Google Maps shows a station’s most recently known fuel prices, not a guaranteed quote for what you will pay at the pump. Google’s documentation includes an update timestamp for each price, but it does not disclose a universal source pipeline or publish a measured accuracy rate. Treat the listing as a comparison aid, check its age when available, and confirm locally if a small price difference matters.
How does Google Maps know gas prices?
Google represents fuel prices as information attached to a gas-station place. Its Places API describes the values as the “last known fuel price” for each fuel type and provides an updateTime timestamp showing when that price was last updated. Google says the fuel information is updated regularly, but does not specify a single update interval or identify a universal supplier in that documentation. Google Places API: fuel options
Google’s consumer Help page says gas stations display gasoline prices in their Business Profiles on Maps and Search. For incorrect gas-price information, Google directs users to contact OPIS. That correction direction does not establish that every price comes from one source or that station owners can edit prices directly in a Business Profile. Google Business Profile Help: gas prices

It does not say that fuel prices specifically are crowdsourced, nor does it identify a fuel-price provider. It is therefore not established that Maps gets all gas prices from users, a particular app, or one named supplier. About information on Google Maps

How accurate are Google Maps gas prices?
Google’s public documentation does not give a numerical accuracy rate for Maps fuel prices. The API’s “last known” wording means a displayed price can be old, while its timestamp helps you assess recency. A recent timestamp still cannot prove that the value matched the pump at that time—or that the price has not changed since.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) reported in 2024 that Google Maps displays a note under a fuel price when it is more than 24 hours old in the Australian context it examined. This is an age warning, not a promise that every price is refreshed within 24 hours, and it should not be assumed to describe Maps in every country. The ACCC also said it could not confirm the source of fuel prices in Google Maps and Waze. ACCC, Market study into the Australian petrol industry: final report

Google’s separate transparency disclosure about Waze says users can see the price for a preferred fuel type, or the cheapest available prices if they have not selected a preference. It also says Waze does not verify third-party data and cannot guarantee its accuracy or freshness. That statement concerns Waze; it does not establish that Google Maps uses the same process. How to judge a price before driving to a station
- Look for an update time or age note. If Maps displays one, use it to judge how recently the price record was updated. Where no timestamp appears, you cannot infer freshness from the price alone.
- Compare like with like. Check that the listing is for the fuel grade you need. Google’s API supports multiple named fuel types, so a displayed price may not apply to every grade sold at the station.
- Confirm when precision matters. If the price difference would change your route or choice of station, verify it with a current local source or the station before making a detour.
- Report an incorrect listing through Google’s stated route. Google Help directs users with incorrect gas-price data to OPIS; follow the contact instructions on Google’s Help page.
What this means when comparing fuel-price apps
Price apps can rely on different kinds of information. In its 2024 Australian report, the ACCC describes services using government fuel-price-transparency data in most Australian jurisdictions and a service using manually entered, crowdsourced prices in Victoria. Those examples show why source, coverage, fuel grade, update timing, and correction process matter when comparing apps; they do not reveal Google Maps’ own universal source.
