For a U.S. student studying abroad, the strongest verified options in the available issuer information are Bank of America Travel Rewards for Students and Capital One Savor Student: both are advertised without foreign transaction fees. That does not make either a universal winner. Check whether the card network is accepted where you will be, whether you meet the issuer’s eligibility rules, and whether you can pay the balance in full. Discover student cards may be a secondary option, but limited acceptance outside the United States makes one a risky sole card. Two other frequently mentioned candidates, Quicksilver Student and Zolve Classic, need more current issuer-level verification before they can be recommended for overseas purchases.
How to choose a student card for a semester abroad
Start with the costs and practicalities of using the card overseas, not its headline rewards rate. A foreign transaction fee applies to eligible purchases made in another currency or outside the United States, according to the card’s terms. It is separate from interest: carrying a balance can cost money even on a card with no foreign transaction fee.
- Foreign transaction fee: Check the current fee disclosure for the exact product. Offers and terms can change.
- Network and local acceptance: Confirm the card’s network and ask your school, host program, or local contacts what is commonly accepted at your destination. Do not rely on one card.
- Annual fee and rewards: Compare the annual fee, if any, with rewards on spending you actually expect. A flat rate is straightforward; category-based rewards depend on eligible purchases and issuer rules.
- Eligibility: Student branding does not guarantee approval. Review enrollment, age, income, and credit-history requirements before applying.
- APR and repayment: Rewards do not offset interest charges. Plan to pay the statement balance in full when possible.
Before departure, contact the issuer about travel notices and access to your account from abroad. Carry a backup payment method, ideally on a different network, and keep the issuer’s contact details available.

The issuer page currently lists a 0% introductory APR for 15 billing cycles, followed by a variable APR. This is a changeable offer, not a reason to carry a balance; verify the live terms before applying. NerdWallet’s October 2026 comparison describes it as a travel-rewards option for students with established credit, so students with a thin credit file should not assume approval is easy.

Its published student definition includes someone currently enrolled, or admitted and planning to enroll within three months, at an accredited university, community college, or other higher-education institution.

Discover it Student Cash Back
Discover says its student cards are intended to help students build credit through responsible use, reports account activity to the three major credit bureaus, and does not require a credit score to apply. Applicants still have to meet age and income requirements. For applicants under 21, income rules can differ; Discover says applicants must be at least 18 and meet age-specific income requirements.

The overseas drawback is acceptance: NerdWallet’s current comparison flags limited acceptance outside the United States. That makes a Discover card a poor choice as your only payment card for a semester abroad, even if its current terms otherwise appeal to you. Check acceptance in your actual destination and carry another payment method on a different network.

Capital One Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards Credit Card
NerdWallet’s October 2026 comparison describes Quicksilver Student as a flat-rate cash-back student card and notes that accessibility may be uncertain. Current issuer-level foreign transaction fees and network details were not established in the reviewed information. Do not choose it specifically for overseas purchases until you verify those details in Capital One’s current disclosures.
Zolve Classic Credit Card
NerdWallet’s current comparison names Zolve Classic as an option for international students. Current issuer-level fees, application availability, card network, and overseas acceptance were not established in the reviewed information. Treat it as a lead to investigate, not a verified recommendation, until the issuer confirms those points.
The current comparison of student cards is at NerdWallet’s college student card guide; use it as a starting point, then verify product details directly with the issuer.

- Open the current issuer disclosure. Confirm the foreign transaction fee, annual fee, APR, rewards rules, and any introductory offer for the exact card. Do this again close to application, since terms can change.
- Check your eligibility. Read the enrollment, age, income, and credit-history requirements. A card labeled for students is not a promise of approval.
- Check acceptance at your destination. Confirm the card network and ask your school or host program about local payment practices. Use a second payment method, preferably on another network.
- Plan account access. Ask the issuer how to reach support and manage your account while abroad, and whether it recommends a travel notice.
- Budget for repayment. Make at least the required payments on time and avoid carrying a balance if possible. Interest can outweigh the value of rewards.
Which one should you choose?
If you want the clearest verified no-foreign-transaction-fee options from the issuer information reviewed, compare Bank of America Travel Rewards for Students and Capital One Savor Student against your eligibility and spending. Bank of America’s card offers a stated flat 1.5 points per dollar and is characterized by a current comparison as better suited to students with established credit; Capital One states that purchases outside the United States do not incur a transaction fee and publishes a specific enrollment definition. For either card, confirm current fees, network, rewards, and approval requirements before applying.
Do not make a Discover student card your only overseas payment method if acceptance is uncertain, and do not assume Quicksilver Student or Zolve Classic is suitable abroad until issuer-level terms are confirmed. No single card is the best choice for every student or destination.
