If you can’t hear someone on an Android call, first turn up call volume while the call is active. Then check whether audio is routed to a Bluetooth device and whether the phone’s earpiece is blocked. If the problem happens only in certain places or on some calls, compare another location, time, or contact before assuming the phone is broken.
1. Turn up call volume during the call
Android separates call volume from media and ringtone volume. Start or answer a call, then press the phone’s Volume Up button. If an expanded volume panel appears, make sure you are adjusting the call slider rather than media or ring volume. Google describes call volume as the “volume of the other person during a call” in its Android volume settings guidance. Samsung likewise says in-call volume can be changed only while a call is active.
2. Check whether call audio is going to another device
A paired headset, speaker, or car system may be selected for call audio even when you expect to hear the call through the phone. Briefly turn Bluetooth off to isolate the route, or open your phone’s Connected devices settings and inspect the accessory’s options. Google’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance advises checking whether another paired device is receiving calls and enabling its Phone audio option when appropriate. Not every car supports calls over Bluetooth.

If you are using earbuds, check that they are connected for phone-call audio, fitted correctly, and not muted. Samsung’s Galaxy Buds guidance lists fit, connection stability, sound settings, and surroundings as factors in call quality; its settings and instructions may not apply to other headset models.

3. Check the earpiece for a physical obstruction
If the other person is hard to hear through the phone but other audio routes work, inspect the receiver opening at the top of the phone. On Galaxy devices, Samsung warns that an ill-fitting third-party screen protector can block the receiver. Remove a film that covers it or replace it with one made to fit the exact phone model. Also check that the case or wrap does not cover that model’s vents; vent locations vary by phone, so do not assume Galaxy locations apply to other Android devices. On a Galaxy phone, also check whether Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements > Mute all sounds is enabled. Menu names and locations can vary by model and software version.

4. Compare calls, people, and locations
If the problem is intermittent or tied to one place, end the call and try again from another location or at another time. Try a different contact as well, and if possible restart both phones. Temporary network or connection issues, coverage, and surrounding conditions can affect call quality, according to Samsung’s call troubleshooting guidance.

If every call is affected, note when it began. A newly added case or accessory, recently installed calling app, drop, or liquid exposure can help narrow down what changed. Remove a new accessory and compare the call using the phone alone. A problem after impact or liquid exposure is a reason to seek manufacturer service rather than keep testing the device.

5. Separate a microphone problem from an earpiece problem
If the other person can hear you but you cannot hear them, the issue is on your incoming-audio path or call routing—not simply evidence that your microphone has failed. On Galaxy phones, Samsung suggests recording a short clip in Voice Recorder or Camera and playing it back when investigating microphone problems. A clear recording is evidence that the microphone is working normally, but it does not prove the incoming-call receiver is healthy. Samsung’s Galaxy microphone guidance describes this check.
6. Use safe steps after liquid exposure or an app change
If a Galaxy phone got wet, Samsung recommends drying it with a clean, soft cloth and letting it air-dry. Do not insert tools into openings or use compressed air; Samsung warns that compressed-air cans can damage the device when drying or cleaning it.

For a Galaxy phone with audio trouble that may have started after installing an app, Samsung describes Safe mode as a way to check whether downloaded apps are involved. Follow the official instructions for your exact model. Avoid a factory reset as an early step: Samsung notes that it erases data.
7. Decide whether to contact the manufacturer or carrier
- Contact the phone manufacturer or arrange service if the issue persists after checking volume, routing, and obstruction, or if it began after a drop or liquid exposure.
- Contact your carrier if cellular call problems continue after device checks, especially when they vary by location or appear to affect multiple calls.
Android makers use different menus, diagnostics, and service routes. The detailed obstruction, Safe mode, microphone, and drying steps above are Samsung Galaxy guidance; they are not a universal Android diagnostic procedure.
