Chrome’s built-in tools can make browsing easier to organize, more consistent across devices, and better suited to your privacy and accessibility needs. Start with the task at hand: manage tabs, separate profiles, choose what syncs, review site access, or troubleshoot slow pages. Menu names and available features can vary by device, operating system, and Chrome version.
Organize tabs without losing track of your work
Chrome lets you keep frequently used pages close, change their order, and move them between windows. On a computer, you can also use split view to work with two pages side by side. Tab-group previews appear when you hover over a group.
Open tabs and windows
To open a new tab, use Ctrl+T on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS, or Command+T on Mac. For a new window, use Ctrl+N on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS, or Command+N on Mac.

Pin, reorder, and move tabs
- Pin a site: Pin tabs you return to often so they stay compact in the tab strip.
- Reorder tabs: Drag a tab left or right to put it where you want.
- Move a tab: Drag it out of its current window to make a separate window, or drag it into another Chrome window.
- Use split view: Open two pages together when you need to refer to one while working in the other.
For the current desktop tab controls and platform-specific guidance, see Google’s guide to managing tabs in Chrome.

Keep work and personal browsing separate with profiles
A Chrome profile can keep its own browsing context, including items such as bookmarks, history, and settings. Separate profiles are useful when you want work and personal browsing to stay distinct on the same computer. A profile is not required to use Chrome.
Choose one profile when convenience matters more than separation. Use different profiles when you want clearer boundaries between contexts, such as keeping work bookmarks and sign-in sessions apart from personal ones. Google explains how to create and personalize profiles in its Chrome profile guide.

Choose deliberately what Chrome syncs
Signing in to Chrome lets you save selected Chrome information in your Google Account and access it on other devices where you use that account. Sync is selectable: possible saved items include bookmarks, reading list, passwords, payment information, extensions, web apps, settings, and preferences. Tabs and history are also available when enabled. You can choose what information is saved rather than treating sync as all-or-nothing.
Consider what you want available elsewhere before enabling each category. Cross-device access can be convenient, but account data handling matters too: Google says Chrome history saved to your account may be added to Web & App Activity and used to personalize other Google products, depending on your settings and country. Review the available choices in Google’s Chrome sync instructions.

Review site permissions and privacy choices
Chrome settings let you review which sites can access features such as your camera, microphone, and notifications, along with other site permissions. If a site no longer needs access, revisit its permission in Chrome’s site settings. Google’s Chrome settings overview points to privacy, permissions, and security controls.
Understand Safe Browsing and Incognito
Safe Browsing can alert you to malware, risky extensions, phishing, and potentially unsafe sites on Google’s list. The protection choices available to you involve a balance between protection and your privacy preferences; review Google’s explanation of privacy in Chrome when deciding what suits you. As Google puts it: “However, privacy is a personal choice and not one size fits all.”

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Incognito can help keep a browsing session private from other people who use the same device. It does not make you anonymous: websites still process data as you browse. Treat it as a way to limit what is retained in your regular local browsing context, not as a shield from websites.

Chrome’s settings include options related to zoom, language and page translation, accessibility, Reading mode, and Listen to this page mode. These can help you adjust how content appears or is presented. Availability and labels may depend on your device, platform, and Chrome version, so check the relevant settings on the device you use. Google’s settings overview links to these personalization, language, and accessibility areas.
Troubleshoot slow browsing in Chrome
Start with browser-level checks before changing several settings at once. Google recommends updating Chrome, closing tabs you no longer need, disabling unused extensions, checking resource-heavy tasks, and reviewing page preload settings. Its step-by-step guide to speeding up Chrome covers these options.
- Check for an update: Install an available Chrome update, then see whether the slowdown persists.
- Close unused tabs: Reduce the number of pages Chrome needs to keep active.
- Disable extensions you do not use: If performance improves, re-enable extensions selectively to identify which ones contribute to the slowdown.
- Inspect resource-heavy tasks: Use Chrome Task Manager to see which browser tasks are consuming resources, then close a task only if you recognize it and no longer need it.
- Review page preloading: Preloading may make pages load sooner, but it involves data-use trade-offs. Google says preloading may use cookies if allowed and may send pages through Google in encrypted form to hide identity from sites. That is Google’s description of its behavior, not a universal privacy guarantee.
Chrome’s settings overview also includes reset options if you need to consider a broader settings change; use the narrower checks above first when you are troubleshooting a specific slowdown.
