If Instagram rejects a backup code, first check that the prompt is asking for a backup code—not an SMS or authenticator-app code—and that the saved code belongs to the Instagram account you are trying to access. If it still fails, use the recovery options Instagram actually offers. Keep any device where you are already signed in logged in while you work through the problem.
First, identify which code Instagram is asking for
Instagram backup codes, text-message codes, and authenticator-app codes are different credentials. A code from one method will not substitute for another. Read the login prompt carefully and use a saved backup code only when Instagram explicitly requests one.
Check the saved code before trying again
- Confirm the code was saved for the same Instagram account you are logging into. If you manage more than one account, it is easy to select the wrong account’s information.
- Check the original saved copy and carefully re-enter the characters. Look for transcription errors, such as a mistyped character or an accidental space.
- If you have more than one saved code, do not assume a particular order, expiration period, or number of permitted uses. The accessible official guidance does not establish Instagram’s current rules for those details.
Choose the next step based on what you can access
| What you can access | What to do |
|---|---|
| A saved code you believe is for this account | Verify the account and prompt, then enter the code carefully. |
| Another verification method is displayed | Use that method if you can access it. Instagram’s available options can depend on the account, so no one method is guaranteed to appear. |
| No working code or usable verification method | Open Instagram’s official login help or account recovery flow and follow the choices shown for your account. The Instagram Help Center search excerpt identifies login help as relevant to losing access, but the full article was not accessible for review. |
Keep an existing signed-in session available
If you are still signed in on a device or browser you control, do not log out while troubleshooting. That session may let you review account security and recovery contact details. Meta recommends keeping account phone and email information up to date and using two-factor authentication; see its Instagram security guidance.

Treat a suspected compromise as a security issue, not only a code-entry problem. When you can access the account, review its activity and recovery contact details, and use official Instagram channels. Meta’s July 13, 2021 security article warns that Instagram will not send account-security messages by DM; it says authentic communications can be checked in the app’s “Emails from Instagram” area. Do not share a login or security code with someone who contacts you claiming to provide support.
