What if your AI agent never left the browser? It could work through the same pages you do—but that alone would not tell you whether the AI runs on your computer, what browser data the agent can access, or where that data goes. The key is to separate the model, the connection that carries instructions and page information, and the browser profile where your tabs and sign-ins live.
What “never left the browser” actually means
The phrase describes where you interact with the agent, not necessarily where its computing happens. A browser agent can connect to a browser running on your device, or control a browser hosted by a provider. In either case, the model that plans actions may run elsewhere.
Think of the setup as three parts:
- Model or planner: decides what to do based on a task and the information it receives.
- Control channel: sends actions, such as clicking or typing, to the browser and returns observations to the agent.
- Browser and profile: display pages and may hold tabs, cookies, and other session data.
Keeping the interaction in a browser therefore does not, by itself, make an agent local, private, or safe. The practical questions are what it can read, where that information is processed, and what it is allowed to do.

Can an agent see your cookies and other profile data?
It depends on how it connects. Chrome’s documented auto-connect mode is designed to let an AI agent work with an existing Chrome workflow. Its setup requires Chrome 144 or later, enabling remote debugging, and configuring the DevTools MCP server with an auto-connect flag. When enabled, the agent can access more than the currently visible page: Chrome lists open tabs, cookies, local storage, session storage, and other data surfaced through JavaScript APIs as accessible. Chrome’s setup and access documentation describes the mode.

Chrome says that the DevTools for agents server is a local process and does not send browser data, session tokens, or telemetry to Google. That statement is specifically about the DevTools server. It does not establish what a separately connected agent application or model provider receives or retains; those data flows depend on their own design and terms.
Where does the browser run—and where can data go?
Browser location and model hosting are separate choices. A local browser connection may use a model hosted elsewhere; a provider-hosted browser moves the browser session off your device. Neither arrangement alone tells you the full data path. Product documentation should be checked for what the browser, control service, and model each receive.
Rank #2
| Example arrangement | Browser location and access | What the documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome DevTools auto-connect | Connects an agent to an existing local Chrome workflow; access can include tabs, cookies, and storage. | Chrome describes the DevTools server as local and says it does not send browser data, session tokens, or telemetry to Google. This does not establish the connected agent’s or model provider’s data practices. Chrome DevTools documentation. |
| OpenAI computer-use API | The Agents API runs the browser in an OpenAI-hosted environment; the application starts the session and follows its events. | This is a hosted browser arrangement, not an attachment to the user’s already-open local profile. OpenAI computer-use documentation. |
| Browser Use | Its CLI and open-source Python library can connect to a local or cloud browser; its hosted API runs both the agent and browser. | The project says cloud profile sync transfers cookies, but not local storage, IndexedDB, or extensions; some sites may require signing in again. The Python library is MIT-licensed. Model inference and hosted browsers may have separate usage charges. Browser Use project documentation. |
These examples illustrate different arrangements, not a ranking. A local bridge may avoid sending browser data to the bridge operator while an external model or application has its own data pathway. A hosted browser may separate a task from your personal profile but involve supplying credentials or syncing some profile state. The details depend on the product and configuration.
Can a webpage trick the agent?
Yes, web content is untrusted input. A page can contain instructions intended to manipulate an agent into ignoring the user’s goal, disclosing information, or taking an unsafe action. An agent that can read authenticated pages or use account controls makes permission boundaries and approval design especially important.

A May 19, 2025 paper by Mykyta Mudryi, Markiyan Chaklosh, and Grzegorz Wójcik, The Hidden Dangers of Browsing AI Agents, reports a white-box analysis of Browser Use. Under its specific threat model, it describes prompt injection, domain-validation bypass, and credential exfiltration, and proposes defenses including input sanitization, planner-executor isolation, formal analyzers, and session safeguards. Those findings are a case study of one system and threat model, not proof that every browser agent has the same vulnerabilities. Read the paper on arXiv.
The 2025 AI Agent Index reports that 2 of 5 browser agents had documented prompt-injection vulnerabilities in its reviewed set. The index also says documented security incidents concentrate in browser agents and relate to prompt injection. This is a sample-specific finding, not an estimate of prevalence across all products or a measure of current risk across the market. The index appears in the FAccT ’26 proceedings, held June 25–28, 2026. Read the AI Agent Index paper.

How to assess a browser agent before connecting an account
Use these questions to evaluate a specific product and configuration; the available documentation does not support a complete cross-vendor comparison of action controls or defenses.
- Browser location: Does it use your existing profile, an isolated browser on your device, or a browser hosted by a provider?
- Data access: Can it see only the active page, or also tabs, cookies, storage, and authenticated sessions?
- Data routing: What is processed locally, and what reaches the agent service, browser host, or model provider?
- Credentials: Do they remain in a profile, get synced, or need to be supplied separately? Which types of profile data are transferred?
- Consequential actions: Does the agent ask for approval before purchases, messages, or account changes? Check the product’s actual controls rather than assuming they exist.
- Untrusted-page defenses: How does it handle instructions embedded in pages, limit tools or domains, and separate page content from the user’s directions?
- Operational fit: Does your task require your logged-in personal session, or could it be completed in an isolated browser?
Feature availability, permissions, and terms can change, so verify the current documentation for the specific version and setup you plan to use.
