If Meet links keep spawning extra windows, Google’s built-in Meet PWA flow lets you install and open Meet as an app, but it does not promise that every link will reuse an existing window. For automatic routing—especially across multiple Workspace accounts—Dock’s Chrome Web Store listing says it can direct supported links to the matching open PWA window. That capability and Dock’s privacy statements are the developer’s claims, not independent test results.
Why a Meet link may open another window
Installing Google Meet as a progressive web app (PWA) gives you an app-style way to open Meet. It does not, by itself, ensure that a meeting link clicked in another app will go to the one Meet window you already have open. Google’s instructions explain how to install the PWA and open a meeting in it; they do not guarantee single-window routing for every external link.
There may also be a Chrome/macOS window-handling issue in some configurations. A Chromium issue report describes a case where an external link creates a new normal browser window even though a tabbed window is open, when the profile’s last-active window is an app-type window. The report concerns macOS and Chrome versions 150 and 151 and describes a change associated with M146. It is a version-specific report, not evidence that this is the cause for every user or that a fix has shipped. See the Chromium issue report.
Choose the right way to open Meet links
| Option | What it does | Automation and account handling | Authority and trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Meet PWA | Installs Meet and lets you open a meeting from its green room using the Open app control. | Manual opening flow; Google does not promise that external links will reuse an existing window. | Official Google instructions. Requires Chrome 73 or later, according to Google’s help page. |
| Dock extension | Its Chrome Web Store listing says it routes supported links to an existing PWA window, or opens the installed PWA when no matching window is open. | The listing says link account information or a saved mapping can guide links to the correct account window. | Automated routing as described by the listing; claims are not an independent test or audit. |
| Community macOS script | A community Gist describes an AppleScript/shell-command approach using a Meet app ID and Chrome profile argument. | Potentially manual or custom automation; behavior depends on the script and local setup. | Unofficial and may require maintenance. Compatibility is not guaranteed. |
Install and open the Google Meet PWA
- Open Meet in Chrome. Go to meet.google.com. Google’s help page lists Chrome 73 or later as a requirement, and Chrome must be open during installation.
- Install the app. Use the install control in Chrome’s address bar. Google says Meet will then appear in the app dock.
- Open a meeting in the app. If the meeting is already open in a browser, enter its green room and select the Open app control. This is Google’s documented manual opening step; it does not set a rule for future links clicked elsewhere.
For Google’s full instructions, see Install the Google Meet progressive web app.

Route links across multiple accounts with Dock
Dock is a Chrome extension intended for people using multiple work accounts and PWAs. Its Chrome Web Store listing says it can send matching work-app links to an existing PWA window, open the installed PWA if no matching window is open, and use account information in a link or a saved mapping to select the appropriate account window. These are product-listing claims; verify the current listing and permissions before installing.
The same listing says Dock makes no network requests and stores rules, account colors, and open-window information locally in Chrome storage. This is the listing’s privacy description, not an independent review of the extension’s code or network traffic.

Check which browser opens external links
If clicking a Meet link launches a browser you did not expect, check the default browser selected in macOS settings. Apple’s instructions explain how to choose it. Changing the default browser affects which browser handles external links; it does not ensure that Chrome routes them into one existing Meet window. See Change the default web browser on Mac.
