You can build a useful starter task manager by beginning with a small task list that lets you create, view, edit, complete, and delete tasks. Add a database when you want tasks to persist across visits, and add accounts only if people need private, separate task lists. This is a learning project—not a production-ready app by virtue of following a quickstart.
1. Decide what the first version will do
Keep the first release focused on one task title and a completion state. Make sure a user can:
- Add a task and see it in the list.
- Edit its title.
- Mark it complete and undo that change.
- Delete it.
Leave due dates, labels, projects, sharing, and drag-and-drop for later. A small working loop makes it easier to learn how the interface, application code, and data storage fit together.

Two documented routes pair a React app with Supabase, a service for storing and querying data. Next.js is a React framework for full-stack web applications; Vite is another way to scaffold a React app. The official guides do not establish that either is categorically easier for every beginner.

If you are new to React, start with the route whose framework you are willing to learn. The Next.js docs link to React and Next.js foundations courses; whichever route you choose, expect to learn some HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and React along the way.
3. Create the project and configure it locally
- Follow the official quickstart for your chosen route. Create a Supabase project when the guide asks for one, then use its database setup instructions.
- Copy the project URL and publishable key into the local environment file and variable names specified by that guide. Do not paste credentials into application source code or commit them to source control.
- Use the guide’s commands to install dependencies and start the local development server. Confirm that the starter app loads before adding task features.
Exact setup labels and commands can change, so use the current steps in the linked guide rather than copying commands from an older tutorial. For deployment, Supabase’s Next.js guide says to set credentials through the deployment platform’s environment variables, not by committing them.

4. Plan a simple task table
The Supabase quickstarts demonstrate creating a table and querying rows, but their example data is not a prescribed task schema. For a starter app, a reasonable implementation is a tasks table with these fields:
id: a unique identifier for each task.title: the task text.is_complete: a true-or-false completion value.created_at: when the task was added.due_date: optional, if you decide to support due dates.user_id: the owner’s identifier, if the app has accounts and user-specific tasks.
Use the database guide to create the table and make a first query. Begin with listing stored tasks; then connect the create, edit, completion, and delete actions to database operations. Keep user ownership in the schema from the outset if you plan to offer separate accounts.

5. Build and test the task flow
Start with adding and listing
Build a form for entering a title and a list that displays saved tasks. Prevent blank titles, and show a clear message when the list is empty. If data is being fetched, show a loading state; if a request fails, explain that the list could not be loaded and give the user a way to retry.
Add edit, complete, and delete actions
Give each task an obvious way to change its title, toggle completion, or remove it. Check that each action updates the displayed list and the stored record. For completion, make the state visible without relying on color alone.

Exercise the main cases
- Create a task, reload the page, and confirm whether it remains according to your storage setup.
- Edit a title, mark the task complete, undo completion, and delete it.
- Try an empty or invalid title and verify that the form explains what needs fixing.
- Test the empty list, a slow or failed request, and keyboard-only navigation.

A single-person prototype can defer login. If multiple people need their own private lists, authentication becomes part of the design. The Next.js authentication guide separates three jobs:

- Authentication establishes who the user is.
- Session management tracks the signed-in user’s state across requests.
- Authorization decides what that user is allowed to access.
A successful sign-in does not, by itself, authorize someone to read or change a particular task. The Next.js documentation says: “While you can implement a custom auth solution, for increased security and simplicity, we recommend using an authentication library.” Next.js Authentication guide

7. Protect private task records before deployment
For a multi-user app, associate every task with its owner and configure database access policies so users can work only with their own records. Supabase uses Row Level Security (RLS) for database policies. Enable and review RLS, and check that policies scope each operation to the authenticated owner.

Do not copy a sample policy into a private task app without checking what it permits: Supabase says its quickstart policy is scoped to sample data and advises reviewing RLS policies before deployment. Before launch, set credentials in the deployment environment and review database permissions and policies. A starter template or working sign-in flow is not a security review.
