies. (Google bidding documentation) Current Meta budget and bid controls are not established by the sources cited here. A platform-wide cost comparison is not supported.
Comparative cost or return A current, independent, same-market comparison of CPC, CPA, or return against Meta is not established. A current, independent, same-market comparison of CPC, CPA, or return against Google is not established.

Which platform is better for leads or sales?

Start with the behavior that could produce the result. If customers already search for the problem you solve or the service you provide, Google Search is a relevant way to reach that expressed demand. For a retailer with usable product data, Google Shopping or Performance Max with a Merchant Center feed may be relevant options. Neither choice guarantees that the resulting traffic will convert.

If the task is to introduce an offer to people who may not be actively searching for it, consider discovery-oriented inventory and test whether it produces qualified downstream actions. This is a strategic implication of the available formats, not a performance guarantee. Do not choose a channel just because a click or impression appears inexpensive.

For either channel, define what counts as a qualified lead or completed sale before launch. A lead that cannot be contacted or a sale that loses money may be cheaper to acquire and still be less valuable to the business. Use the conversion event and qualification standard that match the actual business result.

How to choose and compare the channels

  1. Set the business outcome. Decide whether the campaign is intended to produce sales, qualified leads, website traffic, or awareness. Google documents these goal categories, with availability depending on campaign type.
  2. Match the campaign to the customer’s context. For active searches, consider Google Search. For retail inventory, assess whether the product data needed for Shopping or Performance Max is available. For discovery while people browse, consider relevant inventory and validate its downstream quality.
  3. Define the measurement before spending. Record the conversion event, lead qualification rule, sale value or contribution economics, and conversion window you will use. Apply the same business definition when comparing results across channels.
  4. Test under interpretable conditions. If both channels are plausible, set a defined budget, time period, geography, audience, and outcome definition for each test. Avoid treating results from unlike periods or markets as a clean comparison.
  5. Evaluate the outcome that matters. Compare qualified leads, sales, or appropriate contribution economics. Do not declare a winner based only on CPC, click volume, or an unqualified lead count.

How Google’s bidding and budget controls affect the comparison

Google’s automated bidding uses system data to optimize bids, while the average daily budget sets the campaign’s overall spending control. Maximize conversions and Maximize clicks are not interchangeable: one is oriented toward conversions, the other toward clicks. Choose a strategy in line with the campaign’s intended outcome rather than assuming automation makes the outcome itself valuable.

No fixed budget split between Google and Meta follows from the available evidence. The appropriate spend depends on the business’s economics, its market, and whether each channel can deliver the defined outcome.

What the available Meta results do—and do not—show

Meta reported in 2022 that Advantage+ shopping campaigns had 12% lower cost per purchase conversion in its study of 15 A/B tests, compared with business-as-usual ads. That is a Meta-reported historical result about its own campaign approach. It is not a head-to-head test against Google Ads, a current platform-wide benchmark, or a promise that another advertiser will see the same result.

Meta also published a 2017 statement by Rob Goldman, then identified as VP Ad Products, that its auction prioritized relevance to users rather than how much money Facebook would make from a given ad. That is a dated statement of company principle, not independent verification of present auction outcomes or a basis for predicting campaign performance.

Why attribution can make a platform comparison difficult

A customer may encounter more than one ad before taking action. If each platform is assessed using a different attribution setup or conversion definition, reported results may not be directly comparable. The available sources do not quantify cross-channel overlap or establish a current, equivalent measurement method for Google and Meta.

For a useful test, keep the business outcome definition consistent and be explicit about the period, geography, audience, and conversion window. Treat platform-reported results as one view of performance, not automatic proof that a channel caused every credited sale.
