canvas.toBlob() does not use its quality argument for PNG. The HTML Standard excludes image/png from its variable-quality rule, so changing a slider cannot make PNG encoding progressively smaller or lower fidelity through that argument. JPEG and WebP can use a requested quality value when the browser supports the format, but neither the resulting file size nor visual quality is guaranteed to match across browsers. The title’s claim of measured results is not supported by reproducible measurements here, so this article explains the API behavior rather than presenting invented test data.
What the quality argument actually controls
The method accepts a callback, an optional MIME type, and an optional quality value:
canvas.toBlob(callback, type, quality)In the HTML Standard’s bitmap serialization rule, a quality value is applied when the requested image format supports variable quality and the type is not image/png. The standard gives JPEG as an example and says that different implementations can interpret “quality” slightly differently.

Values outside the accepted range cause the browser to use its default quality behavior.

PNG, JPEG, and WebP compared

Do not compare the number 0.8 across formats or browsers as though it meant equal visual quality or equal compression. It is an input to an encoder, not a shared scale with a universal result.
Check whether the browser returned the format you requested
An unsupported requested format falls back to PNG. That can make both a format selector and a quality slider seem ineffective: the browser may be encoding PNG, for which quality has no effect. Inspect blob.type instead of assuming the requested MIME type was honored.

}, "image/webp", 0.8);This is a diagnostic pattern, not a browser test result. If actual is image/png, the requested WebP format was not returned. The bytes value records the size for that particular canvas and encoding; it does not establish a general expected size.

Make a quality control behave honestly
When PNG is selected
- Disable the quality slider or explain that it does not control PNG encoding.
- If the user needs a smaller PNG, offer a way to reduce dimensions or simplify the canvas content.
- If lossy compression is acceptable, let the user choose a supported lossy format instead.
When JPEG or WebP is selected
- Pass an in-range value from 0 to 1 as a requested quality setting.
- Label it as requested quality, not as a guaranteed percentage of fidelity or compression.
- Check the returned Blob’s MIME type and show or otherwise handle a fallback if the requested format was not honored.
- For an application-specific slider, compare outputs using the actual images and browsers your users rely on; there is no portable byte-size result implied by the setting alone.
Prefer Blob output for large images
For large canvas outputs, MDN recommends toBlob() over toDataURL(). A data URL stores the encoded image in a string and can cause performance problems or exceed URL limits. A Blob can instead be used with an object URL:

What a defensible browser measurement needs
A claim that one browser produces smaller files than another needs a controlled test record, not just a quality slider setting. At minimum, record the browser and version, operating system, canvas content and dimensions, requested MIME type, quality value, returned Blob MIME type, and Blob byte count for every run. If encoding time or visual fidelity is reported, measure those separately and describe how they were assessed.

Without those details and actual results, no cross-browser byte counts or ranking can be established. The API contract explains why PNG’s quality value is a no-op; it does not supply universal output sizes for PNG, JPEG, or WebP.
