Apple does not give a fixed time for installing iOS 27. The total can vary with the update’s size, your internet speed, and the iPhone’s available storage. It also includes more than the installation itself: the iPhone checks for an update, downloads it, prepares it, and then installs it.
What affects the update time?
- Internet speed and activity: Apple says download time depends on update size and internet speed. A slow or shared connection can delay the download; Apple recommends using Wi-Fi and avoiding other downloads.
- Update size: A larger update can take longer to download and install. Apple does not publish an iOS 27 download size or a time estimate by iPhone model in its guidance.
- Available storage: Apple identifies device storage as a factor in installation time and says insufficient space can prevent an update from completing.
- Compatibility and availability: The update appears only for compatible devices. Apple also notes that an earlier iOS version may need to be installed first.
- Connection or server issues: Problems reaching Apple’s update server or maintaining an internet connection can interrupt a wireless update.
For wireless updates, iPhone downloads only the components needed for the update, which Apple says improves network efficiency and enables faster downloads. That does not establish a specific number of minutes for iOS 27.
How to start the update
- Check that your iPhone is compatible with iOS 27 and back it up before updating. See Apple’s iOS 27 download instructions.
- Connect the iPhone to power and Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update, then tap Download and Install if iOS 27 is available.
- Follow the onscreen instructions. If the update has already downloaded, Apple says you can choose Update Now or Update Tonight.
The iPhone can remain in use while the download is underway; it will notify you when the update is ready to install.
What to do if the update seems stuck
While it is downloading
Check that the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi and pause other downloads. A slow download is not the same as a stalled installation, and Apple does not specify a number of minutes that makes a download abnormal.

While it is installing
Check the progress displayed on the iPhone and keep it connected to power. Apple’s guidance gives no time cutoff for deciding that an installation pause is abnormal, so avoid treating a particular number of minutes as a universal threshold.
If the update fails or will not appear
Try again on the same network, then try another network if the problem continues. You can also update using a computer: Apple says a connected computer downloads a full copy of iOS or iPadOS, while a wireless update downloads only the components required.

If the update file may be damaged, delete it from Settings > General > [device] Storage, then return to Software Update and download it again. If a computer does not recognize the iPhone, or the Apple logo remains on screen for several minutes without a progress bar, follow Apple’s recovery-mode guidance.
When to use a computer instead
Use the wireless route first when the update is available in Software Update. If it does not appear or repeated wireless attempts fail, connect the iPhone to a supported Mac and use Finder, or use iTunes on an older Mac or Windows PC.
