On desktop Chrome, open More > Settings > Privacy and security to reach the main privacy controls. Start by reviewing third-party cookies, Safe Browsing, and site permissions. These settings can reduce cross-site data sharing and limit unnecessary access, but they do not make you anonymous—and stricter controls can disrupt some websites.
Where to find Chrome’s privacy controls
In desktop Chrome, select More > Settings > Privacy and security. From there, review Third-party cookies, Security for Safe Browsing, and Site settings. Menu names and available options may differ by device, Chrome version, language, or administrator policy. A work- or school-managed browser may have settings locked by its administrator.
Google Chrome Help notes that “privacy is a personal choice and not one size fits all.” A practical approach is to tighten cross-site controls, retain browser security protection, and grant sensitive site permissions only when you need them.
How to limit third-party cookies without breaking every site
Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies. Third-party cookies are set by a site other than the one shown in the address bar, often because another service is embedded in the page. First-party cookies come from the site you are visiting and can support features such as staying signed in or remembering preferences. Chrome’s cookie controls and their possible effects are described in Google Chrome Help.

- Choose a third-party cookie restriction. Blocking these cookies limits one way sites can share or use data across different websites. It may also interfere with sign-in flows, embedded media, or other features that depend on them.
- Use exceptions only when a trusted site needs them. If a site stops working, add an exception for that site rather than relaxing the setting for all sites. Google’s help describes temporary allowances that may last 90 days in regular browsing or only for the Incognito session; check Chrome’s current wording and controls because they can change.
- Remove stored data selectively when appropriate. You can delete data for selected sites or clear site data more broadly. This can sign you out and erase saved site preferences, so it is not a consequence-free privacy reset.
These controls address third-party cookies specifically; they do not mean that all site storage or tracking is removed.
Which Safe Browsing setting should you choose?
Safe Browsing checks for dangerous websites, downloads, and extensions. Chrome documents three choices under Settings > Privacy and security > Security. The amount of information sent to Google varies with the protection level and threat checks. The current options and their data practices are explained in Google Chrome Help.

Enhanced protection is not the most private choice simply because it offers stronger security checks: it sends more information for those checks. Choose based on your security needs and comfort with that sharing; disabling protection is not a general privacy upgrade.

- Location: Set access to ask or block unless sites you trust routinely need it.
- Camera and microphone: Review which sites are allowed to use them. Keep access available for services you use, but remove permissions you no longer need.
- Notifications: Limit requests or block them if you do not want websites to send browser notifications.
- Embedded content: Review access for content from other sites embedded in a page, which can have different needs from the page itself.
- Other controls: Site settings also cover items such as pop-ups, automatic downloads, clipboard access, and local network access.
Rather than disabling every permission, grant access only when a site has a clear reason to use it. A per-site review helps preserve legitimate functions while limiting unnecessary access.

Do Not Track is a request, not a block
Chrome’s Do Not Track setting sends websites a request not to collect or track browsing data. Google says it is off by default and that most websites and services, including Google’s, do not change their behavior in response. It is an optional signal, not a substitute for cookie controls or permission review. See Google Chrome Help for the setting’s description.

Incognito limits what other device users can see
Google describes Incognito as helping keep browsing private from other people who use the device. That scope does not mean websites or network operators cannot see activity. Incognito is useful for keeping a separate local browsing session, not for making browsing anonymous. Google’s explanation is in its Chrome privacy overview.

A sensible order for making changes
- Review third-party cookie blocking and add a site exception only if a trusted site’s needed feature fails.
- Choose a Safe Browsing level that fits your security needs and comfort with information sharing; keep some protection enabled.
- Audit permissions for location, camera, microphone, notifications, and embedded content, both globally and for individual sites.
- Use Do Not Track only as an additional request, and use Incognito for its limited local privacy purpose.
