To fix a recurring CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED blue screen in Windows 10, start with recent changes, then check drivers, disk space, Windows system files, and hardware. If Windows will not start, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and choose a recovery option only after checking its effect on your files. The stop code is 0x000000EF; it identifies a critical process failure, not the component that caused it.
What does CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED mean?
Microsoft defines CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED as bug check 0x000000EF: a critical Windows process terminated. Windows stops because that process is essential to system operation. The code alone does not identify why it stopped; the cause may require examining event logs and crash dump files. Microsoft’s bug-check documentation is primarily intended for technical troubleshooting.
An unexpected restart can involve a hardware device, its driver, or software. A stop code—and sometimes a module name—can help narrow the investigation, but neither is necessarily a complete diagnosis. Microsoft’s blue-screen troubleshooting guidance recommends using the circumstances around the crash to choose what to check next.

1. Review recent changes
Think back to when the blue screens began. Note any newly installed hardware, driver, service, application, or Windows update. If practical, disconnect recently added hardware and see whether the problem stops. For software or drivers, reverse or update one suspect change at a time rather than making several changes together. Microsoft’s guidance specifically calls out recent hardware, drivers, and services as useful leads.
2. Try Safe Mode if crashes make normal startup unreliable
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. If Windows keeps restarting during normal use, start in Safe Mode and continue troubleshooting there. From Windows, the route is Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. In the recovery menus, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select a Safe Mode option. Menu availability can differ by device and configuration. Microsoft’s Safe Mode instructions cover other ways to reach Startup Settings.
3. Check Device Manager for driver or device problems
Right-click Start and select Device Manager. Look for a device with an exclamation point, especially one related to hardware or software you recently changed. Open its properties to review the device status. If a driver update is appropriate, use the PC or component manufacturer’s supported driver. If updating does not help and the device is a plausible suspect, consider disabling or uninstalling it; make sure you understand what the device does before doing so.

Low free disk space can interfere with system functions such as swap files. Microsoft suggests keeping 10–15% of the drive free as a general guideline; the exact requirement varies with system configuration. Remove only files you no longer need or move personal files after confirming they are backed up. Then check for available updates at Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Updates may address software or driver problems, but installing one is not a guaranteed fix for this stop code.
5. Look for related events at the crash time
Open Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs, and select System. Compare critical or error events around the time of a blue screen with the crash and with one another. A repeated event tied to a device, driver, or service can help direct further checks, but a single event is not proof of the cause.
How to check Windows system files and hardware
Run System File Checker
Open Command Prompt as an administrator, then run:
sfc /scannow
Let the scan finish and follow any repair message it provides. Microsoft recommends System File Checker to scan for and restore corrupted system files. A clean result—or a repair—does not establish that system-file corruption was the only cause of the crashes.
Use the PC maker’s firmware and hardware checks
Check the computer manufacturer’s support information for firmware updates and built-in or downloadable hardware diagnostics. Follow the maker’s model-specific instructions; do not install firmware intended for a different device. If you recently added hardware, confirm it is compatible with the PC. A failing component can require manufacturer support or qualified repair rather than a Windows setting change.

Check for malware when appropriate
Microsoft’s code-specific troubleshooting recommendations include virus detection that checks the Master Boot Record. Use a trusted security tool and follow its instructions; malware scanning is one check, not evidence that malware caused the stop code.

If CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED keeps restarting the PC
Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) provides tools for a PC that cannot start normally. It may appear automatically after repeated failed starts. If Windows still opens, you can usually reach it through Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. You can also start from Windows recovery or installation media. Exact menus vary by device and Windows configuration. Microsoft describes WinRE and its options in its Windows Recovery Environment guide.
Choose a recovery option based on the problem
In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options. Options may include:
- Startup Repair: attempts to address problems preventing Windows from starting.
- System Restore: can return system settings and files to a restore point, if one is available.
- Uninstall Updates: can remove a recent update when the timing suggests it may be involved. Microsoft’s recovery guidance says this option preserves personal files.
- Startup Settings: lets you change startup behavior, including starting Windows in Safe Mode.
- Command Prompt: provides command-line access for advanced troubleshooting.
- UEFI Firmware Settings: opens firmware settings on supported devices.
Start with the option that fits the issue and is least disruptive. Back up important files before recovery whenever possible. The consequences depend on the specific action: some reset, recovery-drive, and clean-install paths can remove files, apps, or settings. Read the prompts for the selected option before confirming. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options guide explains how the choices differ.

Create installation media if you cannot reach recovery tools
If the PC will not start and you have no usable recovery drive, Microsoft says you can create Windows installation media on another working PC and use it to boot into recovery tools or reinstall Windows. The USB flash drive must be blank and at least 8 GB; creating the media erases its existing contents. Booting from the media to access recovery is not the same as reinstalling Windows, but a reinstall or other recovery choice may remove data. Follow Microsoft’s installation-media instructions and read the consequences shown for the action you choose.
When to seek deeper diagnostics or help
If basic checks do not resolve the problem, crash dumps and event logs may provide more useful evidence. Microsoft’s technical guidance recommends comparing multiple dump files for common characteristics and reviewing errors that occurred before the stop code. This is a deeper diagnostic path suited to advanced users or support personnel; an individual dump does not necessarily settle the cause.
Use the PC manufacturer’s diagnostics or contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician if hardware tests report a fault, firmware work is needed, or you cannot safely access recovery. Bring the crash times, recent-change notes, and any diagnostic results so the next person can investigate the same clues.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended standard Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Under the standard support arrangement, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on that date. Windows 10 PCs can continue to work, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. This lifecycle change is separate from diagnosing a particular CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED crash. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support-end information.
