AI can help you plan email campaigns and produce first drafts faster, from campaign angles and subject lines to calls to action and audience-specific versions. Treat every result as a draft: verify its facts, fit it to your brand, and check the final email for compliance before sending. No fixed time saving or performance improvement is guaranteed.

What AI can do in an email campaign

AI is most useful for generating and reshaping copy: it can offer ideas, create draft text, and produce alternatives for a marketer to assess. The work still depends on accurate inputs and human decisions about what to send.

For example, HubSpot documents an AI email creation feature that can generate a marketing email for a target audience and action, using an existing layout or template. Its output can include a subject line, preview text, body, and calls to action. Access requires enabling generative AI tools, and the documentation lists Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise eligibility. HubSpot recommends proofreading and editing for brand voice and checking accuracy, especially statistics and content generated in a language other than English. See HubSpot’s AI email creation documentation.

10 practical ways to use AI for email campaigns

1. Brainstorm campaign angles

Give the tool the campaign goal, audience, offer, and constraints. Ask for several distinct directions rather than a long list of near-identical slogans. Compare the ideas against the actual offer and choose a direction that serves the campaign’s purpose.

2. Generate subject-line options

Ask for alternatives that emphasize different truthful benefits or use different tones. Check that the selected subject accurately describes the email; a clever line is not useful if it misleads recipients.

3. Draft preview text

Supply the subject line and the email’s main point, then request preview-text options that add useful context. Choose one that complements the subject instead of simply repeating it.

4. Create a first body-copy draft

Provide verified product details, the intended audience, offer terms, and the action readers should take. Ask for a draft with a clear structure, then check every factual claim against the approved source material. Do not let the tool fill gaps with plausible-sounding details.

5. Write calls to action

Request concise alternatives that tell the reader what to do next. Match the wording to the real landing-page action: for example, do not imply that a reader can buy if the linked page only explains a product.

6. Repurpose approved material

Use approved product or editorial material as the source for a campaign draft. Ask the tool to preserve the source’s facts and key conditions, then compare the output with the original before sending. Summarization or rewriting can omit qualifications or alter meaning.

7. Adapt copy to brand voice

Give the tool a short voice guide and a few approved examples. Specify what to preserve, such as formality, sentence length, or terminology. Review the result rather than assuming that instructions alone will make every line sound like the brand.

8. Personalize carefully

If your email platform supports personalization, use relevant audience or CRM information to tailor the message. Check that the data is accurate, the audience rules are appropriate, and each version remains truthful and useful to its recipient.

Platform details matter. HubSpot describes its nurture agent as a beta that uses CRM data and web research to tailor subject lines, preview text, CTA text, and body copy for a percentage of recipients. Its documentation lists Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise eligibility and says HubSpot credits are required; AI access and data-sharing settings can be configured. These conditions mean the feature should not be treated as universally available. See HubSpot’s nurture-agent documentation.

9. Prepare alternatives for review

Ask for a small number of meaningfully different versions, such as one focused on a practical benefit and another on an offer. Have a marketer assess them for accuracy, tone, and audience fit. An AI-generated alternative is not evidence that it will outperform the existing copy.

10. Build reusable prompts and checklists

Keep a repeatable brief with the audience, campaign goal, approved facts, offer terms, voice guidance, and constraints. Pair it with a review checklist so routine drafts need less setup while still receiving the same editorial and compliance checks.

What time savings can you expect?

HubSpot reports that 54% of marketers saved 1–5 hours per week and 31% saved 6–10 hours per week through AI in their email workflow. These are figures attributed to HubSpot research; the surfaced article does not show the sample, field dates, or methodology needed to judge how broadly they apply. Treat them as reported survey results, not a forecast for your team or a guarantee. See HubSpot’s article on AI email marketing.

Your actual result depends on how much time you spend drafting, how complete your inputs are, how much editing the output needs, and how the tool fits into your existing workflow. AI can reduce some drafting work, but it does not eliminate review, approvals, list preparation, or sending checks.

Review AI-assisted copy before sending

Use a human review before a draft reaches recipients. Check the content itself and the delivery details, not just spelling and tone.

  • Confirm names, dates, prices, offer restrictions, and product claims against approved sources.
  • Test links and make sure each call to action leads to the page or action it promises.
  • Verify that audience targeting and any personalization fields are accurate and appropriate.
  • Check the brand voice and remove unsupported claims or invented details.
  • Review the subject line, sender information, advertising disclosures where required, physical address, unsubscribe mechanism, and opt-out handling.

Keep commercial email compliant

In the United States, the FTC says CAN-SPAM applies broadly to commercial messages, including business-to-business email. Requirements include accurate header information, non-deceptive subject lines, clear and conspicuous identification of advertising, a valid physical postal address, an opt-out mechanism, and honoring opt-out requests within 10 business days. A sender cannot transfer away its legal responsibility by hiring another company to send the email. Consult the FTC’s CAN-SPAM compliance guide.

The ad identification does not have to appear in the subject line: FTC attorney Christopher E. Brown explains that the law does not require senders to identify the message as an advertisement there. That does not make deceptive subject lines acceptable; the advertising identification must still be clear and conspicuous. See the FTC’s answers to CAN-SPAM questions.

Consent rules can also depend on the jurisdiction and the platform’s requirements. Mailchimp’s guidance, for example, tells users to consider consent, audience settings, subscribed contacts, and relevance. That is platform guidance, not a complete statement of U.S. law. Review Mailchimp’s email marketing compliance guidance and the rules applicable to your recipients.

Choose features that fit your workflow

When evaluating an AI email feature, distinguish drafting from recipient-level personalization. Check whether it can use your existing templates, what plans qualify, whether usage credits apply, which CRM or audience data it can access, and how you can review and edit its output before sending.

Product announcements can become outdated. Intuit announced a Mailchimp email content generator in 2023, describing copy options based on industry, marketing intent, and tone; that announcement establishes the feature’s historical existence, not its availability today. Check current product documentation before relying on a particular feature. See Intuit’s 2023 announcement.
