To change Google Assistant’s language, open the Assistant language settings for the device you use: on Android, go through Google Home → Explore & Your stuff → profile picture or initial → Settings → Assistant → Languages; on iPhone or iPad, open the Google Assistant app → profile picture or initial → Assistant → Languages. For a Nest or Home speaker or display, use Assistant settings in Google Home. Available languages and labels can vary by device and region.
Change Google Assistant language on Android
- Open the Google Home app.
- At the bottom right, tap Explore & Your stuff.
- Tap your profile picture or initial at the top right.
- Tap Settings → Assistant → Languages.
- Tap the current language to change the primary language, or tap Add a language to add another.
Google says Android can use the device language plus two Assistant languages. You can speak either selected Assistant language, but you cannot mix them in one phrase. Some features are unavailable in some languages. Google also notes that Marathi, Bangla, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Urdu, Gujarati, or Kannada may require setting the preferred language as primary. See Google’s Android language instructions.
Change Google Assistant language on iPhone or iPad
- Open the Google Assistant app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial at the top right.
- Tap Assistant → Languages.
- Tap the current language to change the primary language, or tap Add a language to add another.
Google says an iPhone or iPad can use its iOS language plus two Assistant languages. Assistant responds in the language you use, but you cannot mix selected languages in one phrase. Google’s instructions also say Assistant speaks the language set in iOS, while you can select a different language in Assistant settings. If iOS has no default language, Assistant uses the device default when supported. See Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions.
Change the language on a Nest or Home speaker or display
- Open Google Home and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Open Assistant settings → Assistant → Languages.
- Select the current language to replace it, or choose Add a language if offered.
Google’s current instructions may instead show Home settings → Gemini for Home voice assistant or Google Assistant → Languages. Follow the label shown for your setup. The phone or tablet should be on the same Wi-Fi network as the speaker or display, or linked to the same account. Google’s Nest and Home language guidance says a change affects all Nest and Home devices linked to the account. The Home admin’s primary language takes precedence, and some devices do not support every language in every region. For a shared speaker, Google recommends Voice Match so it can recognize people and respond in their preferred language.

Other devices: headphones, watches, clocks, and TVs
- Headphones: Change the Assistant language in the connected phone’s settings.
- Wear OS watches: In the Wear OS app, go to Settings → Google Assistant → Settings → Preferences → Assistant language.
- Smart clocks: Use the device’s Assistant settings; the supported language list is narrower than on phones.
- TVs: Language availability depends on whether the device uses Android TV or Google TV and on its manufacturer.
These device-specific options are not interchangeable with the phone steps. Google’s language instructions for Assistant devices describe the paths and note that language support varies.

- Check the language list for your specific device type; a language available on a phone may not be available on a speaker, clock, or TV.
- Consider country and region restrictions, which can affect both language availability and Assistant features.
- On a shared Nest or Home device, check the Home admin’s primary language and whether the change applies to other devices linked to the account.
- For Android or iOS, set the language as primary if Google’s instructions say that language requires it.
A missing option may reflect device or regional availability rather than a problem with the tap sequence. Google’s supported-language guidance and Nest and Home guidance cover these differences.
